church Hunday evening. The audience at
Ht. Jehn'a wa. rather email, owing no doubt
te the threatening condition of the weather.
The audience at the Duke street church
was quite large. Rev. Heward, who
la a brother of Uaneral O. u. Heward,
la a very geed speaker and advanced many
arguments In favor et the aelllemant of all
dispute aineug states and uatiena by arbitra
tion. While he acknowledged that nations
In going te war, elten bad Justice en the one

believed that there waa ' a better way " of

Kev. Heward waa an agent of tbe Christian
commission during the war between tbe

horrors of that terrible battle In glowing
words, and held all these horrors might have

Mount .km Baptist church. New Orleans,

number of persona followed tha baptismal
party te tha wharf for the purpose of witness
ing tha ceremony.
They leaned en tbe wharf railing, which
gave way nnder the great strain, and about
any persona were precipitated Inte tha river.

During the Hemlnele war Count von
Hcbaumlierg was aecend lieutenant or dra
goons, and. dealring te visit New Orleans, he

waa accepted, the claim being made that It
covered both ranks, but tbe count contended
that It waa only as second lisutenanu A

stated him, but tbe action waa subsequently
reversed by President Polk. During the late
rebellion the count waa a quartermaster In the
army, and purpeaely retained certain sums of

was a slater by trade and for fourteen years
