Columbia, r., August 23. Fer some

creak, raw niHes from Columbia, liave been
vary much annoyed with the prosenco ei
numeroue tramps. These men are oncaiiiped
along the creek and obtain their living
principally by robbing the surrounding
farm houses, A. lady living near the place
baa been se badly frightened by some of the
tramps that her life Is despaired or. Tbey
have been building a number or llres along
the creek which greatly endanger the sur
rounding properties. Information or their
conduct was received In Columbia and a
haul was determined en. Otllcer Gilbert ami
two assistants went alengtheChlckles creek
cm Sunday and aucceeded In arresting
lirteen or the number. The farmers living
lu the neighborhood rendered valualile
assistance m helping te arrest them. They
were brought te town lasteveulng and placed
lu the borough lockup, seven In ene cell ami
eight In another. This morning when a visit
was made te the lockup, the eltlcer was very
much chagrined te noticetlioausoucoof sevrm
el the tramps. The men In eue cell had
made their escape by removing the binge
rrem the deer and then getting into the corri
dor. They told the eight men in the ether
cell te rest quiet and they would return and
liberate them. Hew they get from the corn cern cern

Is never left about the place and the lock
shows no signs of being tampered with. This
morning Olllcer Gilbert went te the country
te summon witnesses te be at thu hearing at
theoilleo of Squire llershey, which will take
place te-day.

On the night of Saturday, October 21, IsSe,
an attempt was made te enter the residence
of Mrs. K. Jacob's ou Seuth l'rent street, by
a man who was Identified as Kebert Orillith.
The following day Grlfllth came te the house
for the purpose of ex plaining that he was In
toxicated the night before, vvheu he learned
that the police were alter him, and he lett
town In a hurried manner.
A warrant was placed in the hands el Ofll
rer Wlttlck, who had visited several places
In erder te arrest the man. On last Saturday
night Wlttlck succeeded iu arresting Urillltli,
who bad been en a visit te his home uear the
Lancaster pike. He was placed in the lockup
and given a bearing before Squire Evans
this morning. In detaultef&OO ball OriflUh
was taken te jail for a trial at court ou the
charge of attempting te enter a dwelling in
the night time for the purpose of committing
a felony.

The victory of the Columbia club en last
Saturday afternoon, at Lancaster, ever the
sain l- leius ciuu ei iieaamg, greatly pieaseu
the friends of the home club. The score by
tunings, was received during the game at
several places lu town. The club was escorted
from The train by a large crowd et admiring
friends.
Town Notes.
A house en Seuth Second street, the prop
erty of Henry Houseal, of Maytown, was
otlerod at public sale, last Saturday night, at
the Franklin house. The dwelling was
-withdrawn at $550.
The Columela Camping club, composed of
thirteen young men of town, left this morn
ing for the Cnderus creek, where they will
encamp for one week.
TMe ChesBieake Camping club, of Lancas
ter, passed through town this morning, en
route for Havre-de-Grace, Md. The club
travelnd In a special car and were accom
panied by the Ironville band.
Andrew Shlbe, living en Seuth Fifth
street, was working at the round boiue of the
Pennsylvania railroad, en Sunday, when he
broke the small bone in bis fore-arm. He
was using a hammer at his work, and made
a mis stroke, striking his arm with the
abeve result. A doctor attended the injury.

A Man Offers te bell a Team at a Very Lew
Figure.
Alfred F. Kirk, who says he is from near
Pert Deposit, was arrested this morning en
suspicion of being a horse thief, llocameto
Lancaster this morning and was driving a
roan tiorse, hitched te a bar spring buggy.
He endeavored te sell the team at dltlerent
places and seemed anxious te get an ay in a
hurry. He visited several stables and ellernd
te sell the turnout at different tlgures. He
tirst asked $175 but finally said be would will
for $100. Olllcer Lea man followed the man
aud finally, with Special Olllcer Gill took
him Inte custody, at the Franklin house.
Kirk says that he Is a blacksmith and
he sold several teams. The derse which he
bad wben arrested he traded for at lllue Dell,
Providenco township. The buggy which
was found in his possession was made by
A 1 tick At Sen, of this city, whose mark ft
bore. It was fermerly the property of Win.
Grason, who resides near Klsing Sun, Md.
Kirk had a watch aud JiKl iu money en his
person, when arrested, aud he will be held
until an Investigation is made.
Hecklers Hiding.
William D. l'.ey,whtle under the lullueute
of liquor ou Saturday night, was riding a
horse recklessly lu the neighborhood of the
Eastern market, te the great danger et pedes
trians. Marketmaster Grell arrested and
detained him until Olllcer lleeculer arrived,
when be was taken te the station house.
Complaint was made against him befere
Alderman A. F. Dennelly for fast driving
and drunkenness aud disorderly conduct,
anil accused entered ball for a hearing.
Fry's horse almost rau into the open deer
et Fralley's drug stere en the corner of East
King and Shippen streets. The horse struck
bis bead against the wall of the building and
fell heavlly te the pavement.

A meeting or the Republican county com cem com
mittee was held in Grand Army hall this
morning. Soen after the meeting was
upened they went Inte executive bessleu ler
the purpose of assessing the dltlerent candi
dates. The following ure the sums they will
have le pay : Congress, faye ; district at
torney, teOO; senator, $300 ; assembly (except
city), $115 each ; peer directors aud prison

held at Penryn by people from Cornwall.

Stealing a Car Hide.
Michael Lyte, a man aged 22 years, who
says he resides at Holyoke, Massachusetts,
where he has a Mite, was badly hurt at the
Harrlsburg turnpike, just west of Dillen ille
ttt an early hour this morning. Lyte was
stealing n ride ou an castoru-beuml freight
train, and wheu the train reached the bridge
which cresses the turnpike he wastbrenn
from a car. He fell threuch the brldeeand
struck upon the bard turnpUe bed under
neath. He was seen te fall by tw e gentlemen,
named Haverstick and Wenger, residing lu
the ceuntrr. He was brought te town by
Jehn Graetl aud taken te the county hospi
tal. His nese was brokeu, nud he was very
badly cut aud bruised, but none el his limbs
were broken.

On Saturday evening Charles Kiug, tlie
baseball pitcher, was driving along East

On Sunday a son or Jesse Nye and a boy
named Benewlt were playing wheu the latter
pretended te cut the lermer with a pen knife.
Nye threw up bis arm and the knife struck
him, cutting a gash about three inches lu
length.

On Saturday evening engine Ne 1, or the
city fire department, was brought dewu te
Centre Square, and was ued te threw water
ever the soldiers' monument, which was
given a complete washing. The stream was
Kent high In the air and all ever the square.
