district, takes it as granted that there can
be no ether way adopted than the selection

The Watchman is doubtless right about
this, but we are net satisfied that it is right
in recommending that the counties have
one vote in conference for each thousand
Democratic votes they cast, aud one-tenth
of a vote for each 100 votes above an even
thousand.
The Watchman is all right en the funda
mental idea te give a voice in conference te
each hundred of the Democratic votes of
the county; but we think that there should
be a delegate behind that voice. We knew
be geed reason why a district convention
composed of delegates elected by each
county, en tbe basis of one delegate te each
hundred Democratic votes cast at tbe last
preceding election, would net be the best
body te determine the party's decree for
Judicial, senatorial and congressional can
didates. The Watchman says the convention
would be burdensemeiy large. We de net
think se ; it would make a convention of
one hundred and fifty in the Watchman's
congressional district. If that, however,
la deemed te be tee barge, tbe representa
tion could be based en a vote of 200 or 250 ;
beyond which we would net go.

Increased anxiety among the packers, who
are pondering where te get enough fruit te
commence business. On August 10 last year
all the packing-houses were iu full operation
and employing large numbers of hands who
generally depend upon tbat class of labor.
At present but three or four of the thirty-odd
establishments in tbe city have made a start
en the small quantities tbey could get. The
packers during tbe busy season use Irem
i,000 te 3T,000 boxes dally. Only tilteen
hundred boxes arrived Monday, which were
bought by the dealers for tbe markets and
stores in tbe city, and small quantities were
sent out of town. Dealers think tbat net
mere than fifteen hundred packers will ar
