THE BEST BEEJt SHEWED.
Bergaer & Engel Brewing Ge.
THE ORIGIN OF BEER.
In a Jelly field el barley geed King Uauibilntis
slept,
Ana dreaming; et his thirsty realm the merry
monarch wept.
" In all my land c f Netlierland thcre grows no
meaa or wine,
And water I could never coax aaewn this
threat of mtne.
" New list te me, ye lieatlien geds,.ana eke, ye
Christian tee,
lieth '.erneueck ana Jupiter, and Mary, clad
In blne ;
And mighty Ther, the Thunderer, and any
olse that be,
The one who aids me lu my need his tervant I
will te."
And a9 the sinful heathen all lu the bailey
lar.
There came In dreams an angel bright, who
soft these words did say :
"Arlse, thou peer Gatubrlntu, rjr even all
around
In the barley whero thou xleepest a nectar
may be leand.
"In the barley where thou slcerxht there
hides a nectar clear,
Which men shU knew In latter limes as por
ter, ale or beer."
Theu In terms the most explicit he "put the
monarch through,"
And gave him ere the dream was out the
recipes te brew.
Up rese King Gumbrlnus and shook him In
the suu ;
"Away, ye wrotched ceatfcen gods, with you
I'm quit and dore I
YoMre left me with my BUbjccts In errer and In
thirst ;
Till In our dreadful dryness we scarce knew
which U worst."
It was the geed (Jainbrlnus unto his pilace
went,
And messengers threngh all the land unto his
lords were sent.
"Leave Odin, under pain of death'" Ills
orders were severe.
Vet touched with mildness for he tent the
reclpoterbcor.
