Tbla gentleman la the eldest living law
yer In the cecnty, and the eldest inhabitant
of Columbia. He waa born In Harrlsbnrg,
May28tb, 1707, and received the aobeol

fifteenth year he began te earn money by

Magraw's, then a famous classical aoademy
at Nottingham, Md. When the country

Washington by tbe British, tbla young
student, new a veteran full of years and
honors, lock the drumsticks and marehed
a recruiting band around the town, and to
day he is the only eurvlver or the fenr
oempiniea that marched out et Hanlabnrg
for a three months' campaign. In 1817
Samuel Btiech entered the law office et
AmosEilmaker, eeq, father of Nathaniel
Ellmaker, of Lancaster, and being admit
ted In 1820 te the Harrlaburg bar he rapidly
bnllt op a geed practice. He seen became
greatly Interested In politic, and In 1836
waa an unsuccessful candidate for clerk el
the Pennsylvania Heuse et Representatives,
Francis R. Hhunk winning the office, in
1837 he was elee'.ed clerk of the constitu
tional convention, dofeatleg Mr. Skunk by
one vote. In 1839 he was appointed cashier
et the Columbia bank and Bridge company,
wbleh waa started with the capita left ever
from the amount subscribed for building
the Columbia bridge There wero then
but three banks la ttie ceuuty, new there

la 1878 after having served as cashier for
39 yeara he became president of the bank,

financial interests are many, and he has
served as president of the school beard,
peer director and county auditor. His title

SAMUEL EVANS,
Mr. Evans la well known, both as a poll
Helen and local historian. He was born in
the stone house en Cel. Delly's farm, en
the 20ih of January, 1823, and in 183S was
apprenticed te Israel Cooper, builder, et
Columbia, in IBM ne was elected justice
of the peso?, and In 1837 was elected clerk
of the court of quarter sessions, and eyer
and terminer. In 1861 he was again elected
justice, but when Sumter waa fired en he
Joined Cel. Fisher's oempany, and after
aervlng with it for a year received an ap
pointment en the statT el General Warren,
being assigned te cemlssary duty. He
was breveted captain during the Wilder
ness campaign. He was elected Justice et
the peace In 1803, and re-elected in '72, '77
and '84. At present he wears a beard,
though the above cut shows a elean shaven
face. He la an accurate and painstaking
historian, though writing with ease and
finish, and hist stays have often enrlehed
the columns et the Intkllioeneeii.

Mr. Zlegler thus toueblngly describes
that memorable meeting, when the gray

much unlike the Columbia of the present,

was a stranger, and pomp and grandeur

simple sport of vlllage life bore rule, and

the vigorous heart and brain et a man of

1817, en Frcnt street, and aiding a ready
memory with a facile pen, he has given te
the Society et Ancients many valuable
records at local history and tradition. He
hasbfen the agent of the Adams express
company and of the Western Union for
nearly fifty years, and for twenty. five
yeara has represonted the Penn Mu
tual Life Insurance oempany of Phila
delphia. He recently celebrated bis
golden weddlngand the Insurance company
sent a special representative bearing their
congratulations. Mr. .legler's pen has fre
quently been used In the Interests of this
newspapers and its readers ; and his con
tributions have been regarded among the
best the editors receive,

fourleen he entered business with Mr.

county. He made a tour et tbe Southern
states In 1840 and returning entered

of Philadelphia, railway and canal trans

partment et the Pennsylvania railroad. He

part owner in many ocean and lake steam

JOHN 8. (IIVEN
is an attaebii of the Philadelphia mint. He
is one of the surviving members of the
Beelety of Anelents, and at one time wai a
prominent figure In the borough and took
sn active part in its aflalrs, political and
social.
Henry N. Kehler lives, where be has
always lived, en his farm near Columbia,
and visits the town dally.

Pennsylvania railroad.
