AUGUST S3. IS. n i A fold Falsehood. An inconsequential local scribbler sent out of this town en Saturday te a Philadel phia journal information that the retire ment of Mr. Ilensel from the Intelli Intelli eencek was due te a political difference ; and thatbecauseMr.IIenscl favored Black and Mr. Stcinman desired Wallace for the gubernatorial nomination, the partnership bad been dissolved. This allegation is as false as it is mali cious, and it is all the mere reprehensible because the truth of the situation was se easy of ascertainment. The change that was inaugurated en Saturday in the owner ship of this journal has been in contempla tion for mere than six months, and had no reference te politics. And, Dually, both wings of the editorial policy of this paper have always flapped to gether en all questions, political and ether wise, and the attempt te create the impres sion that there was a difference of opinion en the question of gubernatorial availa bility will fail because it is founded oil a lie. This explanation is given in the hope that truth will put en a pair of three leagued beets and catch up with this bald falsehood. I The Grand Jury's ltepert. The grand jury engaged in the work of quarter sessions court last week, and whose full report appears elsewhere, did several geed things and one unwise thing in their week's labor. The latter was the recem mending of a $2,000 appropriation for the in firmary department in the Heme for Friend' less Children. There is no doubt about this being a most worthy charity, but Judge rattersen hit the nail en the head 'when he said that the taxpayers of Lancaster county already paid $10,000 annually ferthe maintenance of this institution, and if mete was needed, the state should be ap plied te, and net the county. The benev olent recommendation of the graud jury was creditable te their hearts, if net their heads. This seems te be the only blemish in the report of the grand inquest. They set a geed example in the brevity ami concise ness of their statements for future grand inquests te fellow. They condemn the jail, as de all sonsible men. They most properly censurethe county commissioners for their high-handed action in awarding the court-heuso painting, an act te which this journal called attention at the time. They animadvert upon the practice of fill ing subpoenas with names of these who knew nothing that the grand jury want, which negllgence imposes an additional burden upon the graud jury aud a very material increase in the witness bills en the county. With the exception noted, the grand jury has done its work well; and they are fully entitled te the thanks which the court tendered them. Clergjiueu as Cyclers. In our news columns te-day will be found the account of the close of the bicycling tour of the clerical wheelmen, who, under the command of Itev. Sylvanus Stall, of this city, have been riding through the most picturesque poitien3 of Central and Eastern New Yerk. There was a time when such an excursion would have been regarded as a meat scan dalous piecedure. In the olden das of the Xew England " blue laws" a clerical bicycler would have most probably been treated te an experience with the ducking- steel. Hut the world grows wiser as it "adds te IU years, aud the tour of the ministerial party te-day attracts comment only be cause of its delightful novelty. These expounders of the sacred word will reenter their pulpits with n mere springy Btep, and their seimens will catch some of the new llfe and inspiration thathavecome te them from their communing with nature while skimming ever the country en their silent steeds. The man of Ged is restricted in his pleas ures because of the high dignity of Ids sa luuuuuice. 11 me uicycie iiuerus mm a means of recreation, by all means let him have it, for it will bring in goodly tcturns a thousand fold, both for himself and his congregation. Mr. lllack'a Preeminent Fltnci. Solicitor General Jenks is quoted in a Washington interview as very much grati fied with the nomination of Lieutenant Governer Mack for the Democratic guber guber uaterial candidacy, because he is the most available candidate upon whom te make a contest en living issues and represents the young bleed of the party. This is well. Hut there are ether reasons for Mr. Ulack's fitness beside his avallabll ity and his representatlvenesj of the youth f ul enthusiasm that lias been such a large facterin the party'ssuccess in recent years. Of course, this Is net the diplomatic langiWRO used in de scribing the event, but this Is what the news means when read between the lines. This practice of making rejalty the scape-EO.il of a uevernnient's sln3 has many advantages. It Is the throwing out of an Inconsequential tub te the ravenous public whale. J. I). Carmedy, of Kvanavllle, Ind., contended that tbe het water system was cheaper ana required less trouble and attention than steam, lie raid IU superior durability was uuquestlened. The greatest advantage, however, possessed by Uie het waterever steam, be added, was the steady, moderate temperature it pro vided, while ateam -nas volatile, being one minute at a burning temperature, the nest far below summer heat. He did net con sider a high temperature conducive te per fect health and a sturdy growth of bedding plants. The advantages et steam ever het water were contended for by J. 11. Tayler, of Bayslde, N. Y. lie held that plan's could be grown better by steam than het water. "This," said he, "is owing te the Tact of hav ing the temperature and moitture entirely under control during the summer months. Therefore the grower using steam te heat his houses has this advantage ever the one using het water that he is net dependent en the outside conditions of the atmosphere. Hav ing the beat under such perfect control, it is possible te fire early and late In tbe tall, and, if necessary, during the summer." Te the outsider the whole discussion leeks like a light ever tweedledum and twoeuledoe. Maxwell Stevenson, who has worked his way, by manly labor et liralu and muscle, lrem a rolling mill te a nomination for con-gressmau-at-larce by the party of the peeple, will surely draw a large vole from the labor ing men who have as true an admiration for the plnck of "Llttle Max," as they call him, as ever tbe soldiers had for that gallant Dem ocratic soldier, " Little Mac" Mils. "llecau-u a gifted mau has power te accumulate property, he has no right te arrogantly say, 'this is mine and I will spend It as I please.' The wealth of the world is designed for the public welfare; and It is the duty of these who have it iu charge te consider thorn selves as only agent, bound te use It he as te serve the greatest geed." This is the conclusion which a clergyman would naturally reach, aud, as It does net point te an ltntnedlats settlement of a ques tion which unsettled menaces the public poace, It will meet with small laver. But te us it appears that Mr. Uutumlngs U right lu fixing ethical referm as the only reform that will forevor rnake ieace between capital and labor. Hut this movement must begin with the people that are well-to-de, and as the poorer claf sea gradually reach a condition of greater comfort, they may be contented, the rich men perBiiaded te ewape the tare of riche, aud the dream of the communists realized without communism. Ily that time the ice caps of the lules, w hlch sclence tells us are creeping slowly south ward will, we (ear, have met beneath the tropics and the last man, concentrating in his person the capitalist and the laborer, will dle at peace with all mankind.
