Your ' bugs " were duly received, "alive

Prtenus brevleernls, of which there are
about fifteen species in the United States,
but only about three In Lancaster county.
They are by no means a rare insect Indeed
rather common, but as they pass about
three yeara In the grub stale, the beetles
themselves are net as frequently met with
as some ether species. These are male and
female, (the female being the largest) and
the latter baa net yet deposited ber eggs.
They belong te that large family of weed
berlngbeetles better known under the family
name of Longlcernia (tens horns) Many
years age the tall "Ijembardy poplars" were
common throughout the oennty of Lancas
ter, but they eventually became enervated,
lest their follsge, and jrradually passed
away. The roots and trunks cf theso trees,
In many caws, were found te be lntoeted
by large, white, foetloM grubs, and tbeie
were subsequently Identified as the larva
