Ida. Wlitte purchased a first class ticket
for Epsom Downs, and we did tbs same.
Had 1 followed my own Judgment I should
have avoided the carriage In which Miss
White traveled, bat Fowler peshed m In
before him, and get In afterward, and, be
ing under his command, I did net hesi
tate. He had purchased ft number of
newspn, rs, and shortly after we started
he surprised me by opening a conversa
tion with n stronger. He speke with a
Lancashtre accent, and I should have
been deceived by his volce had he net been
Bitting by my side. The subject, of course,
was the Derby, and he appeared te be
"eager te -ebtnliT Information ns te the
merits and chances of the various run
ners, Meanwhile, Miss White, who had also
purchased every sporting paper she saw,
had taken from her pocket a racing guide,
in which the performances of the horses
were recorded. She studied this gulde
with great seriousness, and wa9 con
tinually consulting the newspapers te
ascertain hew far the opinions of the
sporting prophets agreed with the Infor
mation of the authority with which she had
provided herself. "Se," thought I, "this
young woman, whose wlwle soul seems
wrapped up In racing matters, is the same
young woman who in ceurs declared that
6he haled races and betting men." Ilo Ile Ilo
fero we wcre half an hour en our Journey
I felt perfectly at case in her presence. It
was clear that she considered herself safe,
and among strangers. The conversation
between Fowler and the gentleman be be bo
came inore nnlmatcd; ethers Joined In,
and I observed that Mi33 White's atten
tion was attracted te their utterances.
Kvery new and then she made a memo
randum in a small metallic book, and be be bo
fero we arrived at Epsom Downs she
allowed herself te be drawn Inte con
versation, and freely expressed her opin
ions upon the horses that wcre te run for
the blue ribbon of the turf. I did net
venture te nddrcss her, but Tewler had
no fear, and extracted from her the names
of the horses she believed te havs the best
chances. He slapped his thigh, and de
clared that he should back them.
We alighted at Epsom Dewn3 nnd rede
t& the race course. The great rush of the
day had net yet set in, but, although the
grand stand was scarcely n third part
tilled, thcre wens already many thcre who
had taken up a faverable position from
which te eco the principal race of the day.
Fowler improved upon his acqualtance
with Miss White, nnd I ebeyed the in in
btructlens he managed te cenvy te me
net te stick tee clese te him. I did net
lese sight of him, however, and presently
he came and said te me, In an undortenc:
"It's all right, sir; I'm making head
way. I've told her where I came from in
Lancashire, and that I am a slngle mau
witKTi goodish bit or property which has
just fallen te me through the death of my
father. I've given her my card I had
eoine printed yesterday in case they might
be wanted. We are going up stairs te
have a bit of luncheon bofero the races
commence."
Up stairs we went te the luncheon room,
where Fowler cal'ed for a bottle of dry
champagne, in which we drank geed luck
te each ether. It was only by great exer
tions that we managed, nftcr lunch, te
fcquceze ourselves into the grand stand.
The crush was terrific up the narrow
btairs, and Jliss Ida White would have
fared badly had it net been for Fewler'a
gallant attentions.
I have no intention te describe the race.
It presented nil the usual features of a
Derby, te which I paid but little heed, my
nttentlen being concentrated upon Mis?
Ida White. She was greatly excited.
There wcre seme bookmakers en the
grand stand shouting out the odds, nnd
bhe must have invested nt least a dozen
sovereigns en different horses, the odds
ngaiust which ranged from 40 te CO te 1.
The race was ever. Melten was hulled
the winner. I knew that Miss White had
net backed Melten for a shilling, and I
watched the effect the result of the race
had upon her. Her Hp3 quivered, her
eyes glared furiously about. "Ida is an
angel, U she?" thought I. "Ah! net
much of the angel there."
A stampede commenced te the lower
ground. The grand stand was half empty.
Then it wa3 that I saw n man who had
Jnst ceme up give a secret leek of Intelli
gence te Fowler, after which he strolled a
few paces nwny, and steed with his back
toward Mls3 White. Tewlcr joined him
with a negligent air, nnd very seen re
turned. "I am very sorry you lest," he said te
Miss White, "and qulte ns sorry that I
must wish you geed by."
He took her nside nnd had a brief con
versation with her, In the ceurse of which
he slipped something into her palm, upon
v hlch her Angers instantly closed. Shak
ing hands with her, he beckoned tome,
nnd we left the grand Btnnd.
f "What did you glve her?" I asked.
'"Only a card," he bald, "with an ad
dress in Londen te which she could wrlte
te me lfshe felt Inclined. I told her that
- I had never seen n lady I admired se
much, and that I hoped she would glve
me the opportunity of becoming friends
with her. In nn liouernblo way eh, qui te
in nn honerablo way," he added, with a
langh.
"And what nre yen leating her for
newf" I inquired.
"Because I knew where Mr. Eustace
Rutland is te be found," he replied. "It
will take two or three hours te get te the
place, nnd I suppose it is best te leso no
time."
"Decidedly the best," I said, "but hew
about Ida White?"
"She is safe enough. My men nre all
around her. She won't be left for an iu
btant, wherever she may go. The gentle
man I entered into conversation with in
the train was ene of my fellows. Yeu nre
a gieat lawyer, sir, but I think I could
tench you something."
"I have no doubt you could. "Where
does Eustace Rutland live?"
"In Croyden, nt some distance from the
station."
We did net reach Croyden until pnt 0
nnd it wns nearly another hour before we
arrived at the addre&s which Towler had
received.
"That ii the home, Mr, he said, point
ing te it. "It doesn't leek cry nourish
ing. It wni ene of n terrace of eight sad
looking tenements, two bteries in hdght,
and evidently occupied by pejple in a
liumble station of life.
"Before we go in, sir," said Towler, "I
must put jeu In possession of the infor
mation I have gained. Mr. Eustace Rut
land does notllve thcre" I btarted "but
Mr Fenwlck docs. The young gentleman
has thought fit te change his name; thnt
is suspicious. He has lived there the last
two weeks, having ceme probably from
seme better known locality, the where
abouts of w hlch I bhall learn by and by.
When I say he came from seme better
known locality I am net quite exact; it
will be mero correct te suy he was brought
from some better known locality. He was
very 111, scarcely able te walk, and is still
ery weak, I or. given te understand.
New, sir, what de you propeso te de? De
you wish me te go in with jeu, or will
jeu see this young gentleman alone, with
out wiwiesses?"
"Yeu are the soul of discretion, Tow Tew
ler," I said, "and of shrewdness. I must
tea the young gentleman alone, nnd with
out witnesses. Meanwhile jeu can remain
In the house, ready at my call, if I should
require yec. Keep nil strangers from the
room while I am closeted with him."
I knocked nt the deer and inquired of
the woman who opened it for Mr, Fen
wlck. She asked me what I wanted, and
w he Mr Fcnwick was.
"Mr. Fcnwick ledges here," I said. "I
am a friend of his, and I v hu te see
him."
"Hew de you knew he ledges here"'
asked the woman.
"Simply," replied Towler, "because we
happen te have received n letter from 1dm
with this address upon it. What's your
little gam;, eh, that you want te deny iUtn
49 wft . .,..;
AS Ite speke he pushM Ms way Inte the
passage, nnd I followed. The woman
looked helplessly nt us, and when Fowler
eald, with forefinger uplifted warningly,
"Take euro what you are About," she re
plied! "I don't knew what te de: lam
only following out my instructions."
"Your instructions," sold Fowler, "were
uet te prevent Mr. Fenwlck's friends from
seeing him."
"I was told te admit no one," the wo
man said.
"And pray who told you?" demanded
Fowler. "The lady?"
"Yes, sir." said the woman. "Miss
Perter.!'
"Oh, Miss Perter." exclaimed Fowler.
"A friend or ours also. Dark skinned.
Black hair. Bleck eyes. Red lips. White
hands. Rather slim. About five feet
four."
"Yes, sir," said the woman.
Fowler had given n pretty faithful
description of Miss Ida White.
"Well, then," said Fowler, whose
ready wit compelled my admiration,
"there is no occasion te announce us te
Mr. Fcnwick. Shew this gentleman the
room, and while they're chatting together
I will have a little chat with you."
"It Is ou the first fleer," sold the
woman.
"Of ceurse It Is," said Fowler, "the
first fleer front, the room with the blind
pulled down. De you think I don't
knew it? Hew Is the young gontleman?"
"Net At nil well, sir'
I heard this reply as I ascended the
stairs, in compliance with n motion of
Fowler's head. When I arrived at the
deer of the room occupied by Fcnwick,
otherwise Eustace Rutland, I did net
knock, but I turned the hnndle nnd
entered. A young gentleman who had
been lying en the sofa jumped up upon
my entrance, nnd cried:
"Who nre you? What de you want?"
I closed the deer and turned the key In
the lock.
"What de you de that for?" he ex
claimed. "Yeu will very seen knew," X replied.
"I am here for the purpese of having a
few minutes' conversation with Mr.
shall I say Ten wick?"
"It is my name."
"If I did net ceme as a friend I should
dispute it, nnd even as a friend I shall
venture te dlspute it. Your proper name
Is Eustace Rutland."
He fell back upon the sofa, white nnd
trembling.
"What de you mean? Why nre you
here?" he gasped.
"I will tell you," I said. "The tlme
for evasion and concealment Is past. Your
sister"
"Mysistcrt" Interrupted Eustace. "I
de net understand you."
"Yeu de understand me. Yeu hnve a
sister a twin sister whose name is
Mabel. She lies at the point of death, and
you have brought her te it."
He covered his face with his hands, and
I Judged intuitively that thcre sat bofero
me a young man who, weak minded nnd
easily led for evil as he might be. was net
devoid of the true instincts of affection.
"Did you knew of her condition?" I
asked.
"Ne," he replied, in A trembling voice.
Is it true? Is it true?"
"It is Unhappily true, and it may be
that It lies in your power te rescue from
the grave the Innocent young girl who
has devoted her life and happiness te you."
"My Ged! my Ged l
,j "I will net deceive you. Such happi
ness cannot ceme te pass If you are
entity." . I
"I am net gnlltyl" he cried, startiug te 1
his feet. "Ged knows I am net guilty l"
"Swear it," I exclaimed, sternly!
"By all my hopes of happiness," he ex
claimed, falling upon his knees "by my
dear Mabel's life, by my dear mether'a
life I swear that I nm luneceutl"
He was grevelling en the lloer, nnd t
assisted him te rise.
"And being net guilty," I said sol
emnly, "you were content te remain in
hiding while nnethcr man was accused et
the crime which neither he nor you com
mitted I And being net guilty, you would
have waited until he was dene te death
befere you emerged ence mero Inte the
light of day! I bcllcve you when you say
you did net knew of your sister's peril,
but j'eu knew of the peril in which Edward
Layten steed. Don't deny it. Remember,
the time et evasion has passed."
"Yes," he inurmcrcd, "I knew it."
"Why did you net ceme forward," 1
said indignantly, rushing as it by an inspi
ration of reasoning te the truth, "te affirm
that you and Ida White wcre in Provest's
restaurant, In the very room in which Ed
ward Layten and your sister entered, en
the night of March 23. Why did you net
ceme forward te affirm that it was you
who by a devilish prompting took Ed
ward Layten's ulster, unknown te him,
from the peg upon which it was hanging
and went out with your paramour te the
carriaee in which he and your sister had
arrived? Answer me. Why did you net
de this, te prevent n neble and innocent
man from being condemned for a murder
which he did net commit?
"It was no murder 1" cried Eustace.
"It wns no murder! She died by her own
handl"
"She died by her own hand 1" I echoed,
bewildered by this sudden turn In the
complexion of the case.
"Yes," said Eustace, "by her own hand.
Upen the tnble by her bedside there was
written evidence of it."
"Which j-eu removed!" I cried.
"Ne, net I, net II Of which she took
possession I"
"Speak plainly. Whom de yen mean
by she Ida White?"
"Yes."
I paused. Truth te tell, I was over
whelmed by these disclosures.
"Bear this steadfastly in mind," I snid,
presently, In a calm, judicial tone. "Yeu
are in the prcsence of a mnn who has
sworn te rescue the Innocent. Yeu are
in the prcsence of a man who has sworn
te bring the guilty te justice. Upen me
depends your fate. I can sn e or destroy
you. If by a hair's breadth of duplicity
nnd evasion you attempt te deceive me,
your destruction is certain. This is the
turning point et your life. Upen your
truthfulness rests your fate. Open your
heart te me, net as te your enemy but as
te your friend, and relate te me, without
equivocation, the true story of your life
from the tlme you commenced te plunge
into dissipation nnd disgrace."
Awed nnd consclence stricken, he told
me the story. In the ceurse of his narra
tion I was compelled frequently te prompt
and encourage him, but that, in the result,
it was truthfully told I have net a shadow
of doubt.
