The se-called classical education has doue
a noble sort Ice ler this ily and generation.
It Is still doing a noble service for all who
take It up in concert and fellow It con
scientiously. It Is tu be IieihhI that It may
continue fur many a year te couie its blessing-bringing
work. Hut the time has new
arrived when we can no longer recognize It
as the only education, deserting the natne
liberal, or even as In any ajcul(ar sense
having an exclusive right te that term. It
has dominated Western education for live
centuries eeiilurltM we must all admit of
great ami uniform progress toward which
this education has contributed no small
items.
Hut under the meet favorable circum

than larger. Under such circumstances

fur the latter any power for geed

luickeued Intellectual life which our re re
lermed Institutions will bring Inte our peo

ance at our higher Institutions which will
doubtless redound te the Interest of classical
studies as much as te any ether Held.
The American University, then, must net
