The men who have the contract for blast
ing out tbe re'k en the spot where the new
hotel is te be built, near the Pennsylvania
railroad, seem te care little for the lives ei
eeple. The papers of this city have often
called attention te the fact that the blasting at
this place was tee betvy and tee carelessly
done. The reefs of a great many bennes In
the neighborhood have been broken by
stones railing upon them, and a num
ber of peeple have escaped from be
ing struck bv large stones only by a
few Inches. Many persons have vlsltsd
the contractor ami asked nlm te be mere
carelul, but Instead or complying with their
wishes he appears te make the blasting
heavier, i no pence nave aise neiineu mm,
but no attention whatever is paid te them. A
few days age a gentleman was walking out
East Chestnut street en his way home.
While en the pavement at the stone wall Just
oppeslto the new hotel site, a blast n as put
efl. A stone was hurled toward Chestnut
street and it struck tbe man's bat, knocking
it etr bis bead, but he escaped without any
injury.
On Wednesday the blasting was again very
heavy. About four o'clock a heavy charge
was sent oil, and a stone larger than a peck
measure was carried ever the hotel or 1-red.
Waltz. It struck the reef of the railroad
passenger station, through which It crushed,
tailing en the iloer In front of the restaurant
and making a hole in the reef alinestas large
as a wheelbarrow. Smaller stones were
thrown all around the neighborhood and
ctber roots were damaged w bile many per
sons made narrow escapes.
At tne time of the blasting there were
several backs standing ou the Chestnut
street side or the station. The horse of
Edward McGeeban Irlghtened aud ran into
an expresi wagon; the hack as upset and
badly broken, while the express wagon was
generally damaged. Had the shot been fired
two hours earlier w hen the station was filled
with passengers, as it always is early in the
afternoon, nothing have prevented n terrible
accident.
I'M morning Mayer Morten called en Mr.
Kendlg, who is doing the blasting for the
new building. He told blui that there was
a great deal of complaint from citizens about
the careless manner In which they were
blowing the rock, and folks were afraid of
injury te memseives as wen as tueir proper
ties. Mr. Kendlg said that the cause or yes
terday's stone throwing was e lng te the pe
culiar klud or rock, which Is selt in some

be mere careful In the luture, and said that
they had but a few mere blasts te make.
