iThe number of men hi Congress who are
net te te bribed by touching eitherthelrava eitherthelrava
rice or ambition Is nofse great but that w hen
occasiea nftenls seme effort should le made
te lncrease it by showing that the people de
net undervalue this quality in their
public servants. Wealthy and jnier con
gressmen arebeta open te the temptations
of ambltleii,mid when.by consistent record,
they have shown that their work has been
ene of unselfish patriotism, the nation
should express Its appreciation by crown
ing their memory with all the honors that
are the due of great men. Ter after all
geed men nre mere rare than great men
and should easily win as gifts the houers
that the abler men seize by ferce.
Many prominent members of Congress
live unostentatiously and s'ew an absolute
disregard for wealth, bome are strictly
conscientious and cannot be influenced by
touching their ambition ; and taken as a
w hole, the heuesty of our senators and
representatives may be said te stand ou a
par with the average honesty of men in
business. They are our representatives
and our national Integrity will be estimated
by foreigners by reference te Congress as
the standard.

progress of the Seuth during the part year,

Kentucky shows the largest amount of capi

during the year, $23,401,000 ; an increase of
mere than ten millions erer ISii. Tennessee
comes next nun $21,210,000, an increase of
nearly nineteen millions. Alabama is only
third, in spite of all the noise ever her iron
and coal, $1!,S15,000 ; twelve millions tnore
than the amount invested in lssj. Arkansas
has added ever ilfteen millions te her capital
for industrial development.
The iron interests have attracted wide at
tention from the colossal proportions of the
enterpri6i4 that have started te develep this
field. The Tenneee Ceal Iren and Rail Rail

has nve great furnaces in operation and is
building ttve mere, besides coke evens and
opening new eesl mines. Other companies
are net far behind this giant, and Iren and
steel works are belnc rapidly built; -whlle
factories of all kinds have been started all
ever the Seuth. The wide diversity of the
new enterprises is taken as the most gratify
ing feature of the industrial devtlopement.
The Chattanooga 1'raitesman gees lute
an equally thorough investigation of the

product of pig iron in six years te have been

rate of gain of capacity in Alabimi, Tenues
