A txlrgsllonel Lancaster and letst nuntn
Vl.w II In Op:tllonen Cheats r County
Farm And Oive It a Warm twll-
tuantal for Varlousflsed Points.
It wit the Reed fortune of a represent,
live of the Intelliciesexr en Wednes
day last, July 25, te accompany a dele
gation of the beat farmers et liineaster and
Yerk counties te the bMOtltnl village el
Whllferd, Ubeeter county, eeme forty nillta
east of tbli elty.
Thepirty wis erginlsnd bytheofnesra
cf the National Hedge and Wire Fence
company, of-Yerk, !., and wa under
tholtnmedlatocaroof Dr. E. H. Nalman,
general manager, assisted by William
HehrelD, agent for Yerk county, and C.
M. Clauln, aRent for Lsneaater county.
The object et tbe company wat te show the
representative farmers of the two einnttea
above named the new method et making
hedge fcnea, as practiced by the Yeik
company.
Arrived at Whltterd, the visitors we:e
taken dlree'.ly te the firm of Eebittn A
Shoemaker, near by, where they were
shown an OJAge orange hedge and wire
fence about sixty reds in length, and net
quite four feet In height. Tbe width of the
fence from ene side te the ether was net
mere than tea I none, being slightly less at
the top than the bottom, snd covered en
tirely with a lnxurlsnt growth of green
foliage. It was se close that no kind of
took oeuld get through It, and It would
puzzle a bird te 11 ml a passage through its
branches.
Inanswerte Inquiries Mr. K)b!em told
the vlsl era that where the present hedge
ste:d there bad been ene planted In the
old-fashioned way about flftecn years age.
It was never stock tight, and bad beneme
sueh a nuisance that he was going te have
It grubbedup and replaced with a pest and
rail fence, wliea he was met by one of tbe
parties lnteres'ed in the new method and
reluctantly allowed him te try his hand en
It, the hedge-builder premising te make a
tight fence of it The straggling branches
of the old canca were all out away and the
can 68 out down until they were less than
three feet high. Op3n spaces were filled
in with new plants All tbe plants, old
and new, were bent ever te an angle of
ferty-nvct degrees, aud they were wired
tegether with two or three lines of strong
wire. This was dene only thirteen months
age, and new he has a fence se perfectly
tight that a man en aoareely path bis
walking stick through it.
THK METHOD DESORinED
Meanwhlle Mr. Clsilln was answering
numerous questions sn I giving details as
te the methed of ranking the new hedges,
whleh bn said oeuld be tnade better from
young plants tbau by taking an old hedge
like Mr. Boblaen's. Bld he : When tbe
yeurig plants are of BUlUelent slza, say an
average of an lneh or an inch and a quar
ter, we trim the oane en all side?, elean of
all branehes ; we then ronieve the earth
from the roots of the plants en both aldei ;
we then bend the plant in the root, and in in in
ollnethe stalk nt an nnjle of about 45 de
grees and secure them In this rosltlen by
fastening them firmly with wires ; we then
cut the tops oil th9 plants at the h-rigbt de
sired and thus form a solid and coin pact
fence, which will resist any attaek from
stock. It flexibility la Just I'Ufllcient le
prevent it from breaking, and its strength
la minifeld greater than a fence which
cannot jleld te an attack. Frem this com cem com
pnet frame-work, new growth will put
forth in great profusion the entire length of
tbe caniis twining through the lattice work
formed by canes and wire, and thus form a
beautiful no', work, sufUclently dense te
turn tbe smallest stock. "
Mr. Oladln explainer at oensldora bio
length the molbei et dwarfing the Osage
orange se that it nover attains a uiueh
greater size than the hedge shown ; tbe
method et plaatlu?, cu tlvatlen, planing,
pruning, cost of hedging and ether details.
As te pruning, whleh Is dene with a pe:u.
liar sort of knife inade ler the purpose, he
fld he oeuld prune sixty reds In slxiy
mnutes. As te the cost et mtklng a new
badge, tbe company finds the plants, sets
them and takes cue of them tne first year
for 25 cents per red j 25 cents the second
and third year, and 50 cents the fourth year
making $ 1.25 per red, when tbe fence la
tamed ever te the farmer In stock
proof condition. This Is ebeaper than
a beard or pest and IB 1 fence, and has
this advantage : Wlitle ttie beard and pest
and rail rence begin te dcey in four or five
years and finally ret, tbe hedge-fence,
wbteh Is easily taken cire of, becomes
better and better every year from genera
tion te generation.
A TESTIMONIAL.
Alter dining at the residence of Mr.
HamuelVHenryuwhesa farm adjoins Mr.
Koblsen'?, tbe company presented the fol
lowing testimonial :
WlIITFORD. CHESTER COUNT, )
July 25, 1S8S S
The undersigned farmers et Lancaster
snd Yerk counties, having this day exam
ined, upon Invitation of tbe National Hedge
and Wire Fence com panyef Yerk, ever 100
reds of OiJCB orange fence, GO nf Wbl3t)
were wire, en the farm et Roblsen &
Shoemaker, of Wblteblll township, are free
te deelsre that this hedge, grown aud wired
as exblbtted here, makes a handsome and
excellent guard against live stock aud
poultry either for keeping In an enoleauro
or guarding against outside assault. We
are convinced that, properly cared for, It
will be stock-proof, and we are equally
satisfied, from what we have neeu, that
crops may be planted as c'.ee te It as te any
ether fenee, and that neither Its roots nor
its shade will Intarfern with tbe cultivation
of tbe ground. It affords us pleasure te
reemmend tbls hedge as tbe neatest, most
elfaatlve and altogether the most desirable
fenee In tbe market, se far as our oxperl experl oxperl
enee and observation have extended.
