The Cae of Meronlme.
It is said that Ceronlme has succeeded In
placing himself under the protection of a
legal quibble, by making it the one condi
tion of his surrender that he should net
be turned ever te the civil authorities.
His surrender was accepted with this con
dition, under the impression that he could
be tried by n military commission, and new
that It Is found that such a commission cm
only be summoned in time of war, there
are many and loud denunciations of Majer
Lawten.
Tills tale appears altogether tee thin,
for it is well-known that the elncers of our
army are well versed in martial law, the
practice of it beiug their chief amusement
and business, when net engaged in pursu
ing savages through the beuudless AVest, or
practicing cannibalism near the north iele.
That n major of cavalry should net knew
that a commission can only be summoned
in time of war, if such is the case, is al
most incredible, but the capture of Gero Gere Gero
nime being the most important point, and
his ability te avoid capture being quite re
spectable, it would appear that the major
acted with prudence iu accepting him
upon se trilling a condition.
The impression prevails that the chief
executive of this nat'en will be able te
settle the Geronime question in such a
manner as te reconcile any condition with
the obliteration of the savage chief.

"Only two bases en eer der fence," yolled

The ball was recovered, a noisy argument

By this tlme a crowd had gathered. it

Then the "Yeung Ansons" eniue up in b
