The New Yerk Market.
Trem the U. 8. Tobacco Journal.
Ooteber baa net opened as coneplcueuely
as Heptember did, although the market Is
still lu a very active condition. The sales
In seed leal for the week ran up te 8.000
cases, In whleh overy kind of the new leaf
had lis share. A speclal feature was the
disposal oHOOeasoa or '80 Wlaoenaln, which
Is consldeiod new excellent stock for bind
ers. The boom In Havana leaf la as extensive
as ever. And It It should continue It would
net take very long te deplete entirely the
stock en baud. Fer some time past we
have laid our wires te get at the quantity
of Havana atercd In our bended ware
houses and we have at last succeeded.
On the lit Inst, there were In ourpublle
oteros close Ie 24.000 bates. One-third of this
stork Isaeld, whleh would reduce It te
10,000, and of this amount about L',500 bates
belong from various ressens te tbe black
list of "untialeahle." The available stock
would thorefnre amount te about 13,600
bales a quantity which may be exbauatcd
in from aix te eight weeks. Time could
hardly be remombered when tbe stock of
Havana In our market was as low as this.
Its rovelatlon will undoubtedly be a surprise-
te both the Importers and consumer.
Mere attention Is also being new paid te
tbe new Humatrs. It's necesslty, net love,
which drives our manufacturers te It. They
feci Instinctively the scarelty of wrapper
leaf. Thoaetlvo participation of Amerlcan
tmyers at the Rotterdam Inscription en
Thursduy shows their policy of providing
tliemelves for the unavoidable stringency
of the leaf market.

Frem the U. 8. Tobacre Journal.
A reduction In the surplus of f2 281,000 Is
calculated from tbe tarlU section en tobacco
In the Bonate bill. There was never a mere
fallaoteus miscalculation. A duty of 75
cents en Bumatia will net preveut the
Importation of a pound less than the trade
nceds or the quality of the Humatra will
warrant. The stubborn Ignerance which
prevails en this point among thoae who
prclend te speak for our domeatle growers,
and among thoae who permit tbemsolves te
bolDltatmced by them. Is almost exasper
atlng. If thollmeahall oemo for a decision,
we will preve te the Bonate tbe absurd
fallacy of such n calculation. Besides, a
rediiotlen of the duty te 20 cents en Havana
will Increase the Importation of this com
modity by at least 60.000 bales mere, and
will thus have tbe circet te swell lnstoadef
te reduoe our surplus.
After curefully estimating tbe total
amount el cigar leal lit for wrappers (In
cluding Bumatra) the U. H. Tobacco
Journal em Und only 15,020,000, and as
25,000,000 pounds will be noedod, thore
wilt be n sbortage of ever 0,000,000 pounds,
