Then dlea In flulterlnga 'mldit the trcea.
The benis alumbarlng In the tblatle.
And, new and thou, a broken whtatle.
A tread- hnm-a tap-la heard
Through tha dry leaves, In graaa and liuih,
A. Inaoet, animal and bird ...
Keiiae, briel from their lethargic hush.
Then, e'en these plesaant sounds would ceaae,
And a (lead tlllnea all thlnga leek,

The monarch plne'a deep tranen te waken,
And Naluie settle pnine In drowsy penco.

Heme yearn since a prominent gentleman
purchased llttle farm at Atlanta, (la. It
wasery peer, but he established a herd el
Jersey wand carried en the dairy liuslnoer,
prietlaing soiling, using lucerne, orchard
grass, prlrkley cemfrey and eat. At tha end
et (He years a oemmlttoo m appointed te
vlilt the farm and report en the crops by the
commissioner of ngrlculturoefOoorgla. This
was accordingly dena and a report made,
from which are gathered the following facta;
I'lrat, a plot of orchard grass was visited
and the grass cut from 100 squaw feet of sur
face of avorage quality and the produce
weighed 11 pounds, or at the rnle of 11,817
pounds per aero. After being thoroughly
dried the weight was 21 pounds; 1, 1 17. (J
pounds per aero 4.f7 tens.
Next a plot of eats was isited. 1 hese were
sewn In drills IS Inches apart, and from 151
square feet 318 pound, or 30,201 pound, per
acre. In the green state, were cut. On being
dried the weight win let pounds, erP,7l(lb
pounds 1,87 tens ier acre.
In a Held el lucerne, which was n little over
ripe, from 300 square loot was cut K pounds,
'or 13,71M per acre. When drled this wolghed
30;pounds, or -1,150 pounds 2,17 .tens per
aero,
The committee found that the avorage of
green crops would be 11 tens per acre, or 3.K7
tens of dry fedder. When It Is oensldorod
thst at the start the land was very peer and
had been In use only about fUe years, this
shows what can be done In the way of In
creased productiveness. It In probable that
very few farms aerage even two tens of dry
forage per aero of the surlace cut eer. The
gentleman referred te has no atlence with
the talk orapeorrountry.oxhaustod soil, etc
He says: "The fault Is net wltn the anil. The
earth Is mere genereus than man. Let the
agricultural Interest lilt up Its head. Let
farmers take pnde in Ibis, the noblest of pur
suits, lustead of regarding it as Inferior te
ether vocations, and our prosperity will be
boundless."
