A rtraiiRe figure he loeVeJ, just touched
1)7 the yellow candle light, and standing out
upon the blackness like seme vision of a dis
tempered fancy, In hl lialr cap and naps,
and with his long nese and beard and little
eye shining as he rolled them here and there,
AVe made our way ever th casks, bales and
the like till tve vere right aft, and here there
w a small clear space of deck In which lay
n hitch. This be lifted by It ring, and down
through the aperture did he drop, I fellow!
ing. The lazaretto deck came se low that
we had te squat when still or mere upon our
knees. At the foremost end of this division
of the ship, se far as it was potsible for my
eyes te pierce the darkness for It nouns that
this run went clear te the fore held bulkhead,
that Is te say, under the powder room, te
wbcre the fere held began wero stewed the
Bpare sails, ropes for gear, and a great vari
ety of furniture for the equipment of a ship's
yards and masts. But immediately under
the hatch steed several small chests and
cases, painted black, stewed side by tide se
that they could net shift
Tassard ran his eye ever them, counting.
"lUclitl" cried he: "held the lantern, llr.
Redney."
I took the light from him, and, pulling the
keys from his ecket, he fell te trying them
at the lock of the first cheat. One fitted j the
belt shot Tilth a hard click, like cocking a
trigger, and he raised the lid; The chest was
full of silver meney. I picked up a ceuple
of the coins, and bringing them te the candle
perceived them te be Bpaniah pieces of J 739.
The money was tarnished, yet It reflocted a
sort of dull, metallle light The Frenchman
grasped a handful and dropped them, as
though, like a child, he loved te hear the
chink the pieces made as they foil.
lie loved te hear the chink:
The next chest he opened was filled with
Jewelry of various kinds the fruits, I dore
say, of a dozen pillages; for net only had
this plrate robbed honest traders, but a pica
roon as well, that had also plundered in her
turn another of her own kidney; se that, as
I say, this chest of jewelry might represent
the property of the passengers of ns many as
a dozen vessels. It n as as if the contents of
the shop of a jewclcr, who was at ence a gold
smith nnd n silversmith, had been emptied
into this chest Yeu could scarce name an
ornament that was net here watches, snuff
boxes, buckles, bracelets, peunce poxes, vinai
grettes, car rings, crucifixes, stars for the
hair, necklaces hut the list grows tircsome;
In siher and geld, but chleflyln geld all
shot together and lying scramble fashion, as
if they had been iotateos.
I was thunderstruck, as you will suppese,
by the sight of all this treasure, and looked
and stared like n feel as if I was In a dream.
,1 had never seen be many fine things befere,
and indulged in the most extravagant fancies
Of their worth. Here nnd there in the gUt
(tering huddle my cje lighted en an object
,t was 100, perhaps 00, ycaraald a cup
very choicely wrought, that may have been
in a family for several generations; n watch
of a curious figure, and the like. There
might have been the pickings of the cabins,
trunks, and portmanteaus et 100 opulent
men and women in this chest; and, se far as
I could judge from what lay atop, the poeplo
plundered represented set cral nationalities.
But there wcre ether chests and cases te
explere ten in all; two of these wero filled
with silver money, a third with plate, a
fourth with EnglUh, French, Spanish and
Pertuguese coins in geld; but the one ever
which Tassnrd hung longest in a transport
that held him dumb was the smallest of all,
and this was packed with geld in bars. The
stuff had the oppearanco of moldy yellow
soap, and having no sparkle nor variety
did net affect me as the jowelry had,
thengh in 'alue this chest canie near
te being worth as much as all the ethers
put together. The fixed, transported
posture of the pirate his llttle shin
ing eyes intent upon the bars, his form in the
candle light looking like a sketch of a strange,
wildly appareled man dene in phosphorus,
coupled with the loom of the Hack chests,
the sense of our desolation, the felly of our
enjoyment et the sight et the treasure In the
face of our pitiable and dismal plight, the
melancholy storming of the wind, meaning
like the rumble of thunder beard in a vault,
and abeve all the feeling et unreality inspired
- by the thought of my companion having lain
for eight-and forty ) ears as geed as dead
combined te render the sccne se startingly
impressive that it remains at this hour
painted as vh idly upon the eye et memery
as if I hed come from it flve minutes age,
"Se," cried the Frenchman, suddenly,
slamming the lid of the chest, "'tis all here I
New, then, te tbe business of considering hew
te ceme off with it"
He thruit the keys in his pecket, and we
returned te the cook room.
CHAPTER. XVIII.
U 1! TALK OVEU OCT BITUATIOV,
That night, ns afterward, Tassard occupied
the berth that henna used te sleep in befere
he was frozen. Although I had net then the
least fear that he would attempt any malig
nant tricks with me whlle we remained in
this posture, the feeling that he lay In the
berth but one next mine made me uneasy in
spite of my reasoning; and I was se nervous
as te silently sheet n great iron belt, se that
It would have been fanposslble te enter with
out beating the deer in.
In sober truth, the sight of the treasure, had
put a sort et fuver into my imagination, of
the heat and effects of which I was net com
pletely sensible until I was nlone in my cabin
and swinging in the darkness. That tbe value
of what I had seen carae te ninety or a hun
dred thousand pounds of our meney, I could
net doubt ; nnd I will net deny that my fancy
was greatly excited by thinking of it But
there was something else. Suppese we should
bae the happiness te escape with this treas
ure, then I was perfectly certain the French
man would ceme bttween me and my share
of it. This nprrehenslen threading my
heated thoughts of the geld and silver kept
me restless during the greater part of the
night, anil I also held my brains en the
stretch with de ices for sa ing ourselves and
the treasure; yet I could net satisfy my mind
that anything was te be dene unless nature
herself assisted us In freeing the schooner.
IIeweer, as it happened, the gale rearod
for a wbole week, and the cold was se fright
ful and the air se charged with spray and
hail that we wcre forced te He clese below
with the hutches en for our lives.
CnAPTEU SIX
WE TAKE A VIEW OF TUB ICC.
Fer seven days the gale raged with uncom
mon violence; it then broke, and this brought
us into the first week in August The wind
fell in the night, and I was awakened by
the silence, which you will net think strange
if you consider hew used were my ears te the
fierce seething and strong hollowing of the
blast I lay listening, believing that It had
only veered, and that it would ceme en
again In gusts nnd guns ; but the stillness con
tinued, and there were no sounds whatever
sove the noises of the ice, which breke upon
the ear like slew answers from batteries near
and distant, half wheaa cannon have been
sllcnced.
I slept again, and when I awoke it was
7.00 o'clock In the morning. Tbe French
man was snoring lustily. I went en deck
before entering the cook beuse, and had
Ilka te have been blinded by the astonishing
brilliance et the sunshine upon the ice and
snow. All the wind was gene. The air was
exquisitely frosty and sharp, fiat there wm

gave me te expect the sight of a strong swell
The sky was a clear blue, and there was no
cloud en as much of Its face as showed be
twixt tbe brews et tbe slopes.
My attention was quickly attracted by the
appearance et the starboard cliff ever agalnt
our quarter, The whole shoulder of It had
broken away, and I could just catch a view
et Uie horizon) of the sea from the deck by
stretching my figure. The tight of the ocean
showed me that the breakagd had been pro
digious, for te have come at that prospect
Were I should have had te climb te the
height of the main lower masthead. Ne
ether marked or noteworthy change did t de
tect from the deck; but en stepping te the
larboard tide te peer ever I spied a split In
the Ice that reached from the very margin of
the ravine I mean te that end of It where it
terminated In a cliff te and past the be ws of
the schooner, by at least four times her own
'length.
I returned te the cook room and wtnt about
the old business of lighting the fire and pro pre
paring the breakfast this job, by an under
standing between tbe Frenchman and me,
falling te him who was first out of bed and
in about twenty minutes Tassard arrived.
"The wind Is geno," said he.
"Yes," I replied; "it Is a bright, stlllmorn stlllmern
Ing. I have been en deck. There has been
a great fall of ice clese te."
"Does it block usP
"Ne; en the contrary, it clears the way te
the sea; the ocean Is nowvislble from the
deck. Net that it mends our case," I added.
"But there Is n great rent in the ice that puts
a fancy into my head; I'll spook of it later,
after a closer leek."
