Continental Hetel, Philadelphia.
We are pleased te knew that brother
.Cdeper thinks that his machine needs te
be kept going vigorously te elect Heaver,
and tliat he has imperative need of live
thousand dollars. It appears, heneer,
that he needs much mere than thi moder
ate sum, since a fifty dollar contri
bution from all te whom he has sent
this fervent appeal would amount te much
mere. " One humlrtd " is doubtless iv
misprint for one thousand, because we
cannot believe that Brether Coeivr would
net have been mero successful in picking
ent the places where he would be likely t
find fifty delhrs, if he had only had one
hundred te select ; evidently he was some
what wild and a trifle desperate when he
alighted upon the I'enn Iren company as a
likely place te find a llfty.dellar contribu
tion for the Republican campaign fund.
fi We de net knew with hew much knout
edge of people and things Brether Coeikt
should lie credited, but as an old and ex
perlenced chairman of the state committee
probably he should be deemed te h,ieat
least a fair acquaintance with the men of
the state; and particularly, when he asks
them for contributions and assures them
that he Iia3 selected them as the most
likely sources of supply, does it seem that
he should b credited w 1M1 a knowledge of
the people he addresses.
We should, hewew'r. be pleased te knew
from brother C'oeier wheieupen lie based
his hepe of fitly de'lirs fmm (tie IV1111
Iren company, of which the chaw nun
is Mr. Steinman, of the Imellkicv
ceh, and the secretary and tr.asurer, itr.
Charles SteinmanFeltz, also an owner and
anassistanteditoref tliis journal , the ether
managers of the I'enn Iren company being
W. B. Middleton, superintendent, A. II.
Teaceck, of Conestoga furnace, and Jehu
Keller, railroad builder. Aa the latter
three are Republican in politics, the rea
sonable conclusion is that brother Cheiht
expected them te override the two Demo
cratic members of the beard of managers,
and ete him the fifty dollars for
Beaver.
But brother Cooper needs te be mfeinud
that the I'enn Iren company, like all
ether well conducted business houses, is
entirely without political partisanship in
its management. Its men are employed
for the skill and capacity they have in the
duties asked from them, and without in
quiring as te their polities. I ta custemen.
are served without iegard te their politics.
Mr. Cooper need sorely te be advised
that politics and business aie two eI
different things. Mr. ( "oeper may have a
suspicion of this from the business en
tanglements of his candidate for geu-imi
with the Bellefonte Iren company. AVe
will confirm ids suspicion by mildly advis
ing him that it is net reasonable in him
te expect a campaign contribution
from any business flnu of re
spectable business instinct. All ciieli
contributions by wise business men me
made personally. They divorce theiriKilitu-s
from their business as far as possible.
They may believe that the Kilitical princi
pies of one party are mere advantageous te
their business than theso of the ether, but
they recognlze the fact that them 13 no
unanimity or opinion in this legaid in the
business community with which they are
in relations; and as it will net de te cenliue
their trade te one paity, ee it is net cenect
business conduct te make their business
firm a political instrument.
We regret te disapieint brother Coepei 's
hope of fifty dollars from the I'enn Iieu
company, but we are sure that there
is no chance of a movement te that
eudby the "wicked partners" in the major
ity and that it will be leug, under Its pi esent
'management, before political checks aie
ssued by the I'enn Iren company.

the fact that store orders are net. in the

The Under Currents of the I'ntna...
As the day of the rennsjlvama election

of popular sentiment in the great battle of
