60 long as I moved about and worked I
did net feel the cold, but If I steed or sat a
coupleof minutes! felt the nip of it In my
very marrow. Yet, fleroe as tbe cold was
bore, It im imposslble It could be compara
ble with the rigors of the part In which thlfl
schooner hed originally get locked up in tbe
ice. Ne doubt If I died en deck my body
would be frozen eiitlffaa the figure en the
rocks; but, though It was very cencelrabls
that I might perish of cold In the cabin by
ulttlng still, I was sure the temperature be bo be
lew had net the toverlty te stonily me te the
granite of the men at the table.
Still, though n greater degree of cold
cold as killing as if tbe wcrld hed fallen tun
ic did unquestionably exist in these lati
tudes, whence this ice with the Bchoener in
Its hug had floated, it was se bitterly blcnlc
in this interior that 'twas scarce Imaginable
It could be colder elsewhere; and as I roee
from the cask, shuddering te the heart with
the frosty, motionless atmosphere, my mind
naturally went te the, consideration of a tire
by which 1 might nit and toast myself.
I put a bunch of candles in my pocket
they were as hard as a parcel of morllne
spikes and took the lantern into thopassage
and inspected tbonext room. Heren as a
cethung bp by leeks, and a large black chest
steed in cleats upon the deck; seme clothes
dangled from pins in the bulkhead, and upon
a kind of tray fixed upon short legs and
serving as a shelf were a miscellaneous
bundle of beets, laced waistcoats, three
corner hats, a couple of swords, three or four
pistol, and ether objects net very readily
distinguishable by tbe candle light There
was a pert which I tried te open, but found
it se hard frozen I should 'need a handspike
te start it. There wero three cabins besides
this the last cabin, that is, the ene in the
stern, being the biggest of the let. Each had
its cot, and each also had its own special
muddle nnd litter of boxes, clothes, firearms,
swords and the like.
Indeed, by this time I was lcglnnlng te
sce hew it was. The suspicion that the
watches and Jewelry I had,dIscovered en
the bodies of the men bad excited was new
confirmed, and I was satislled that this
schooner had been a pirate or buccaneer, of
what nationality I could net yet dirine
metheught Spanlih from the costume of tbe
first figure I had encountered; nnd I was also
convinced, by the brief glance I directed at
the things In the cabin, iert!cu!nrly the wear
ing apparel, and the make, and appenrance
of the firearms, that slie must have, been In
this position for upward of fifty years.
The thought awed me greatly twenty
years befere I was born theso two men wero
sitting dead in the cabin I He en deck was
tkeepinghis blind and silent lookout; he en
the rocks, with his liands locked upon his
knees, sat sunk in blank and frozen contem
plation! Every cabin bad its pert, nnd there wero
ports in the vessel's side opposite; hut en re
flection I considered that the cabin v euld be
the warmer for their remaining closed, nnd
se I caine an ay and entered the great cabla
afrub, bent en exploring the fei ward part.
I must t:ll ou that the mainmast, pierc
ing the upper deck, came down close ugninst
the bulkhted that formed the forward wall
of the cabin, and ou approaching this parti
tion, the daylight being bread enough new
that the hatch lay open en top, I remarked a.
sliding deer en the larboard side of the mast.
I put my shoulder te it and very cosily ran
it along its grooves, nnd then found myself
in the way of a direct communication with
nil the fore, portion of the schooner. The ar
rangement indeed was se odd that I sus
pected a piratical dovice in this uncommon
method of opening out at will the whele
range of deck. The air here was as He as
in the cabins, and I had te wait a bit.
On entering I discovered a little compart
ment with racks en either hand filled with
small arms. I afterward counted 113 muskets,
blunderbusses and fusils, all of an antique
hind, whlle the sides of the vessel wcre bung
with pistols great and little, bearding pikes,
cutlasses, hangers and ether sorts of sword.
This armory was a sight te set me" walking
very cautiously, for it was net likely that
powder should be wanting in a ship thus
equipped; and where was it stewed?
Thore was another sliding deer In the for
ward partition; it steed e;t,n, and I passed
through it into what I immediately saw was
the cook house. I turned the lantern about
nnd discovered oery convenience for dress dress dress
inzfoed. The furnaces wcre of brick and
the evon was a great ene great, I mean, for
the slze of the vessel. Thore w cre pets, pens
nnd kettles in plenty, a dresser with drawers,
dlshe3 of tin and earthenware, 11 Dutch clock
In short, such au equipment of kitchen f ur ur
niture as j ou would net expect te find in the
galley of en Indiaman built te carry two or
three hundred passengers. About half a
chaldren of small coal lay heaped in a wooden
angular fence fitted te the ship's side, for the
sight of which I thanked Ged. I held the
lantern te the furnace, nnd observed a
crooked chimney rising te the deck and pass
ing through it. The mouth or head of it was
no doubt covered by the snow, for I had net
noticed any such object in the survey I had
taken of the vessel abeve. Strange, I thought,
that theso men should have frezen te death
with the material In the ship for keeping a
fire going. But then my whele discovery I
regarded as ene of these secrets of the deep,
which defy the utmost imagination and ox ex ox
pcrience of man te explain thorn. Enough
that here was a rchoeuor which had been in
terred in a sepulcher of ice, as I might ra
tionally cenclude, for near halt a century;
that tlicre wcre dead men in lier, wne looked
te have been frozen te death; that sbe was
upparently stored with miscellaneous booty;
that she was powerfully armed for a craft of
her size, and had manifestly gene crowded
with men. AU this was plain, and I say it
was enough for me.
Dofero I could make a fire the chimney
must be cleared. Among tbe furniture In the
arms room were a number of spade headed
spears the spnde 03 w ide as the length of a
man's thumb and about a feet long, mounted
en light, thin weed. Armed with ene of
theso weapons, I passed into the cabin te pro
ceed ou deck.
I speedily spied the chimney, which showed
a head of tn e feet above the deck, and made
short work of the snow that was frozen in it,
as nothing could have been fitter te cut ice
witli than the spade shaped weapon I carried.
This done, I returned te the cook room, and
with a butcher's ax that hung against the
bulkhead I knocked away ene of the beards
that confined the coal, split it into small
pieces and in n short time had kindled a geed
lire. When I w as thoroughly w arm nnd com
forted I took the lantern and went aft te the
tten ard's room and brought thence a cheese,
a ham, seme biscuit and ene of the Jars of
spirits, all of which I carried te the cook
room and placed the whele of them in the
even I was extremely hungry and thirsty,
and the warmth and cheerfulness of the fire
tet me earning for a het meal. But hew was
I te make me a bowl w itheut fresh water! I
went en deck and scratched up seme snow,
but the salt in It gave it a sickly taste, and I
w as net only certain it would spoil and make
disgusting whatecr I mixed it with or
cooked in it, but it steed as a drink te dis
order mystemach and bring ou au illness.
Be, thought I te myself, there must be
fresh water about casks enough in the
held, I ilare say; but the held was net te
be entered and explored without labor and
difficulty, and I was weary and famished,
and in no temper for hard work.
In all ships It is the custom te carry ene or
mero casks called scuttlebutts en deck, into
which fresh water is pumped for the use of
the crew, I stepped along, looking earnestly
at the several sliapui of guus, cells of rigging,
hatchways, and the like, upon which the
mew lay thick and solid, but perceived uoth ueth
ing that answered te the sliajM of a cask. At
lest I came te the w ell in the head, passed the
forecastle deck, and, en looking down, spied,
among ether thaiKW, three bulged and bulky
"" forms. I seemed by instinct te knew that
these were the scuttlebutts, and went for the
chopper, with which I roturned and get iute
this hollow, that was four or fhefcet deep.
The snow had the hardness of iron; it took
me a quart?r of an hour of se cre labor te
make suroef the character of the bulky thing
I wreufibl at, and. .tkea it werrt w be
cask. WhatevormtgntDettstontcntaltwat
net empty, but I was pretty nigh spent by
tbe time I had knocked off tbe iron bands
and beaten out staves enough te enable me te
get at the frozen body wit hln. Thore wcre
three-quarters of a cask full. It; was spark
ling clear ice, and, chipping oft a picce and
Clicking it, I found it te be very sweet fresh
water. Thus was my labor rewarded.
I cut off as much as, when dissolved, would
make a ceuple of gallons, and returned te the
cook room.
The fire burned brightly, and Its ruddy
glow was sweet as human companionship. I
put the Ice Inte a saucepan and set it upon
the fire, and then pulling the cbeose and ham
out of the even found them warm and
thawed. On smelling at the mouth of the
jar. X discovered 1U contents te be brandy.
Only about an inch deep of it was melted.
I poured this iute a pannikin and took a sup,
and a finer drop of spirits I never swallowed
in all my life; Its elegant perfume proved it
amazingly cholce and old. I fetched a lemon
and seme sugar, and speedily prepared a
Email smoking bowl of punch. The ham cut
readily; I fried a ceuple of stout rashers, and
foil te the heartiest aud most delicious repast
I ever sat down te. At any time there is
something fragrant and appetizing in the
smell of fried ham; concelve, then, the relish
that the appetlte of a starved, half frozen,
shipwrecked man would find in it I The
cbeose was extremely geed, nnd was as sound
as it it had been made a week age. Indeed,
the preservative virtues of the cold struck
tne with astonishment llorewas I making
a line meal off stores w hich, In all probability,
bad lain in this ship fifty years, and theynte
as choicely as like feed of a similar quality
ashore. Possibly seme of theso days science
may dovise a means for keeping the stores of
a ship frozen, which would be as great a
, blessing as could befall the mariner, and n
sure remedy for the scurvy; for then as much
fresh meat might be carried as salt, besides
ether articles of a perlshable kind.
