waa a fraudulent deed, nnder the law.
The deed waa made under these
circumstances. In tbe aummer of 181)0
Henry H. Smith was financially Involved
and be called upon Samuel Kby, who waa
the flnaneler of that part of tbeoeunty.
Eby, te help him out, bought one et hla
properties and with tbe purchase money
Smith', debts, were paid. Shortly after
warda Eby called upon Smith and asked
him te make a deed te him el tbe property
In dispute. The consideration efiered waa
that Eby would Insure the Ufa of some old
man In one et tbe "Graveyard Insur
ance" companies, then In exlatenee
everywhere, for 3,000 and make
12,000 of tbe polley payable te Smltb, fGOO
te himself and f 200 te tbe family et the old
man lnaured. Smith agreed te de ee and
did make a deed te Eby. The aubjeet
aeleeted for tbe Insurance waa Jehn Miller,
of ML Jey, 75 years old, and bla life waa
lnaured for f3,000 in tbe Mlddletewn com cem
piny. Eby paid these assessments for
sime time, and when tbey became tce
heavy he ceased paying-, after learning that
tbe company was rotten. Smith did net
get any lnsuranee money wi
agued that as he waa net a oredlter or rela
tive el Jehn Miller he bad no lnsurable
Interest In Miller, and in consequence tbe
deed made waa void, the property never
paased te Eby legally and plaintiff having
purchased the property .at an orphan' court

circumstances : Mrs. Catherine Brubaker
waa tbe owner of a farm In Drumore town tewn
ahlp and abe dealt at the mill of Mr,
BlauUerrnear Chestnut Level. She be
came Indebted te him In the sum of 59 26
and abe owed him that amount en De
cember 13, 1884, when there was a settle
ment between these parties. She waa un
able te pay tbat amount and desired credit
until tbe following harveit for whatever
abe might need at the mill. Mr. Stauiler
agreed te give her credit and abe agreed te
transfer te blm all her lntereat In the
wheat then in the ground and a crap of
eita net then sewed. Towards harvest
lime Mrs. Brubaker became tired of farm,
lng en account of being annoyed by her
husband, from whom abe had been di
vorced and abe determined te dispose of
her property. She esnaulted Jehn Hllde
brand In reference te tba matter and be ad
vised her te give him a Judgment, and In
It be could issue execution. She did ae
and in tbe ezeoutlen Issued Mr. Hllde
brand claimed tbe wheat in tbe ground and
theeata crop. When tbe sheriff sold tbe
property of Mrs. Brubaker, Mr. 8 1 suffer
filed bla claim te the wheat and eata, and

tbe actual owner of the disputed oreps.
The defense waa that Mrs. Brubaker waa
Indebted te Hlldebrand for tbe amount of
money for which execution waa issued,
and that tbe contract made between M a.

Dr. A. E. Muller, of Germantown, Who waa

operation of trepanning the left frontal bone
waa performed, immediately relieving the
brain tension. Sinee tbe operation young
Augusle haa been entirely conscious and
free from the spasmodic attacks that had
been frequent before. The umbrella rib
had punctured a large hole In the ethmeid
bone, and had barely touched tbe brain.

An explosion, which did considerable
damage, although aeveral per aen a might
have been killed, occurred thla morning at
tbe atone quarry et Frederick Kngle,
where the atones ler the city are obtained,
at Gratff's Landing. ,Near the atone
eruaher la tbe engine house, a frame
building In alas about 20x35 feet
In thla besides the engine waa a
large boiler. Tbe bleetteg at tbe
quarry la done with dynamite cartridge,
whleh at tlmea free ee and cannot be used
when in tbat condition. It baa been
the custom et tbe quarrymen te place tbe
eartrldgea under the boiler and thaw them
out The cartridges are eight Inches
In length and each oentalna about five
enncee of dynamite.
Tbla morning a quarryman placed eight
of them under the boiler, where they were
for aeme time.
About half past nine Cbarlea An An
dereon, tbe engineer, waa walking
around in tbe engine house. He notleed
tbe eattridges, and thought they
were tee het Fearing that tbey might
explode, he atarted te go away from the
building. He had icareely stepped out et
tbe deer before aeme of tbe cartridges ex
ploded with terrific force. Mr. Andersen
waa thrown across tbe read, although he
waa net knocked down or in any way in
jured. Win Relet was walking toward tbe build
ing at the time and In another Instant he
would have been Inline, Cbarlea Demara
was also near but was net injured.
The building waa almost completely
ruined by the explosion. Tbe aldea and
enda were blown down and the reef off.
Large pieces of timber were broken oft a
though they were lathe. Strange teaay, the
engine and machinery were net damaged In
tbe least Tbe boiler was slightly bent, but
that is notserieu. Although the building
waa ae badly tern up the accident waa
rather fortunate, it la net likely tbat tbe
experiment of thawing eartrldgea will be
tried again at tbla quarry.
Aa seen aa the accident had occurred Mr.
Engle put a force of men te work te make
all repairs, and tbere will be but little
delay In consequence.

daya and during his slay bearded at the

liciously destroyed a fine overeoat and
pair et treusera belonging te Cenlln by
pouring en theae articles nltrle acid which
ate holes In tbem and completely mined
tbem. Melet left the hotel en Monday and
prier te his departure settled bla bill and
aa he passed out of tbe place said te Cenlln,
"I will make you pay dear ferthla"Mr. Con Cen
lln paid no attention te this remark because
he did net understand what Melet meant

found upon examining hla overcoat tbat it

plaint was made Mr. Cenlln accompanied
Constable Sldea te Harrlsburg te identify
Melet He waa located at tbe Loeblel

by the clficer from Harrlaburg te
thla city and taken before Halbacb. He
employed Wm. T. Brown te defend him
and Mr. Brown became responsible for bla
appearance at 2 o'clock thla afternoon for a

At 2 o'clock this afternoon the partlea
met at tbe alderman'a ctUee and after a
consultation between the atterneya the
hearing was continued until 6:30 o'elock.

There Is new some talk of having a pro

Tbe new association recently formed In
Philadelphia named Lancaster aa one of

meeting from here. Several gentlemen
