A lecture will be delivered in tlie eera
house this evening, under the auspices or
the Columbia Assembly of tbe Knights of
Laber, by Rev. T. 11. Amies, of Heading.
The lecture will t en the subject of "The
Bights of the Common People." Kev. Amies
lsan able lecturer upon tlie important ques
tions of labor.
Town Nete..
The Kescue Fire company, of Yerk, ac
companied by the Werth Infantry band, ar
rived In town this morning, en route for
Heading, where they will participate in a
firemen's parade. The company aud band
occupied two special cars, and presented a
fine appearance.
Fer some weeks past tlie residents of Lo
cust street, above Fourth, have been an
noyed by opossums entering their chicken
coops during the night and Killing their
chickens. Last night Rebert Hall heard a
noise in bis coop, and upon Investigation
ieund a large opossum In ine place. An air
gun was procured and tbe Intruder killed.
It was a very large specimen of lis kind,
weighing eight pounds.
On next Monday evening, " Arizona Jee "
the Western scout, will appear In ttie iiera
house In the border drama of "The Black
Hawks."
Arber Day was net celebrated in any
general manner in Columbia. Tbe school
did net plant any trees.
Mr. P. 8. Brugb left town yesterday for
Gettysburg, called there by the serious ill
ness of his father.
Officer Wlttlck arreated a man yesterday
who was carrying a number of women's knit
wraps, en suspicion that he bad stolen thetn.
The wraps were examined butnetblng could
be found upon them te Indicate they had
been stolen. Tbe man was then released.
A small car used at Clepper's sand wharf
te haul sand from the river te the bins, ran
off the end of tbe track this morning, falling
te the river track. It was broken.
Seven stray geese came te the yard of
Andrew Elsenberger, living en Seuth Frent

far this week, and last evening the audience

play was tbe favorite In her repertoire upon

the support has been braced by several new
members, and the verdict of all pronounced

tien of extreme remorse brought out the

This evening "The Te Orphans" will no
doubt be as well presented, for iu such

A Lancaster yuuth named Kunkie and a
Yerk county damsel named Gable wishing
te have the marriage kuet tied about them,
the prospective groom secured a marriage
license from the Lancaster county court, and
together the two went te VrightsIlle, this
county, yesterday, and aked Kev. Uee. Bell,
the Presbyterian minister of th.it place, te
perferin the ceremony. They w ere Informed
that It was Im possible te be married In this
county en a Lancaster county licetise. The
bride net wishing te go any farther te hae It
done, the jrty proceeded te the west end of
the Columbia bridge, Just outside the Yerk
county line, and there the two were made
happy.

Important Tobacco Cats Settled,
The case of E. Bacb'A; Sen, of New Yerk,
agalust Charles A. Keece, of this city, for
fraud in certain tobacco transactions, which
had been postponed from tlme te time, and
was set down for trial at the present court of
quarter aosBlens. was privately settled ves-
terday by the parties Interested. Frem au

that the basis el settlement was tbe
payment by Mr. Iteece of f3,200 fe Bach
Sen, and all tbe costs except f50, which were
te be paid by Bach A Sen. Mr. Keece was
afterwards seen, and he at first declined te
give auy Information regarding the terms or
Mtlleinent, as he was bound te secrecy ; but
when be was told of the terms el settlement,
as above reported, he at once said that they
were untrue ; that be had net paid one cent

Charged With Larceny.
Bome time age It was netlcedln the Intei
LtriKNCKR that tbe broker ciltlce of S. K.
Yundt, en East King street, bad frequently
been visited by sneak thieves. They last
went there en Saturday evening when a set
of checker, beard and book of games were
stolen. The case was git en te officers
IUrnbeld and Weaver who ou Thursday
arrested Jehn Kreider, a boy who is well
known In town for the rftensn. Kreider,
denied all kuowledge of Ih missing goedr,
but afterwards admitted thai he gave them te
another boy named Benjamin Benedict.
The latter was also arrested and the book was
Ieund at his place el employment. Ihe
checkers and beard were recovered at his
home en Church street. Benedict admitted
that he bad been In Mr. Y u ml t'a office before
and last winter went and took some elder.
The accused were held before Alderman
Kerdney for a hearlng. Benedict gave ball,
but Kreider was committed.
