Mr. Christian Hllll'el, or this city, lias shed
additional light upon the history of ihe old
Hand mnusleu. InlS'iShls father Andrew
Stillel, came ever the ocean from (Iermany,
nnd journeyeil in a flvo-herso wagon from
Philadelphia te Lancaster. When standing In
Contre Kquare.lu front of the old court heuse,
shortly alter his arrival, he was approached
by Dr. Samuel llumes, who was doubtless
ntt rac ted by hit foreign dress Biul hit sturdy
bearing. The emigrant worn beets and
lonther brenchne, nnd a long coat reaching tn
the knees with Immense bras buttons. Atter
a short conversation Mr. Humes was se well
pleased wllh the common sense dlspliyed
liy tlie old man that he cOncolved the lde.1 of
making use of hlui te quiet the foolish sterieH
atieut tlie old Krickleril mansion, and made
him a liberal eiler. "Tliere It a line large
heuse near town built in geed style by ene
of our famous men. Yeu may live tliere
rent free, nnd hae grazing ler your
cows and an aero of ground for your garden
all for nothing." The (iennati emlgmnt
went te cee tlie place. He found a
family named lluihmau living In a
small tenant heuse en the ether slde
el the llttle valley and they expressed the
greatest attoiiltliiiient when they heard that
anyone preimsed tollve In the old mansion.
With great dllllculty he iersuaded the
woman tn let hlui inspncl tlin haunted heuse,
which was mnnlled by a thick grewtli of
poison vines covering windows and door
ways and wreathing the columns of the
bread perches. Finally the heavy key was
turned In the rusty lock and the bread deer
swung back Inte the wlde dark hall. The
woman who bad brought the key Hed in
terror tn tlin farther end of the garden
ami Urn Imld (lerman Hloped alene Inte
the hall. He noticed ilrst that tlie celling of
the hall whs painted blue, that every thing
looked as though no human being had been
thore for many n long year, nnd then that
" everything sounded hollow at he walked."
Hut be was net the man te be alarmed by the
re ertKiratlnu of his own loetstops, and he ex
plored tlin place from reef te cellar. In the
room te the loll of the deer he found every
thing lelt Just at It had been en tlie morn,
Ing el the terrible tragedy that threw he
black n pall ever tlie old place. An old arm
chair was drnwn tip beforea table, the oilier
furniture steed close about the wall, nnd en
the Ingrained carpet near a window wero the
large dark stains of bleed.
In the cellar the grass was growing w.tlst
high, nnd here wero found snakes in abund
ance. IflllTtNO Till: (IIIOsTM.
Mr. Andrew Sllllel took possession and
lived thore with his lamlly for seven years,
but In Hpite or the wild stories of tlielr neigh
Isirs, they noversawor heard anything that
npiiearcd supernatural. Mr. Htlllel romoin remoin romein
burs the old place well nnd his boyhood thore,
the three perches, the wlde halls and wind
ing stairway, and the fatal room that was
always kept locked. Hetween the old build
ing and the small heuse en the ethor side of
Iho valley there used te be a high
Monewall stretching across the ravine,
nnd ngalust one side of this wero
built the deg kennels w here the gcneral nnd
his seu kept their hunting pack. On the
ethor side visitors tiisl their lienet when
they imiiie riding out Irem town, for in theso
days the buggy was unknown and nil wero

the Koeloy steve works. The flremnn did
net knew his assailant's name and tried
te pacify hint, remarking te tlie meulder,
that he, Holdlnger, wat a gontleman.
The lie was given. Heldlnger said, "I'll
take that," and the meulder tben turned and
without the slightest provocation knocked
Preston down. Te prevent further trouble
Heidlnger turned and attempted te leave the
Raloen. As be did se William Sherry, an
other meulder at the Keeley, sprang upon
him and forced him Inte a corner whero he,
Sherry, and James W. Lyens, who, It Is be
lieved, was the meulder who Ilrst assaulted
the railroader, began pummellng him. Hold Held
Inger begged te be let alene and rocelvod

as he aimed blew after blew at the

which he again attempted te leave
the saloon ; but he was prevented and, fi
nally, seelng he was being worsted, called
out : " Heir protection 1" and drew a Ien

Thus be succeeded In reaching the deer and
quickly left the saloon. He started for home
and meeting Jeseph F. lllack, stepped and
told bis story. As he was doing he, Sherry
came down Frent stroet, and It is probabie
that bad it net been ler Keidinger's deter

and there been renewed.
Such are the facta as given the writer by
Heldlnger, who, wheu we visited him, wat
con lined tn the "iron-clad," having been
placed there by Ofllcer Wittick, who arrested
him at bis home en Union street.
Harry Bhlmmel, a meulder at the Keoley,
wat a witness te the light, but his account Is
rather vague. He was passing down Frent
street, when Sherry and Lyens called him
Inte Snyder's saloon. A short while arter
wards lieldtnger entered. Sherry stag
gered towards him, and Shlmmef,
fearing trouble, arose te held him
back, when Sherry exclalmed, " I am
stabbed I" Stlmmel could net tell hew
Lyens was injured ; but stated that alter
Sherry's cry Heidlnger left the saloon.
Sherry and Lyens are retlclent as te the
origin and progress of the tight. Te Soulre
Kvans the former stated that he had net
liegun the tight ; neither could he Ray
Heidlnger had. Lyens did net knew why
he had been cut ; he had given Holdlnger no
cause te knife him.
Sherry's wounds were dressed by Drs.
Market and Hornthelsel, at the Central phar
macy. They consist of tlve cuts, one two
inches long, by two and a half deep, en the
left Rboulder ; the third, an eiglit-inch rut, It
en the back, above the region of the heart,
with two smaller cuts close by.
Lyens' hat but one wound, a stab, and Dr.
Livingstone, who attended him, considers it
serious. It Is a knife thrust between the bth
and 9th ribs, en the left slde and Is very
deep.
Tula morning, en the statements of Drs.
Livingstone and Markel that the wounded
men were in no Immediate danger. Held

which the row happened, called upon the
writer this morning, and made the following
statement: "Sherry, Lyens aud an
another man onterod my saloon about
5:30 o'clock. All three wero he drunk
they could hardly stand. They atked
for liquor, but it was refused them.
They thou abused my seu who was

some business te transact went Inte my yard.
Presently we heard a row In the saloon, l
entered and found the meulders wrangling
with Heldlnger. I quieted them and they
again asked for liquor, aud for the second
tlme were refused. 1 then went Inte the
yard again. The light In which the stabbing
occurred hapiened while I was in the yard
aud 1 cannot tell who struck the first blew."
