eta, waa placed In the amall brick building.
The light company obtained their ateam
and power from the ohemleal werka, from
which the soup faotery waa also anpplled.
The boiler house was altuated Immediately
behind, or en the north aide of the ohemleal
werka building. It waa a one-atery brlek
building in size 60-85 feet. Clese by the
boiler beuse were two ether one-story brick
building, In eaeh of wblcb tbere waa an
engine. One of tbeaabad been put In but
recently and waa new.
TWO BOILERS KXTLODK.
In the boiler heure were four very large
bellera cf CO horse power eaeh. Twe of
theae exploded almost tegelher,causlng tbe
terrible accident. Pet pie residing In tbe
northern part of tbe elty were startled by a
rumbling noise shortly after 5 o'clock. The
wlndewa In the beusea were abaken and
many persona believed tbat tbe shock had
been caused byan earthquake. There were
two roperta of the aaine kind, whieh followed
eaeh ether ae closely that they were almost
ene and tbe same. A great oleud of smoke
waa aeen at tbe chemical werka and It waa
known at onee tbat terrible accident
bad occurred. People aoen began
te gather there In large numbera
and there was great excitement. The
faet that the bellera bad exploded then be
came known. A terrlb'e scene waa then
witnessed. The explosion bad made a
frightful wreek and such a pleture of dese
latien baa seldom been aeen anywhere.
When the accident occurred, Chattel F.
Miller, a member of the company owning
tbe chemical works, waa in the engine
room, aa were Alenai Hambrlght, Frank
Abe), Jehn Keldel and Geerge Bmltb,
empleyes of the werka. Aba), Bmltb and
Kernel, were working aoeut me engine,
which waa In charge of tbe first named,
who la foreman of tbe werka. Hambrlght
la tbe night engineer, and be waa about
getting ready te go en dnty. Had
tbe accident occurred but a few
minutes later tbe llghta In tbe clly
would bave been turned en. Michael
Clann, fireman for Hambrlght, waa
In the boiler beuse. Although bnt one
man of tbe party waa killed, the escape of
the ethera waa almost miraculous. The
accident occurred ae qulekly tbat tbe men
were astounded and none of them aeemed
te knew exaetly what bad occurred. Tbe
walla and reef of tbe engine houses were
amaahed In very suddenly.. When the
men who were net very badly hurt, bad
lime te oeiieot themselves, they went te
leek after tbe ethers.

When rescued be was unoensoions, but
aoen recovered. He had been pretty badly
scalded and wan injured Internally. Ham
brlgbt's biek was badly hurt, and Mr.
Miller rceelved several ugly cuta in
tbe face. Abel waa considerably bruised
about tbe body, but bia Injuries are net
serious. Mlobael Klann, tbe fireman, waa
in tbe boiler beuse, which was blown te
pieces, and bow he escaped with bis life he
uer anyone will ever be able te tell. He waa
blown at least twenty-five feet from tbe
place where be had been Blandlng wben the
accident occurred. Miles Sberlz, an em em
peoye of the snap works, fennd Klann among
the brlcka. He bad been badly out, brulseu
and scalded. Adtlph Sehrenk, superinten
dent of the electric light works, waa In bia
bnggy between the werka and the railroad
when IheTtccldent occurred. He was struck
by a Hying brick and knocked from tbe
vehlele, and very badly bruised. Martin
Gsrnet was In side of tbe eloetrlo light werka
at the time and Lad one of bia leet badly

It. A. W. Weatentteld, of Newark, N. J.,

The wreck made by the explosion was
something apalliug and no one could e m
any Idea et tbe work of destruction without
paying a visit te the pi see. Of the boiler

done by mechanics. Tbey were blown ter
the distance of several squares from tbe
building In every direction ind the
fields around are filled with then-, Seme

of damage. Lsre pieces of timber were
earrled through tbe air ter ereat dlatanete.

One of these waa found Immediately behind
the electrle light works. Anetuer baa
paaaed through tbe eastern wall and root et
the engine heust a, crushing them down ta
though tbey had been made of paper. Tbe
ether bellera were blown te pleee and parta

Iren of one was lying near tbe demolished
building, and It bad been blown almost
straight One end had passed through the
Miffine neuse. The engine in the beuae
were badly damaged It net totally wrecked.
Tbe large fly wheel of one of them waa
broken in two and a portion et the ma
chinery was aluu a eiveied with br.'eksand
mortar. The iron flur in these boiler will
pretably we'ge. one buadred pounds each.
They must have flown through tbe air like

broken. Snmu were at least a tquue away
from tbe building.

XLKOTRIC LIGHT MACHINERY KSOAPES.
The window of the electric light com
pany 'a bnlldleg are broken out, bnt beyond
tbat their damage la net are t, Their ma
chinery I net Injured. Oaring te the acci
dent, however, they are without ateam
power, and are unable In run their ma
eblnery. It will be Impossible for them te
furnish any light te tbe city foraetne time
te oeme, and they msjsr be compelled te re

large by reason of tbla.
In addition te tbe buildings ether prop
erty waa damaged. Feneea were broken by
flying piece et Iren. Near the boiler house
atoed a bran new heavy wagon. Inte thta
a wbele lead of brlcka were auddenly lift
ed by the explosion and the great weight
broke one axle and tbe bed.
Immediately after the exoleslon part of
the weed work of tbe building took fire.
Engine Ne, 4 waa taken out from town,
and tbe flames were easily extinguished.
Jehn Kledel, tbe man who waa killed In
the aceldent, was a German 69 yeara et age.
He resided at Nr. 320 Chester street, te
whieh place bia body waa taken. Fer yeara
be waa employed In tbe aeap faotery aa a
laborer. He leaves a wife and two grown
daughters.
CAUSE OF TBE EXPLOSION UNKNOWN.
Ne one seems te knew any thing concern
ing tbe cause of the accident. The men In
charge of the boiler eay that they bed been
filled with water, and at tbe time et the
aceldent they ware waiting for a anfflelent
quantity of ateam. They cannot account
ter the accident A gentleman who baa
bad a great deal of experience In tbe con.

and found tbat tbe flues were all loose,

believed tbat It did net bave sufficient

consisting et Martin Krefder, Adam K.
But, Eugene Bauer, B. F. Haatlnga, Al
Tripple and Jacob Norbeek. They viewed
the body of Reidel and place of accident
and then adjourned until te-morrow at 9
o'clock when testimony will be beard.

THE COTTON FACTORY ACCIDENT
The last aceldent of tbla kind, as referred
te above, took place at tbe cotton mill at
Puke and Lemen streets, en Saturday
mernlng,July 13,1887. The boiler exploded,
leveling the boller house te tbe ground
and tearing out one aide of tbe mill. Tbe
boiler was burled tbrengb tbe air for 200
yarda and landed near the corner of Duke
and Jamea streets. David Hantcb, the en
gineered Faldlne Myera employee et the

mer; superintendent of tte mill, Heward H.
