Since the traek has been laid out and put In abape the numter et men having fast horses haa largely lnereased In the neigh borbeod, and the excitement baa been high. Thursday was the time set for the opening of tbe traek te the pub lic, and early In tbe day tbe town presented a very lively appearance. Hone Hene men and ethers came from Lltltz, Beading, Columbia, Eph rats, Lebanon and Lancas ter. This city wsa very largely represented. Aa early as one o'clock In the afternoon people began te gather en the grounds, oemlng in vehicles and en feet. A line of cabs and 'busses were run out from the town and tbe turnpike leading te the grounds reminded one of -a fair day. Hundreds et teams were driven into tbe grounds and the crowd In cluded a great many ladles. Tbe admis sion te tbe races was but 15 cents, and, altbengh this waa by far tee eheap, the management did net think it wise te start off by asking exorbitant prices. The num ber of people In attendance was estimated at bstveen 1,000 and 2.000. The only daylight robbers en tbe grounds were the boys, who sold score cards for which they bad tbe nerve te aak ten cents. Man helm has two geed bands and both marched te the grounds early In the day and dlaoenraed sweet musle beneath the abadew of a big tree. The order was ex cellent with tbe exoeptlen of one time, for a tew minute, when two young bleeds who thought they oenld fight, drew a suffi ciently large orewd of their friends around te bold them. Tbey wire prevented from fighting and all they could de was te atand and make faces at each ether as they frothed at the months and told what they could de If tbey were only loose. The managers et the grounds put a damper en their tun by tell Ing them that tbey would be arrested it they persisted In making further trouble. This bad the desired efteet, and when tbe yenngaten were Utt te themselves tbey made peace with each ether and were secn swapping tobacco and lies abent horses. The traek was kept reasonably clear all afternoon by several prominent citizens et the town who volunteered te de tbe work. Tbe arrangements ter tbe weighing et driven et heraea were net et the beat and much delay was caused by the mixing ap of oelors, but tbls can all be remedied by a . little work In the lulure. The raeea were billed te oemmenoe at 2 o'clock, and promptly at that hour Judge Kauffman Doulseb, of Lancaster; Geerge Yeutz, of Lebanon, and Miles Hollaeber, of Lltilz, took their places en the stand and rang the bell. Ha doesn't seem te knew that the country haa been under Demoeratlo rale for fenr yean, and la still prosperous, td It nlwaya will be, because the destinlea et the oeuntry are In the hands of the American people. It tbia country Is ever rained it will be ruined by the peep'.e themselves ; and It It prospers, it will be through the energy and the enterprise et the people. Hew mueb are ear Congresses and state legislatures crttlelsed and con demned at each returning eeaslen for their inactivity, tbelr dalllanea and their dis turbance of tbe extatlng state of things, and hew ran eh de people generally rejoice at each adjournment I Let tbe people blindly and Impulsively declare for free tradoer a high protective tariff at a presidential election, and then bring these measures before tbe two houses et Congress, and then It will become manifest hew tar tbey have been eettled by the reaults et the eleo elee eleo Hen. Neither the people nor the Demo Deme Demo oratlo party mean anything like free trade or a prohibitory tariff, but they de mean tariff reform, and they will ultimately realize It, tee, Decease the Interests of tbe country demand it The vilest and meat senseless subterfuge that any political party could possibly be guilty of la the unblushing presumption et forcing an Issue upon the people that dee net, and for reasons already stated, oannet exist Nearly fifty yean age and en several subsequent occasions the merchants, the bankers, the furnace ewnere and "Iren lords" turned out In long precessions, dressed np In black coats, ahtny beets and "stovepipe" hats, with badges and banners declaring tbe oeuntry In danger through the threatened domlnaney et free tnde, and that tbey, the Wblg, were lta disinterested aalvatera. Doubtless many a threadbare Democrat shrank within aa aloeye, or turned a corner te kick himself aa a wanton miner of bis oeuntry. Well, the parties were alternately triumphant, and enaeted, se far a practical, tbelr favorite measures. But, nobody aeeured "2 a day and roast beel" en account et protection, and no one waa ruined through free trade. If people wanted te avoid starvation tbey bad te work for auch wages aa tbey could get, In the same old way, for the "same old coon", and by tbe light of the same old moon. There la perhaps no question In which mere et mere human selfishness is in volved than In that of assessing a tax or a tarlfl. Every man wanta tbe very highest prlee for what he produces and sells, and at the same time desires te get at the very lowest price what be consumes of some ether man'a production, and for thla reason the question cannot become squarely a na tional one; It lalceal, and personal. Tbe tariff la no neer.r a national question new than It waa fitly yean age, and doubtless It never will be otherwise se long aa there Is no mutual conessaloa el luteresta. Tariff reform Is tbe only question that can be realized, bat that does net mesn tree trade.
