Editor or tub Intblliuehckb as en of theas wne wet and itlll are Inclined te complain of Prof, Isaehrla'a "order" te the tMehera obliging them te withheld from parents the result of their child ren'e annual examination, I read with much Interest anil some surprise the remit of your Interview with the protester. 1 confess, however, that neither liia nor your words have had the "nui DIUlDg UIOKO UUU Ull u " A ln " nm place, i pretest mat me "uniei wnnnjunniuiur ie wkuw t .... vv"i iu iuw. n ...-. ., -,. upon them. They had expected, ana naa a right te expect, from the preceuenis ei iue past, that the reports or the scholars would be communicated as they had been ler years. Se radical a change of procedure should have been announced before, long before the examination, ami net afterwards, suddenly, unexpectedly and without a cru or expla nation. Secondly, the chief reasons given for the "order," If they have any force, apply with the same force also against the monthly re ports. If the yearly reports tend te over ever stimulate ambitious cbtldreu, 1 submit that the monthly repens must de precisely the same. Common consistency demttnds Hie cnual suppression or abolition el all reports. Thirdly, the alleged "crowning out- ei dull pupils In order te ralse the average per centage of a teacher's class Is net prevented se long a the teachers are made acquainted with their scholars' percentage as they new are. Unities, the suppression ei me yeariy report will net beasetlectlve ln preventing it as would be the suppression ei me meniniy ones. Fourthly, liowever, if the teachers were te be left unacquainted with tlitir pupils' per centage what restraint or corrective In the matter of promotions would there be? The whole burden and responsibility would res; upon one msn, the superintendent, lie would have alioelute power and unlimited authority and would be unable te disprove the Inevitable aocusatleus of favoritism, prejudice, whim, unfalmO'W, Ae , that would be made by the numerous disappointed ones. He would simply be an Irresponsible auto crat The case therefore stands thus : Unless the monthly reports are also abolished, and with the yearly are kept from the knowledge of the teachers, the " proper order " falls te reach ene of Its main ends. Hut It this be done then a dangerous power and authority are given into the hands of the superintend ent, such as 1 am sure the public Is net pre pared te give, and our supeilnlencent would be the last one te w lsn. The only escape from Vhls dlleuimasppears te urn te lle In referring the whole subject te our elected representatives, the beard el di rectors. Tbey and only they sre the ones ln whose prevince it is te issue such " an order," for they are the representatives of the public, and are supposed te express that public's sentiments and will, and are directly respon sible te the public. And they, I am sure, wilt net think a parent's interest in a child's standing ln class and progress ln its studies te be nothing but "Idle curiosity"; but will recognize ln the parent's desire te hae an clllclal report rendered en the subject a nat ural and commendable feeling ; the parent's demand for such report being based en ruLda mental right ; and the rendition of the same only the plain duty of the public's servant te the public that employs biui. While, therefore, I de net doubt that 1'ref. Buebrle bad the bet intentions and purest motives in Issuing his "order," 1 still ieel that he made a serious mistake In doing it, and that the order Itself la verj far trem being "a proper order." In lc23 Andrew Snewberger, of Washing ton township, a wealthy member of the Snow Hill Society or the Seventh iMy llsptists, deeded a farm of 105 acres of land te certain (persons named as trustees for the ue of what was termed the "menastieal branch" of the society. At that time the Snow Hill Society of the Seventh Day Baptists n,n Iu two branches or divisions. Tne llr.it was com posed of these wbe lived a x-cular lite but who conformed te all tbe tenets rf the church. The ether was an exclusive order ceuip.sed of a certain few who had taken upon ibein selvts a vow of celibacy and who lived to gether in one establishment. These latter were termed tbe "Menatlcil Brauch" or "Menastlcal KsUblishment." The property deeded by Mr. Snow bcrger was apparently Intended for the u-e and sup port of these persons, and Ii as been soused by them and their successors nearly up te the present time. It la commonly kuewu as the "Nunnery," and Is located ubeut three miles from NVaynesboie. Lately, however, the " menastlcal branch " et the society has become almost extinct. There is, perhaps, only one real member of the branch new living, and that is Elizabeth Hitter, who still has a home en tbe property. The trustees of tbe secular branch of the soelely have erected a church en tbe property, whlcn is used by tbe Seventh Day Baptists. These heirs. who are scattered all ever the United States, claim that the property was deeded by Mrs. Snow larger for the use of the meuastlcal branch of the society alone. That tbe pecu liar organisatien te be benefited by it is new extinct; that tbe branch of tbe church new enjoying tbe property is net the one in tended by the trust and that, the Dur- poses ei the trust having lapsed, the property new reerta te them as helre-at-law of Andrew Snewberger under the intestate laws of Pennsylvania.
