A curious romance has Just bscn revealcd
In Waupaca, Wla., in connection with the
life history of Mrs. Charles Smith, of that
place, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thornten, el
Mlddlotewn, N. Y., had but ene small child,
a glrL Mr. Thornten aud bis wlfe bad a bit
ter quanel with a brother of the former ever
some cotton mill property belonging te their
father's estate. The brother, lu his anger,
threatened te get even.
The child, Adelia Thornten, was in the
habit of piylng frequeut visits te a neighbor
living near by, and when returning home
from this neighbor's ene evening the was
abducted. Search was made for months, but
uet the slightest clue te her disappearance
was discovered.
Soeu after the data en which the child was
stolen, a woman brought a little girl te Mrs.
Samuel Combs, then living in Michigan, and
asked her te take care et her, aud Mrs.
Combs consented, borne time after the
woman's prelesscd husband came te the
house and requested Mrs. Combs te perman
ently take care et thechild, as his wire was
dead aud be would make It right. This was
the last heard of the couple The child grew
up as the adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Combs and was married.
Snine months age Mr. and Mrs. C. Morgan,
ofMiddlevllle, came te Waupjr-i, They be
came arquaimed with Mrs Smith and at
once rrceiMilred a resemblance te the Thorn
tons. This was the means of epenimr un a
correspondence butween the latter and Mr
Smith, which resulted iu establishing her
identity as the abducted and long lest Adelia.
Mr. Thornten was te contluced of the
Identity that he recently sent a check te Mrs.
Smith te pay her expenses East, aud Bhe left
for Mlddleville.
