Jehn W. Jacksen wai born In Marylaud,
and was brought te I.iucajtter by hla moth or
wheu be waa a mere child. When only
aetn jearseld he was put te work In the
" old factory" at the feet of Hookland street.
A few jears later he waa ompleyod as erraud
buy In the dry goods store of Mr. Hoflmeler,
en North Queen street, where It .. Hlirolu Hlirelu

advanced te a clerkship and romained with
Mr. Hoffmelor until about 1410, when he be
came a salesman In the comb aud vailety
store of Jehn Htialluer, then carried ou In
the building new occupied as a jewelry store
by B. Z. Hhrelner.
Here he remained until lSIi, when he and
the lain Mlohael Zilim bought out Mr. Shall".

On quilting the Inland, Mr. Jacksen re
tired te private life. Seven or eight years
age he wasstrlckeu with paralysis, and had
at Internals aeveral ether strokes, which
lamed him aud nlleeted his speech. lu
March, 1385, In descending the stair from
his bed room, he foil nud breke the thigh
Imuoef his paralyzed leg, and alter suUtring
greatly died en the Hth of May, 183S.
Mr. Jaoksen was an nctlve politician of the
nUl Domceratlo school and from ISIS te 1W0
the llttle room In rear of Zitim .t Jacksen's
store was the meeting placu whero Jacksen
aud a dozen or mero of othera discussed mat
tern of state. They wcre nutMlucbanau
Democrats and when Mr. Hucbauau was
nominated for the presidency in 1864 nearly
all thorn left the parly and voted for I're
ment , but Mr. Jaoksen remained true te his
1 principles and supported the Domecratlo
ticket.
In 1657 Mr. Jacksen was elocted city tress,
n -fraud served acceptably for one or two
yeara.
When the Houtheru stutea seceded and the
civil war follewod, Mr. Jacksen gave support
te Mr. Lincoln's government, aud though
net regarded as a strong party man generally
eted the Republican ticket.
Mr. Jaoksen lived and died a bachelor. He
was a man of genoreua Impulses and was re
garded us a very pleasant companion In the
clrele In which he moved. Notwithstanding
the few educational advanlagea he had In bja
boyhood he was a well-informed and fairly
educa'.ed man, and took a warm Interest In
the public- schools and ether educational in in
sjltutlens. Ills religion was of a liberal and
uusoelarlan character, and It waa net nntll a
short tlme bofero hla death that he counected
himself with the Meiavlan church.
It may be noticed as a curious clroumstance
that Mr. JackBen'a death occurred In the
aame building which for mero than half a
century he had oeoupled as errand-boy, olerk
and merchant : that ter forty yeara he oc
cupied the bed-room In which be died; and
for an equal length el time he beard ed at the
Grape hotel and always occupied the same
seat in the dining room.

Gas per thousand feet for the Mayer's omce.
Treasurer's Offlce, Council chambers. Market
Houses and Station Heuse, and alto ler Street
Lamps, at a axed price per lamp, with a flvo-leot
burner, for a period of one year from and ensu
ing J une 1837. The company furnishing the gas
shall light all the street gas lamps every night
throughout tbe ear at sunset, and shall keep
tbe same clean aud la repair, cleaning them nt

line or ether lighting material, snail light all the

must burn until sunrise, and the contractor
