with debris. Business was entirely suspend

telegraph wires are all down and there la no
connection south of here.
News from Cuero aay the aterm was very

from the country say the aterm waa very
violent, damaging crops and destroying prop
erty. A special train from Indlanela brings
the sad news as te that place. A relief
party that went down en It reports the follow
ing ; When the train arrived within tour
tulles of indlanela the tracks were washed
nut very badly and were partly gene The
party walked within half a mile or the town
In water waist deep and could go no farther.
They saw Mr. Clements across the bayou.
The bridge was washed away. It Is reported
that Uie lower end of the town Is gene, from
Mrs. Logns'te the Ice house, en both sides of
the street The wharf Is also gene. There
are supposed te be many lives lest, as many
persons are missing. The only body found
was that of the sister-in-law of Mr. Hedges, of
Cuero, Texas. It was discovered this side of a
stream about two miles from town, lying In
the water by the side of the track.
Seme houses were burned. The lire Is sup
posed te have been caused by the lamps In
tbe railing houses. Among the persons
missing are Dr. Lewis, Capt Reed, Or.
Rosecrans, Mrs. Sheppard and family, and
Mm Uedges and two children. Henry
Sheppard was found across the lake, very
badly bruised, but still alive. Mrs, Max
Luther lest her two children. One or them
died In her arms.
Awful Storm en a North Atlantic Island.
Bosten, Aug. 21 An Ottawa dispatch te
the A tlvertiser says a special rrem the gov
ernor or St Pierre, Ml(., te the department
here gives an account of a most violent storm
which swept ever that island en Wednesday
night, the fiercest known for a quarter of a
century. Buildings were blown down In
every direction and considerable damage was
done te the shipping. Twe vessels were
driven ashore and wrecked and many men
were drowned.

Wahuinqten, I). C, Aug. 2L The print
ing of the new ten-dollar Bllver certificate be
gan at the bureau et engraving and printing
yesterday. Tbe design of this note, as has
alien. J y been stated In these dlspatehes, in
cludes a well-executed portrait of the late
Vice-President Hendricks. The work is be
ing executed en tbe new distinctive paper
which was manufactured expressly for the
new silver certificates. About five thousand
Impressions were taken yesterday, and as
each sheet contains four notes, 200,000 worth
of silver certificates, have passed through tbe
llrst process en their wsy te the pnblic
About thirty days will be required te finish
tbem and have them ready for circulation,
but It Is understood they will net be Issued
.befere the middle of November when the
ones and twos are expected te be prepared
for Issue. The designs for the latter denomi
nation are new being transferred te steel, and
the plates will probably be ready for the
printers about the middle of next month.
The design for the ten-dollar plate was com
menced some tlme before Congress author
ized tbe printing of the new Issue of oer eer
tthcates,aa It was deemed advisable te replace
the old design with the Hendricks note.
This explains why the largest denomination
is se much further advanced than the de
signs for the smaller notes. As seen aa the
plates for the latter are prepared the full com
plement of empleyes at the bureau will be
put te work te expedite their circulation.

A Ferry float Strikes the Ship VIeleuUy-A
Man Drowned.
Nkw Yekit, Aug. 21. When the ferry
boitNew Brunswick, of the Pennsylvania
railroad ferry,came Inte the Desbreeaes street
Up this morning, the engine refused te
work at the moment the pilot rang the
signal te "back water." As a result the
beat struck the piles at the entrance
te the slip with great terce. The
concession was se great that in the recoil an
Adams express wagon that was en the beat
near tbe chalnB went ever into the slip.
Patrick McNulty, a deck hand, who attemp
ted te atop It, went along. The beat crew made
every endeavor te save them, but were un
successful. The wagon and baggage were
recovered. McXulty's body waa carried
away by the tide and was net found. A third
horse belonging te the Pennsylvania railroad
company want ever tee, and was drowned
in the general confusion.

Barbie, Ont, Aug. 21. Themas and Wil
liam Tayler, brothers, et Hillsdale, and Jehn
Hamilton, H years or age, went out Ashing
yesterday in a rickety old beat en Air lake,

and the body or Wm. Tayler was found
standing upright In the water, one hand
grasping the fishing pole, while the line was
wrapped around his limbs. The bodies or

verdict of accidental drowning while bathing

ing of Columbia reuccil was held In the
council chamber last evening with all the
members present except Mr. Ilerahey.
The property committee reported tliat pari
of the Insurance policies en the opera house
will expire en September S'th. The president
was instructed te issue an order for J3ft
for the payment of the renewal et the tire
insurance. The property oemmlttoo were
Instructed te place an Insnrance of K,000
en the market house. The bids of the Celum
bia Klectrlc Light andl'ewer company for the
lighting or tne boreugu ei loiumeia wun
electric light were read and were at the same
rate as presented at the last regular meeting.
A motion was made by Kckmsn, that a con
tract be made with the Klectrlc Light com
pany for lurnlshlnR SO electric light", for one
year rrem October 1st, for J2.800, and for any
additional lights the town may want, at the
rate of ?11Q .t.1 per light per year. Carried
unanimously. The placing of mere lights
about the town was thoroughly discussed
and Westerman suggested that council order
three mere lights te be placed at Trent and
Mill, Second and Union, and Fifth and
Cherry streets. A motion was made by Mr.
Kckman that lights be placed at these points.
A vote being taken resulted as fellows :

Mr. Bucber.
A motion was made by Mr. Bucher that
the Pennsylvania telephone company be
taxed, for each pole within the borough

A proposal was read from II. F. Bruner for
furnishing the opera house during the com
ing winter with coal at the rate et J2.25 per
ten for buckwheat and 2.69 per ten for pea
ceaL The bid was accepted. On motion el
Mr. Bucher that the solicitor proceed at once
te collect, by process of law. all Hens entered

have been entered, and also that liens be

The market of this morning was very
largely attended. On Locust street, between
Second and Third, ever forty market wagons
were standing.
The bridge ever the gutter at Locust street
and Bank alley has been In a dangerous con
dltlen for some time past. Werk was com
menced this morning In putting the bridge
In geed repair.
In pulling down a large tree en Walnut
street, yesterday afternoon, a large rope was
nsed. In some manner the rope broke and
the men, holding te It, were thrown about
the street. Onoeftbe number thought the
tree was falling and went up the street in a
hurried manner.

last Tuesday, aged seventy-seven.

bam near Fairfield.
McSparran.t Ce. are busy packing the pop
ular " Old Colony " corn. They have made
a number of geed sales ter future delivery at

Fer a little variation we had a wedding
last Wednesday. Mr. Sanders McSparran
was the lucky man and Miss Bell F. Hides,
daughter of B. F. Sides, M. D., the ether
party te the contract It was a quiet wed wed
dlng,eccurring in the atternoen,and they are
oft en a trip. We threw our eldest shoes
and whole bags of rice after them.
Mr. 1. B. Shank, who runs the coal and
lumber business at Peach Bettem, has control
of the steam ferryboat at that place. Fer the
last two years this beat and ferry have been
managed by the i'each Bettem railroad, and
was a nuisance. Under the control or 'Mr.
Shank the ferry has been doing a largely
Increased business and greatly te the advant
age and comfort of the patrons.

An Inyalry for Twenty-Six Bodies.
Governer Paulsen has sent a letter te the
eQlcers of the Susquehanna Coel company
calling their attention te the complaints of
the relatives el the twenty-six miners who
were entombed last December at Nontlceke,
and asking If the company can take further
action toward the recovery of the bodies. The
State Geoieglstand Mine Inspector Williams,
in their reports te Governer Pattlaen, both
agree that further attempts at rescue would
be foolish.
Mr. Parnrll Thanks the Convention.
Mr. Parnell has sent the following cable
message te Judge Fitzgerald, the newly
elected president or the Irish National League

Lean had florid hair and a high animated
temperament. He was an ardent admirer ei
Stephen A. Ieuglas, whose cause be advocated
ter years. His wife was a Kentucky ladyer

bis father's share in tbe concern and he seen
bought out the Interest of Mr. Farran. The
great success of tbe journal dates from
this time. Nothing thai could be done

ted by the young proprietor and he used the
telegraph te an hitherto unknown extent, as
far as Western journalism weut. Te this he
added rare business tact and an unswerv lng
partisanship that made his journal the favor
ite among tne Democrats et the West. He Is
always zealous In advocating the cause of a
friend and is an outspoken decisive enemy.
He remained a bachelor until Oct. 1SSI, when
he was married te Miss Emllv S. Beale, the
daughter or General Edward F. Beale, who
is noted ter bis ultra American views.
During and following the election or l5S
the name et Mr. McLean was mixed up
wltli the election frauds and it was ru
mored that he wished te succeed Jehn
Sherman In the United States Senate. The
affair at the time premised te end in a gen
eral riot, but It was finally smoothed ever.

en the Street.
Cumberland, Md., Aug. 21 Wm.
Herner, a well-known buslness man of this
city, met Dr. Madden en the street near the
postelllce about nine o'clock last night and
opened flre upon him with a thirty-eight
calibre bull-deg revolver. The first shot
struck the doctor en theferebeadandglanced
off , the second entered his right side. The
doctor then grabbed the pistol and a police
man arrested Herner. Madden's wound,
which is serious but net necessarily fatal
was probed but the ball could net be found.,
Herner was locked up, He declares he In
tended te kill tbe doctor, who he says at
tended bis wife professionally and annoyed
her. There Is considerable scandalous talk
atleat about tbe relations of tbe parties.

New Yerk, Aug. 21. The American
Surety company,of New Yerk, caused the ar
rest te-day et Jehn A. Uamley, tbe abscond
ing manager of the elHce of the United Lines
Telegraph company, at Tolode, Ohie.
The Surety company, who have been look
ing for Hamley Hlnce last March, have so se
cured an Indictment against blm for ember

Jacob F. Wolfer and Harry F. Rudy re
turned from a two days' bunt In the vicinity
el Andrews Bridge. They brought with
them twenty-llve groundhogs, eight opos
sums and thirty-three doves.
Jehn Cllne, Charles Franclscus and Frank
Clark killed seven groundhogs and twenty
four doves en Thursday.
Yosterday Geerge Hclse, Henry Denlinger
and Samuel Dlller went down the county
and killed thirty-five doves.
