lated by Dalten about Gedwin's sister. In
proof of this cbarge the defense proved that
about six months age an anonymous letter
waa received by the husband or Uedwln's

duet at a watering place. A letter from Dilton
te Gedwin's father, reiiuesllug an Interview,
tiled the authorship el the anonymous letter
upon Pulton. ThoeldorGodwlugrauted the
Interview and was Informed by Dalten that
he was In possession or compromising loiters
from the formei's daughter, which he was
prepared te sell for fluu. Ge Iwlu consulted

te depositions of rellable witnesses there,
openly boasted of his criminal amours with
Mr. Polk, lie subsequently went te St.
Leuie, and there repeated tho-e stories, add
ing thereto that thu elder Gedwin had de
ceived the daughter of a dear Irteud.
A few daya before the killing Dalten re
turned te altend his sister's weddlng;, and
the sheeting occurred as above. There was
ue proof or Insanity beyond the testimony of
family physicians that defendant's meiner
had neuralgia and that he himself had norne
five years age received an Injury te the brain
through a fall from a herss Lsyinen also
testified that since the circulation or rumors
about his sister he wat moody, morose, ab-"nt-mlnded,
talked te himself and was ad ad

The murdered man's mother and aunt
testified te having heara Mrs. 1'elk discuss
with Dalten the availability or assignation
house ; that she pursued him with her atten

Other witnesses testified that she was in the

The court charged the J nry clearly as te the
law, but It availed nothing. After twenty
four hours' consultation a crdlct of net
guilty waa rendered. The true Inwardness
of the verdict lies In the fact that some et the
Jury are supposed te have been favorable te
Uedwln before they were sworn. There are
no male Dillons left te avenge the murder,
and the case will probably rest where It Is.
The killing, far from vindicating the Mister,
baa only tended te circulate among millions
what had been heretofore confined te the
few. The majority of the publle are dis
gusted with the result, but the chivalry ele

aunt, tied hand and tool, hair sullecated.

twice: "Damn you." Then ahe asked for
something te eat, and a Mrs. Sela went to
ward the pantry the veiled woman advanced
quickly toward her aud, flourishing her
knife, said In a quivering volce : " I'd Ilka te
run this through you."
Mrs. Hels, overcome with fright, fainted at
the woman' feet, and awoke only te find her
self nearly stilled, bound tightly with heavy
rer, and lying en the fleer or her darkened
parlor. Wheu her nleee secured her release
she round thst a geld ring and ever f2 had
been stolen Irem her.
Lieutenant Walten and Hpeclal Officer Le Le
nere, of the Hlxtu (Millcn district. Investigated
the case and arrested Jennie llrldge en sus
picion. A t the hearing Mra Hila identllled
the prisoner a the woman who had ontered
the room and rnsde the assault upon her.
.She said thst two weeks age she had quart el
ed with the girl about a tire In one of the
boarder's rooms anil had ordered her out of
the parlor. Hlucu thou they had been en
unfriendly terms.
The servant girl employed by Mrs. llrldge
testified thtt Jennie had net lult her prusence
ler five minutes during the morning, but It
was afterward shown that the girl had been
out or the heuse about lu o'clock. Lleutenant
Walten Mated that Mis llrldge was arrested

the opening or Wednesday morning session,

being present. Voluminous points en both
sides were presented te the court, these or
the cellege belng three tlme as numerous a
theso or Mr. Hill. The latter asked the court
te advise the Jury that the alleged trUl by
the faculty of Jehn M. 11111 was Illegal and
oppressive, and that n uxngu of twenty J eats,
even if proved, could net legallzs It.
The college lawyers asked instructions te
the Jury that if the faculty acted In geed faith
their decision could net be reviewed ; that
Hill's deuiaudiug and receiving steui the
college treasurer a proertlonsU urt of bis
term bill afler he bad been dismissed should
go te prove that he bad no right te restoration ;
that he was also deprived el that right because
he bad net demanded te be reinstated belere
bringing hla action. The court dl roc ted the
Jury that the trial as described by Dr.
McCauIeyand the profeiwers wa Irregular
and notcrnseiiaut vtlth the law of 1'ennayl
vAis, and a conviction under It was void;
that a usaxe, however hoary, net known te
and accepted by Mr. Hill when he entered
the college, oeuld net legalize It, and that Mr.
Hill had Kiifll:luutly demanded reinstatement
te entitle him te a verdict- It closed by
directing the Jury, a there were no disputed
facts, te dud a verdict for the relater, subject
te a point of law reserved whether his asking
for and receiving the part et hlsterm fue was
h voluntary buvuraime et his coiiiactlen with
the college.
The charge, which was very ole ir, prealse
and Hble, was delivered with great dignity
aud has elicited many oncemtuuis, The
town la elated ever the result and ha largely
sympathizsd with Mr. Hill, though naturally
the faculty, te), are net without supporter.
It is understood Hill, sallsrled with his vin
dicatien, will make no attempt te be put Inte
the college by tue peremptory inaudauni.

The condition of Christian stroet, between
Orange aud Chestnut, Is fearlul at present.
The mud Is almost knoe deep at many places

ferent occasions, but they pay no attention te

visited the prison this morning te take a
leek at the prisoners- He says Heenan and
Leenard are net the men who cheated blm.

Lancaster has lets of musle new. On Monday
night there were four separate and dlstlnet

eaeh ether. The band of Walte's Comedy
company gives a oenoert In Centre Square
each morning and at the opera house In the
evening. The West King street theatre band

exeltlng events were relieved by the humor

Jamea R. Walte; and Mines Marguerite
Hchuyler aud Ueergle Mrlar were masters of
their parts. The two first finally appeared
befere the curtain after the flrst act and a
vigorous encore.

The King Street Theatre.
The attendance was large at the Klngstreet
theatre last evening. There was a consider
able chsnge In the pregramme. The show
opened with n regular minstrel part which
Included len people, inale and femate, be
sides the orchestra. The end men were
Messra. Wenr-.il, Gelden, MoElrey and
Ueldle, allot whom sing tunny songs and
told stories. Themas K. Carter, Jee Beyer,
the Gllmercs and Miss Andersen tank bal
lads, The second part had also undergone
some change and ihoGllmere appeared but
once Instead et twice. Carter and Andersen
a new sketch entitled ''The Old Farm
Gate" In which Mr. Carter played a
Dutch part, The show ran well, but the
orchestra need Improving. This will be
remedied in a few day.

nedy had bis first criminal hearing en Wed
nesday afternoon. The defendant were Sam
uel Mull, living near Terra 11111, and Albert
Garman, residing near Bed Bun, East Co Ce
calico township. N. Franklin Hall and Wm.
D. Weaver appeared na counsel for Mull and
Jehn It. Fry for Garman. The testimony
was that Garman some months age stele
from Itreneman' cigar manufactory 400 or
UK) unstamped cigar. These cigars were
left at Mull's heuse by Garman, In payment
of rent he owed him, In the absence or Mull.
Wheu Mull returned home his wire told him
about the cigars. He did net think he
had a right te keep them, and a month after
ward he met Squire Mull, a relative, and
told him about the matter. The (quire
advised him toluferm the revenue authorities,
and it was claimed that be notified Mr. Simp Simp
eon In charge of that district the first time
hesawhlm. Simpsen then went te Mull's
house and was given the cigars, Garman did
