This hatch formed tbe entxance te the cabin, and thcre was no ether read te it that I could soe. If iTrantoAteusoltlrnaetilrst ecrnpe away the snow; but unhappily I had left my knife in the beat, and waa without any instrument that would nerve mstoacrape with. I thought of brooking the beer bettle that was in my pocket and scratching with a piece of the glass; but before doing this it occurred W me te search the body en the starboard slda I approached htm at if he wcre alive and murderously fierce, and I own I did net like te touch him. He resembled the figure of a giant melded in snow. In life he must bnv been six feet and a half tall. The snow had Mooted him, and though he leaned he steed as high as I, who was of a tolerable stature. The enew was en his beard and mustache and en his hair; but these features were merged an I compacted into the snow en his coat, and as his cap come low and was covered with tnew tee, he, with tbe little fragment of counte nance that remained the flesh whereof had the color and toughness of the skin of a drum that has been well beaten submitted as ter ter rible an object as mortal sight ever rested en. I say I did net like te touch him, and one reason was I feared he would tumble; and though I knew net why 1 should have dreaded this, yet the apprehension of it se worked in me that for soine tlnie it held me idly staring at him. But I could net enter the cabin without first scraping the snow from the companion deer; and the cold, after I had steed a few moments inactive, was se bitter as te set me craving for shelter, Se I put my hand upon the body, and discovered It, as I might have foreseen, frozen te the hardness of steel His coat if I may call that a coat which resem bled a rebe of snow fell te within a few inches of the deck. Steadying the body with ene hand, I heartily tweaked the coat with the ether, hoping thus te rupture the I coupon it in doing which I slipped and fell en my back, and in falling gave a cenvulsive kick, which, striking the feet of the flgure, dis lodged them from their frezen held of the deck, and down it fell with a mighty bong alongside- of me, and with a loud crackling nclse like the rending of a sheet of silk. I was net hurt, and sprang te my feet with the alacrity of fright, and looking at the body saw that it had managed by its fall much better than my hands could have compassed; for the snow shroud was cracked and crum bled, slabs of it had broken away, leaving the cloth of the coat visible; and what best pleased me was the sight of the end of a hanger, forking out from tbe skirt of the coat. . Yet te ceme at it se as te draw the blade from its scabbard required an intolerable- ex ertion of strength. The clothes en his body wcre indeed like a suit of mall. I nevcr could have lelleved that frost served cloth se. At last I managed te pull the coat clear of tbe hilt of the hanger; the blade was stuck, but after I had tugged a bit it slipped out, and I found it n geed piece of steel. The cerpse was habited in jackboots, a coat of cearse, thick cloth lined with flannel; under this a kind of bleuse or doublet of lied cloth, confined by a belt with leathern loops for pistols. His apparel gave me no clew te the ege he belonged te; it was no better, in deed, than a sort of masquerading attire as though the fashions of mera than ene coun try, and perhaps of mero than ene age, had cone- te the habiting of him. He looked a burly, immense creature, as he lay upon the deck in thosame bent nttttudeiii wlilcu he had steed at the rail; and no dreadful was his face, with a singular diabolical expression of leering malice, caused by the lids of his eyes being half closed, that having taken ene peep I bad no mind te repeat it, though I was above ten minutes wrestling with his cloak and banger before 1 had the weapon fair in my band. I walked te the companion, and fell te scraping the snow awny from it. Twos like scratching nt mortar between bricks. But I worked hard, and presently, with the point of the hnngcr, felt the crevice twixt the deer and the jamb, after w hich it was net long be fore I liad carved the deer out of its plate of lea mid snow. I tolled en, and having cleared the deer of the snow that bound it, I pried It npart with the hanger and then dragged ntit;but the snow en the deck would net let it open far, and as thcre was room for me te squceze through I did net step te scrape the obstruc tion away. A (light of step sank into the darkness of the interior, and a cold, strange smell floated up, with something of a dry carthines3 of flavor and a mingling of leather and timber. I fell back a pace te let as much of this siaell exhale as tteuld lofero 1 entured into an at mosphere that had leen hermetically bottled by the ice in that cabin since the hour when this little deer was lest closed. Superstition wasactivein me again, and, when 1 lecred into the blackness at the bottom of the batch, I felt as might a Bchoellxy en the threshold of a haunted room in w hich he is te be locked up as a punishment. I put my feet en the ladder nnd descended very slowly indeed. On reaching the bottom I remained stand ing clese against the ladder, striving te soe into what manner of place I was arrived. Thoglareof the whiteness of the decks and rocks hung upon my eyes like a kind of blindness charged with fires of sevcrnl colors, and I could net obtain the faintest glimpse of any part of this interior eutside the sphere of the httle square of hary light which lay upon the deck at the feet of the bteps. The dark ness, indeed, was se deep that I concluded this was no mero than n narrow well, formed of bulkheads, and that the cabin was bej end, and led te by a deer in the bulkhead. Te U-st this conjecture I extended my arms In a groping jiosture and stepped n pace for ward, feeling te right and left, till, having geno flve or fcix paces from the louder, my lingers touched something cold, and feeling it, I passed my hand down what I instantly knew, by the projection of the nese and the roughness of. hair en the upper lip, te be a human face. A Httle reflection might have prepared me for this, but I had net reflected, at least in this direction, nnd was therefore net pro pre pared; and the horrible thrill of that black chill contact went in nn agony through my nerves, nnd I burst into a ielcnt perspiration. I backed away with all my hair astir, and then shot up the ladder as if the devil had been liehlnd me; and when I reached the deck I trembled se ielcntly that I had te lean against the companion lest my knees should glve way. Tbe companion deer was small, and being searcomere than ajar, I was net surprised that only a t cry faint light entered by It. If the top were removed I doubted net I should be nble te get a vlew of the cabin enough te show me where the windows or pert holes w era Sel went te work with the hanger again, insensibly obtaining a little stock of courage from the tnere bran dishing of it. In half an hour I had chlpHxl end cut away the ice round the companion, nnd then found it te be ene of these old fash ioned clumsy hatch covers, formerly used in certain kinds of Dutch ships namely, a box with a shoulder shaped lid. This lid, though heaw and flttincr with a tongue, I managed te unship, en which the full square of the hatch lay open te the sky, The light gave me heart Once mero I de scended. After a few moments the bewil dering dazzle of the snow faded off my sight, anil 1 could see very distinctly, The cabin was a small room. The forward part lay in shadow, but I could distinguish the outline of the mainmast amidships of the bulkhead there. In tbe center of this cabin was a email square table, supported by Iren pins, that pierced through stanchions in such n manner that the table could at will be raised te the celling, and there left for the convenience of space. . At this table, seated upon short, quaintly wrought benches, and Immediately facing each ether, were twejnen. Therwere in comparably mere Hfolike than the frozen figures. Tbe one whose back was upon the hatchway ladder, being the man whose face I had stroked, sat upright In the posture of a person about te start up, both hands upon tbe rim of the table and his oeuntezuwco raised as if, la a sudden terror and agony of dMta.bg fisdriwtudaioektofJod. &a Uu ImiUbly expressive of life m his attitude that, though I knew htm te be a f resea body, as perished m if be had died with Adam or Neah, I was sensible of a breathless wonder In me that the affrighted start with which be seemed te be rising from the table was net continued that, in short, he did net spring te his feet with the cry that you sceaied te bear in his posture, The ether flgure lay eva: the table with his face buried In Ills arms. He wero no cover ing te his bead, which was bald, yet his hair en either tide was plentiful and lay upon his arms, and his beard Befilng up about his buried face gave bim an uncommon, shaggy appearance. The ether had en a round fur cap, with tappet for the ears. His body was muffled in a thick ash colored coat; his hair was also abundant, curling long and black down his back; his cheeks wcre smooth, manifestly through nature rather than the razor, and the ends et a small black mustache wcre twisted up te hit eyes. These were the only occupants of the cabin, which their presence rendered terribly ghastly and strange. The interior was extremely plain ; the bulk beads of a mahogany color, the decks bare, and nothing in the form of an ornament sav ing a silver crucifix hanging by a nail te the trunk of the mainmast, and a cage, with a frozen bird of gorgeous plumage, suspended te the bulkhead near the hatch. A small lantern of an old pattern dangled ever the table, and I noticed that it contained two or three inches of candle. Abaft the hatchway was a deer en the starboard side, which I opened, and found a narrow, dark jxusage. I could net plcree it with my oye beyend a few feet; but perceiving within this range the out 1 no of a little deer, I concluded that here wcre the berths in which the master and his mates slept. There was nothing te be done in the dark, and I bitterly lamented that I had left my tinder box and (lint in the beat; for then I could have lighted the candle in the lantern. "Perhaps," thought I, "ene of theso figures may have a tinder box upon him." Custom was new somewhat hardening me; moreover, I was spurred en by a mortal nnx- lety te discover if there was any kind of feed te be met with in the vessel. Be I stepped up te the flgure whose face I had touched, and felt in his pockets; but neither en him nor en the ether did I find what I wanted, though I was net n little astonished te discover in the pockets of the occupants of go small and hunible a ship as this schooner a fine geld watch, as rich as the ene I had brought away from the man en the rocks, and mere elegant in shape, a geld snuffbox Bit with diamonds, several rings of beauty and volue lying loose in the breeches pocket of the man whose face was hidden, a handful of Spanish pieces in geld, handkerchiefs of line silk, and ether articles, as if indeed these fellows had been overhauling a parcel of booty, and then carelessly returned the contents te their pockets. But what I needed was the means of ob taining a light; se, after casting about, I thought I would search the body en deck, and went te it, and te my great satisfaction discovered what 1 wanted in the first pocket I dipped my hand Inte, though I had te rip open the mouth of it away from the snow with the hanger. I returned te the cabin nnd lighted the candle, and carried the lantern into the black passage or corridor. There wcre four small doers, belonging te as many berths. I opened the first, nnd entered a compartment that studied se intolerably stale and fusty that 1 had te ceme into the passage again nnd fetch a few breaths te humor my nese te the odor. As in the cabin, however, se here 1 found this noxiousness of air was net caused by rwtrefaction.er any tainting quali ties of n.vegctable or animal kind, but by the dcaduess of the pent up air itself, as the foulness of bilge water is owing te its being imprisoned from air in the bottom et the held. I held up the lantern and looked about me. A glance or two satisfied tne that I was in a room tlint had been appropriated by the steward and Ills mates. A number of dark objects, which en inspection I found te 1 hams, w cre stewed snugly away in Imttcns under the ceiling or upper deck; a cask half full of flour steed In u corner; near it lay a large cearse sack in which was n quantity of biscuit, a piece of which I bit and found it as bard as Hint and tasteless, but net in the least degree moldy. There were four shelves running athwartships full of glass, knives and forks, dishes and se forth, seme of tbe glass very cholce and elegant, and many of the dishes and plates also very fine, fit for the greatest nobleman's table. Under the lower shelf, en the deck, lay a sack et what I believed te be black stones until, after turn ing ene or two of them about, it came upon me that they were or had been, I should say, potatoes. Net te tcase yeu'with tee many particulars under this head, let me briefly say that in this larder, or steward's room, I found among ether things several cheeses, a quantity of candles, a great carthonwnre pet full et poes, Bevcral pounds of tobacco, about thirty lemons, along with two small casks and three or four jars, manlf eetly of spirits, but of what kind I could net tell. I took a stout sharp knlfe from ene of the shelves, and pulling down ene of the hams tried te cut it, Imt I might as well have striven te sllce a piece of marble, I attempted next te cut a chocse, but this was frezen as hard as tbe bem. Tbe lemons, candles and tobacco had the same astonishing quality of stenincss, and nothing yielded te the touch but the flour. I laid bold of ene of the jars, and thought te poll tbe stepper out, but it was frezen bard in tbe hele it fitted, and I was flve minutes hammering it loose. When it was out I Inserted a steel used for the sharp ening of knives and found the contents solid ice; nor was there the faintest smell te tell me what the spirit or wine wna. Nevcr befere did plenty offer itself in re mocking a shape. It was the very Irony of abundance substantial ghestllness and a Barmocide's feast te my aching stomach. But thcre was biscuit, net imconqucrable by teeth used te the fare of a sea life, and picking up a whele ene I sat me down en the edge of a cask and fell a-munchlug. One re flection, howevcr, comforted me namely, that this petrifaction by freezing bad kept thi victuals sweet. I was sure there waa little that might net be thawed into relish relish nble and nourishing feed and drink by a geed fire, The sight of these stores took such a weight off my mind that no felon reprieved from death could feel mero dated than I. My forebodings had ceme te naught In this regard, and here for the moment my grate ful spirits wcre centeut te step.
