This morning Jsmes Smith, a shoemaker, residing In Gordonville, made a terrible aasault with a hatchet upon Jamas Miller, a pumpmaker, who Uvea In tha same village. Mrs. Sarah Davis, et Lees Corners, Michi gan, was divorced from her husband en ac count et a scandal with Dr. Andrew Emery. Tbe latter baa a wife and six adult cblldren, and after tbe scandal be went te Kansas. Last Saturday nigbt It waa reported tbat Mrs, Davis was making preparations te fol fel fol lew the doctor and a crowd of forty men sur rounded her house, broke In tbe doers snd attempted te take out Mrs. Davis and her mother, who lived with her. The two women fought desperately and Mrs. Davis used a revolver and the project was temporarily abandoned. The men broke open the woman's trunk, however, and found letters from Dr. Emery Inviting her te come te him and telling her what route te take. These letters were circu lated through the village and created great Indignation and en Sunday nigbt, when Mrs. Davis was calling at a neUhber's, a party of men took her out, stripped her te the waist and applied a coat of tar and feathers. Mrs. Davis fought with tbe desperation of despair, and in the struggle most of her clothing which bad net been removed by the men was tern off.
