" (oenTisrotn.)
it m twenty minute, alter the Heur at
which the mines ha J been framed te explode
when the last parrel burst; but we watted
another quarter of an hour te make tura that
it was tlie bit, during all which time the
growling and rearing noises deep down con
tinued, as If tlicre was a battle of a thousand
lieus raging in the vaults and hollow under
neath. T he smoke hed been ecttled away by
the wind, and the prospect was clear. We
run below te tee te the Are and receive flve
minutes of heat Inte our chilled bodies, and
then returned te view the scene.
A 11AM.-1 IUBtNUV( tUU IHUUUMU NUV NW
saw tbe great spilt mat nsu uappenea in we
night tern in places Inte immense yawns and
gulfs by the fall of vast masses of rock out
of its sides, but what most delighted me was
the hollow sound of washing water. I lifted
my hand and listened.
"Tis the swell of the sea flowing Inte the
epcnlngf I exclaimed.
"That means," said Tassard, "that thisside
of the block is dislocated from the main."
"Yes," cried Ij "and if the powder ahead
of the bows has done its work, the heave of
the ocean HI de the rest."
We mude our way en te the forecastle ever
a deep bed of splinters of ice, lylug like
weed shavings upon the deck; and I took
netice as I walked that every glorious crystal
pendant that had before adorned the yards,
rigging and spars had been shaken off. I
had expected te see a wonderful spectacle of
havoc in the Ice where the barrels of gun
powder had been poised; but saving many
scores of tracks where nene was before, and
vat ragged gashes in the mouths of the
crevices down v. hich the barrels had been
lowered, the scene os much as heretofore.
The Frenchman stared, and exclaimed,
"What has the powder done! I see only a
Xew cracks."
"What it niaylme dene I don't knew,"
I answered; "but depend en it such heavy
charges of powder must ha ve burst te some
purpese. The dislocation will be below, and
se much tbe better, for 'tis there the ice mtut
ceme asunder if this block is te go free."
He gazed about him, and then rapping out
a string of oaths English, Italian, and
French, for he swore in all the languages be
spoke, which, he once told me, were flve he
declared that for his part be considered the
powder wasted, that we'd have dene as well
te fling a hand grenade into a fissure; that a
thousand barrels of powder would be but as
a popgun for rending the schooner's bed from
the main; and, in short, with several insult
ing leeks and a face black with rage and dis
appointment, gave me very plainly te knew
that I had net only played the feel myself,
but bad made a feel of him, and that he was
heartily sorry he had ever given himself any
tteuble te contrive the cursed mines or te as
sist me in a ridiculous project that might
have resulted in blowing the schooner te
pieces and ourselves with it.
I glanced at him with a sneer, but took no
further notice of his insolence. It was net
only that he was se contemptible In all re
spects a liar, a rogue, a thief, a poltroon,
hoary in twenty walks of vlee there was
something se unear tly about a creature that
bad been as geed ai lead for eight and forty
years that it was anposslble anything he
could say could affect me as the rancorous
tongue of another man would. I feared end
hated him, because I knew that in intent he
was already my assassin; but tbe mere in
solence of se incredible a creature could net
but find me imicrturbable.
"There Is nothing te be seen by staring!"
he cxrlalmed presently, speaking very sul
lenly. "I am hungry and freezing, and shall
go belewl" And with that be turned his back
and made off, growling in his threat as he
went
I get upon the Ice and stepped very care
fully te the starboard side, and looked down
the vast split there. The sea in consequence
of the slepe did net ceme se far, but I could
hear the w ash of the water very plain. It
was certain that the valley in which we lay
was wholly disconnected from the main ice
en this dde. I passed te the larboard quar
ter, and here tee were cracks wide and deep
enough te satisfy me that its held was weak.
It was forward of the bows, where the barrels
had been exploded, that the ice was thickest
and had the flrmcr.t grasp ; but its surface was
violently and heavily cracked by tbe ex
plosions, and I thought te myself If tbe fis
sures below are as numerous, then certainly
the swell of the sea ought te fetch the whole
mass nway. But I was new half frozen my
self and pining for trarmth. It was after I
o'clock. The wind was rlplng freshly, and
the great heavy clouds in swarms drove
6tately across the sky.
"It may blew te-night," thought I, "and If
tbe wind hangs as it is just such a sea as
may tle our business will be set running."
And IhUJ musing, I entered the ship and
went below.
CHAPTEll XXII. '
A CII-KGE COME3 OVEn TIIE TR-SCtl-iV.
Tassard was dogged and scowling. Such
was his temper that had I been a small or
weak man, or a person likely te prove sub
missive, he would have given n loose rein te
his foul tengue and may be handled me very
"roughly But my demeanor was cold and
resolved, uud net of a kind te improve his
courage I leveled a deliberate, senit-cou-temptueus
gaze at bis own fiery stare, and
puzzled him, tee, I believe, a geed deal by
i y cool resen c. He muttered while we ate,
drinking plentifully of wine and garnishing
his di mights with oaths and te spare; and
then, aftr falling silent and remaining se
for th'e sjrace of twenty minutes, during
which I lighted my plpe and sat with my
feet clcse te the furnace, listening with
eager enn te the sounds of the ice and tbe
dull co leg of the wind, he exclaimed sulk
ily: "Your scheme is a failure. Tbe schooner
is llxed. What's te be done new!"
"I don't knew that my scheme Is a fail
ure," said I "What did you suppese that
the blast would blew the ice, with the
schooner en it, into tbe ocean clear of tbe
island) If the ice is se shaken as te enable
the swell te detach it, my scheme will have
accomplished all I proposed."
"If 1" he cried, scornfully and passionately;
"if will net delh or us and sa e the treasure.
I tell you the schooner Is llxed as ilxed as
the damned in everlasting fire. Be it se'" he
cried, clenching his fbt. "But you must
meddle no merel The Beca del Dragen is
mine mine, d'ye see, new that they're all
dead and gene but me" smiting his besom
"and If ecr sbe is te float, let nature or the
devil launch her; no mere explosions, with
tbe riVj ) our failure has made her and me
run!"
His tuice sank, he looked at me In silence,
and then, with a wild grin of anger, he ex
claimed "What made J en awake me! I
was at tieace neither cold, hungry nor hope
less I What demon forced ou te bring me
te this te bring me back te this!"
"Mr Tassard," said I, coldly, "I don't ask
your pardon for my experiment, I meant
well, and te my mind it is no failure yet.
But for disturbing jour repose I de sincerely
beg your forgiveness, and solemnly premise
you, if yen will return te the state in which
I found j ou, that I will net repeat the of
fense." He eyed me from top te tee In silence,
filled aud lighted his hideous pipe, and
smoked with his back turned upon me,
Ilad there been another warm place In the
Khoencr I should have retired te it, and left
this surly and scandalous savage te the en
joyment of hU own company.
After sitting a longwhile sullenly smek
Lag In silence, he fetched bis mattress and.
some covers, lay down upon It, and fell fast
asleep. I admired and envied this display of
confidence in me, and heartily wished myself
as safe in his hands as he was in mine, Tbe
afternoon passed. I was en deck a half
dozen times, but never witnessed the least
alteration. In the ice. My spirits sank very
low.
I sat u"efera the furnace extremely dejected,
while the "".rcnchman snored en his mattress.
I could no lenjer flatter myself that the ex
plosions had mace the Impression I hed ex
pected en the Ice, and my mind was utterly
ntalesj. Hew te deliver rJ"sclf from this
hornble situation I could net iinajine.
Tbe sole ray of hope that gleamed upes nje
broke out of the belief that this Island was
going north, and that when we had come te
the height cf tbe summer la tbets seas, the
waiting cf tbe cevt tr tbs d&Kttea. ( tfct

Trr ts s out peer coniren tee; it
threatened a terrible long sjwll of waiting,
with perhaps disappointment In the end, and
months of enforced association with a wretch
with whom I should have te live In fear of
my life
When I was getting supper Tassard
awoke, quitted his mattress and 'came te hi
bench.
"Has anv thing happened while I slqtl"
said he.
"Kethlpg,1 1 answered.
"The tee shows no signs of giving I" he
asked.
"I tee none," said L
'"Well," cried he, with a sarcastic snecr,
"have you any mere ftne schemes P
"Tit your turn new," I replied. "Try
your hand. If you fall I promlse you I shall
net be disappointed."
"But j ou English sailor," said he, wag
ging his head and regarding me with e great
deal of wildness In Ids eye, "speak of your
selves at the finest seamen In the world.
Justify the marltlme reputation of your
nation by showing me bow we are te escape
with the schooner from the Ice."
"Mr. Tassard," said I, approaching him
and looking htm full In the face, "I would
advise you te sweeten your temper and
change your tone, I have borne myself very
moderately toward you, submitted te your
Insults with patience, and have dene you
some kindness. I am net afraid of you. On
the contrary, I leek upon you as twaggcr

depend upon it I don't fear you; and I take
.Ged te witness that If you de net use me
with the civility I have the'right te expect, I
will kill you 1"
My temper had given way; I meant every
word I speke, and my air and sincerity
rendered my speech very formidable, I ap
proached him by Anether stride; he started
up, as I thought, te sclze me, but in reality
te recoil, and this he did te effectually as te
tumble ever his bench, and down be fell,
striking his bald head se hard that he lay
for several minutes motionless

My temptr had givta way,
I steed ever him till he chose te sit erect,
which he presently did, rubbing his poll and
looking at me with an air of mingled be
wilderment and fear.
"This is scurvy utage te give a shipmate In
distress," said he. '"Od's life, man! I bad
thought there was some sense of humor In
you. Your hand, Mr. RedneyI feel dozed I"
I helped him te rise, and he then sat down
In a semewhat rickety manner, rubbing hit
eyes. It might have been fancy, it might
have bean the Illusion of the furnace light
combined with the veneraole appoarance hts
long hair and naked pate gave him, but mo me
'thought in these few minutes he had grown
