The Liquor Warfare caaeei a railing off In the
Iteceipts
The revenue of the state of Pennsylvania
for the pist year aggregated $7,,'.:e,T11.13, as
against ?.17S,:U 2S the previous year. The
expenditures amounted te J7,W5,5.42
thnwing a decresse of Sl.W.Kill. This
large reduction In payments was due mainly
te the fact that tbe legislature was net In ses
sion this year. The falling off in the rev
euties of the state was largely due te the suc
cessful warfare made against the Issuing of
liquor aud restaurant licenses in manv por
tions et Pennsylvania. Last year J631.0CO
was derived fre'm liquor license, and this
vear the amount has droop d te ft 11,00ft
There Is also a decrease of Jsl 000 In the eat
ing house license tax. The collateral Inher
itance tax of five per cent, realizes! J000,
which is a little mere man tne annual aver
age Tne tax en the capital stock f corporations
resehed SljT.K'.OOO, and the gresa receipts tax
H210.000. Owing te the improvement of the
business of corporations they paid nearly
$300,000 mere tax en gross receipts than the
previous year. The banks contributed 5115,
000, te tbe revenue of tbe state, personal prop prep prop
ertv, fCeCOOO. and fertlur iLsurance com cem
paLi'S 031,010. The various licenses. Includ
ing liquor, netted a revenue of about 939,000.
During Governer Paulsen's administra
tion of four years mere charters te corpora
tions were Issued than during tbe previous
decade, and the bonuses en charters have
consequently largely increased. The addi
tional revenues from this source the past
year aggiegated about 510,000.
The conultutlen et the state requires that
the public debt shall be reduced at least J2y
000 annually, but the large tax collections
enabled a reduction of ever f 700,000 the
past year.
