A petition Is belng circulated among the
merchants el Columbia by Albert Ilartiuan,
Fred. Duttcnhofer and Frank Findley, em
ployed as clerks, by which the merchants
agree te clesn tbelr places of bualness every
evening at 8 o'clock except Saturdays, and
every month of the year but December.
Twenty-nine merchants have beeu visited by
the committee and signature! have been ob
tained from hut one. If the movement is
successful it will de away with an attempt te
have an early 0 o'clock closing during the
summer months.

Rev. William P. Evan, pastor of the
Kccend street Lutheran churcb, w ill deliver a
forles of Sunday evening lectures during the
month of December, en Success In Life. A

ber of the leading citizens of Columbia, and
the lectures will embrace their views and
opinions of these citizens. The subject for

On Friday evening a large theatrical com
pany, with Adele iielgarde at its head, and
under the management of Themas 11. Me
Dorjeugb, was te have played Siberia " in
the Yerk opera hnnse. Quite a large audi
ence was present and the orchestra played
ji' r isutl prelude. Eight o'clock came but
tbe curtain did net rise and tbe audience was
dismissed alter receiving their money. In
vestigation etiewed that difficulty had ari'eu.
between tbe manager of the company and
the directors of the opera house, and the
former retused te allow hi company te ap
pear. Frem all that can be learned el the
affair Mr. MeDoneugh was right In the mat
ter and deserves credit for net allowing him
self te be beaten. The Yerk opera house is
owned by a corporation, which is chartered
under tbe lava of tbe state. The stock
holders annually elect nine director! te

tbe finances. Although R. C. Teetz la sup
posed te be really the manager of the home
