Tke Allentsnn l'ostefllce.
Tne president says that there is no nettl
of a hundred thousand dollar postedlco at
Allentown, where the rent new paid for
postefllce accommodation is but 41,300
and where no ether United Stales efllce
needs te be housed. The president seems
te have Reed ground for thinking that n
hundred thousand dollars will net be
profitably invested in Allentown.
The case of Lancaster is different ; the
town is larger, the United States offices te
be accommodated are mere numerous,
and the rentals new paid are greater.
The president's Allentown logic should
Induce him te sign the Lancaster bill,
and we expect him te de be. We can
consider the Allentown case and sympa
thize with the Allentown people without
danger of being thought te be affected
by a danger signal raised te our own
shallep.
In contemplating Allentown, we caze
upon the picturesque flguroe! Jlretlicr
Sewdcn, the valiant representative of n
Democratic district. lie Is a Democratic
congressman, a comparatively rare bird
in Tennsylvanla fields. He is a geed
congressman ; a rarity in every Held.
Mr. Sewdcn is earnest, independent,
honest and wlse. lie is a man nwln
congressman weitliy of the distinguished
consideration of the president ; pai
ticulaily of a Democratic president.
He does net seem te have been faveied
with any startling amount of it in litis
case. He went up last week te sce the
chief magistrate, with a bundled or
mero of ills Allentown constituents, who
acquainted the president witli its beau
ties and virtues ; and Mr. Sewdcn says
that he was told that if anything should
appear te dim the chauces of the Allen
town postefllce he would be no tilled ;
and se he was ; when the veto message
was read.
Seme malicious pcople think that the
president slew Congressman Sewden's
pet lamb because he is recalcitrant upon
the tariff question ; but we de net belleve
anything of the kind. The president
would have his hands inore than full it
be undertook te slay all the Democrats
who de net think as he does about the
tariff ; and Mr. Sewdcn is net the style of
man upon whom that sort of argument
would be effective. The fact doubtless
1 1 that the president considers the position
he takes in the AUenlewn postelllco caie
te be sound, and te be such as public sen
timent will appreve: and he may net
have been sorry te emphasize it by taking
it at the expense of u Democratic district
and congressman; whereby his independ
ence and sincerity will be displayed with
-the greatest lustre.
That is all right for the president ; but
bad for the Democratic district and con
gressman; nnd probably sympathy and
geed will for Mr. Sewdcn will persuade
two-thirds of the congressman te help
him te bis postelllco despite the veto and
Its logic. We conccde that the logic is
sound; but confound the logic that de
prives the geed poeplo of Allentown of
what they have been fondly nwa'.tlug I
"We belleve we would vote them their
postelllco.
Amendments in Order.
The general debate en the tariff is te
last several days longer and te be ilium!
natal with the speeches of the big party
guns; then the consideration of the Mills
bill Is te begin in fact, and from npiwar
ances It will be long continued. The
Democratic members liave been invited
in caucus te present any nmendments
they may desire te elfer, te the Dem
ocratic members of the ways nud
means ccmmlttce, for the consideration
and action of that committee. A
large number have been already pro
posed ; and the varlety of opinie. indi
cated shows that tiiere is going te be a
lively time when the Heuse gets te close
quarters in debating the clauses of the
bill.
We note that Mr. Helman, of Indiana,
wants the duty ou sugar reduced one
half, and that en rice and pictuius and
coal retained ; which seems te show
much wrengheadeduess. Mr. Chipman,
of Michigan, thinks se, for he preiwses te
put coal and rice en the free list, while
keeping the present duty en oed pulp
and window glass. Mr. McAdoo, of
New Jersey, wants coal en the free Hat ;
and also carpet wools, salt, goat hair,
timber, building stones nnd chemicals.
Their heads are mero level than Mr. Hoi Hei
man's ; save that we de net understand
Mr. Chlpman's argument for protected
weed pulp.
It will be a great blessing when the
useless speech-maklng business is through
and Congress gets down te business en
the tariff bill. It seems very silly te spend
se much time In vain repetition upon the
general subject of the tariff ; but it seems
Impossible te get any work out of Con
gress until a general deliverance has been
bad of the members' bellies full of politi
cal economy.
Toe Many Doctors.
The American Medical association, in
Kssien in Cincinnati, heartily applauded
and will no doubt act upon suggestions
of President Garnett, looking te the mere
careful guarding of the means of entering
the medical profession. A curious clause
In the instructions te the committee, laid
down by Garnett, is the follewing:
"That each one of said committee, or a
majority thereof, shall attend the session
of their respective legislatures, or from
time te time as their duties may require,
for the purpose of using all honorable
means looking te the redustlen of the
number of medical schools in the United
atates, and a consequent diminution in
the annual number of medical gradu
tea. Can it be that even the profession ad
mit that we have tee many doctors for
public safety, or nre they only consider
ing the evils of a division of profits among
tee many 'i It is true that the president
gOM en te insist upon an improvement in
the quality of doctors turned out by the
medical schools that may be permitted
te continue operations, but this demand
for "a diminution of annual graduates,"
stnnds by Itself without regard te quality.
It is precisely similar te the efforts of
trades' unions te control the number of
apprentices, nnd se feice up the value of
their own labor. The demand for a term
of four years' study befere the granting
of a diploma, nnd the ether suggestions,
te insure competency, are all worthy of
hearly public support. L9t us have our
doctors thoroughly trained, and thn prac
tice of medicine carefully guarded from
ignorant nnd reckless quacks; but it
every boy in the country should express
u desire and show his ability te become
n physician, we would calmly stand aside
and await the extermination of the race
without n word of pretest.
We could net find a grander climax for
our destiny than by courting the madness
of tee much wisdom in one of the neblctt
of the learned professions. Itilse the
standard, endow scholarships, found prizes
nnd then open the college doer3 and Ut
the deluge ceme.

About flve years age I suirercd fjern painful

mental and bodily depression.
I live at Ml Yerk street, Jersey City, and en
arriving home ene night I found a copy of the
Bhaker Almanac that hid been leftdurlng the
day. 1 read the article, What la the
Disease that ts Coming Upen list" it de

than 1 could If 1 had written a whole book,
lly trouble was Indeed "like a thief in the
night," for It had been stealing upon me un

I enjoyed and digested my feed, liy kldneys
Boen recovered lene and strength, and the
urinary treuble vanished. 1 was well.
