Coglon's writings, which nre based upon
well authenticated traditions of Armeric
Gael, are probably tbe most truthful and re
liable. He states positively that fct Patrick
was born at Hely Tours, in Armeric Gaul, in
873. Thcre he spent his early youth until the
arrival et the fleets and armies of Niall Necal
lach in pursuit of the Reman legions, which
bad invaded Ireland and met with fgnomln fgnemln fgnomln
ens defeat, Having- disposed of the Remans,
the Celts proceeded te ravage the country.
The wise monarch Ifiall was assassinated by
M.Irish vassal en the bank of the Leire.
His naval armament returned te Ireland in
S8P. Among the spoils taken back with
them were 1X0 children for slaves, nmeng
them the boy Patrick. Thus, whlle the less
of Niall was a great ene te Ireland, she re
ceived an incstlmable blessing in this holy
personage, who was then 10 years of nge.
His father's name was Calphumlus nnd his
mother's Cencelsa, which indicates that
they were of Reman extraction. They were
both killed by tbe Irish invaders. His bap
tismal name was net Patrick, butSuccatb,
meaning valiant In war. Jfone of the his
torians have attempted te record anything
et his youthful history.
In IKS) he was sold te tbe petty prince,
Jlilche Uuanan, nnd his tbrce brother?, fa the
province of Dalaradia..jn -"".JSh of Ire
land. en4jirn-BlRuCjfe,? Thls was
tbe occasion et his name being changed te
.-'"Cetteraig, becouse he served four masters.
Milcho, observing hew careful and diligent
he was, purchased tbe shares of his thrce
brothers, and thus becarae sole proprietor et
the boy. He eentblm te feed the hogs en
BUev-nur's, and Bt Patrick himself describes
this part of his life as follews:
"My constant business was te feed the
hogs. X was frequent in prayer; the leve
and fear of Ged mero and mero inflamed my
heart; my faith was enlarged; my spirit
augmented; se that I said an hundred pray
ers by day and almost as many by night. I
arose before day te my prayers, in the snow,
in the frost, in tbe rain; nor was I affected
by slethfulncss, for then the spirit of Ged
was warm within me."
It was here that he perfected himself in the
Irish language. He completed his six years
of servitude, and then, according te tbe law
which eecma te have been in force, he was
released. He tells us he was then warned in
a dream te prepare te return te his native
land. Upen arriving tbcre he was again
seized and token into captivity, but regained
his freedom again in two months history
does net say hew. u y
Then he enjoyed two years with his rela
tives, after which he was warned through n
vision that there was work for him te de in
Ireland, and that he should return there.
. He resolved then te carry out his long
cherished wish te attempt the work of con
verting Ireland. Te fit himself for this work
he spent many years in travel and study.
Then, having been clothed with authority
from the pep"t he sailed for Ireland with
twenty eolaberers, all men of great piety
and wisdom. He landed first in Britain and
preached for several days with great suc
cess. Here he increased his following te
thirty-four and proceeded te Ireland, land
ing en the coast of "Wicklow, -nhcre he at
once began his labors. His first convert was
Slncll, a great man in that country, and he
seen added the king, queen nnd many of tbe
nobility.
His innovation was strongly opposed by
the Druldical priests, who naturally wished
te proscrve the great power they held ever
the pcople through their supposed magical
and mystifying acts. But legend Rajs that
St. Patrick's miraculous powers seen put the
magicians te shame. Tbe antagonism of tba
Druids was se bitter that, in splte et his
bone volence and gentleness, St, Patrick was
compelled te cursothelc fertile lands se that
they beceme dreary begs; te cune tbeir
rivers se that they produced no fish, nnd
their kettles se that no flre could inake them
boil, and Anally te curse the Druids them
selves se that the earth opened and swalleu ed
them up
Many ether miracles nre ascribed te St,
Patrick, prominent among vhlch was the
setting en flre, by blowing upon it, of a pile
et snowballs and chunks of ice, which he had
told his companions te gather when they
complained et the bitter cold ene morning.
All the world knows that te tit. Patrick is
ascribed tbe credit et tbe freedom of Irclind
from snakes. Colgan solemnly states that St.
Patrick accomplished the feat of banishing
the reptiles through the instrumentality of u
drum, which he beat with such fervor that
he burst the head, and that an nngel at ence
oame te the rcscue and mended It.
Tbe work of St. Patrick in Ireland will llve
as long as the island continues te held its
verdant fields and valleys. In c cry part nre
flourishing churches and grand cathedrals
organized and established by him, monu
ments te his fame in this world and gems for
his diadem in the Beautiful City, where he is
withtbe Master he se earnestly and cflicicntly
served.
In the year 401 St. Patrick journeyed tc
Reme, whero he was received with jeyby the
pepe, and confirmed In his aposte'tto of Ire
land. He returned te Irelad"in 4C3. 4Ie
lived for thirtvyjars nf ter this, mostly in
retiremenpbttheugh he did net neglect the
Oacerns of tbe church, but, through synods
,-iind ecclesiastical councils, he exercised a
general supervision. The number of churches
sold te have been established by him is TOO.
Tbcse last thirty yeirs of his eventful and
holy life were spent, for the most part, be
tween the monasteries of Saballum nnd Ar
magh. He concluded his ministry and hit
llte in the Abbey of Saul, en the 17th of
March, 493, in the 120th year of his age, as It
supposed. lie was buried at Down. The
English invaded Ulster iu 1185, and in llbfl
the remains of St Patrick, St. Columb and
St. Brigld, en the 0th of June, were, by the
pope's nuncio, transferred te e place pre
pared for them in the cathedral of Down, af
terward called St. Patrick's. It was enacted
that the anniversary of the finding of the
relics should be regularly celebrated through
out Ireland forever.
The church of Down and the saint's shrine
were profaned by Leenard, Lord Gray, lord
deputy of Ireland, in 1538. Thrce years later
he was beheaded en a scaffold en Tew tr hill.
Londen, for treason, and his ignominious cud
was looked upon by Catholics as a judgment
