The Sunday school of the United Brethren

A New Surer.
The borough supervisor and his gang of
workmen started at work this morning at
8ecend and Walnut streets, where a new
ewer will be put lu. This will be a much
needed Improvement, as the gutter crossing
at this place Is a dangerous one for wagons te
pass ever. A numberef broken springs bear
evidence te the roughness of Uiectesslng.
Tbe sewer will be built of terra colts pipes
and a hrst-class Jeb will be done.

On last Saturday alternoen Sherman
Swingler, member of the Columbia base
ball club, was at the grounds of the club
E radioing; ter a game. In running for a ball
eMIpped overan elevation en the ground,
spraining bis left ankle In a palnlul manner.
The accident will prevent ball playing for
some time.

The Active club, of 'WrishUvIUe, had

noon te play a game with the Columbia club.
The home teatn was en the field, but the
team from across the river failed te put In an
appearance.
The Columbia club will play the Actives,
of Heading, en Tuesday when a first-class
game may be expected. This club is the
champion of Reading and will present a
strong team te-morrow alternoen.

The St. Charles furnace, owned by Messrs.

Hen. L. S. Kaullman lias been sick for tbe
past week, but is new convalescent.

William Tayler, a young man employed
as driver at the grocery stere of J. V. i'enne
gar, Ceatesvllle, hired a horse at the livery
stable of Jehn Reynolds, that place, a few
Sundays age ter a drive te Illbernla, a few
miles distant When the young man re
turn ed three shoes were off the horse's feet and
It was badly used up. Tayler, fearing he
would be arrested, left town, and was
net seen until Thursday night, when he nut
In bis appearance, and was arrested by Offi
cers Itoeae and Linten. He was given a
hearing en Friday before 'Squire Themas,
when he(Reynelds)Baldtbe horse's feet were
bleeding, and it was in a terrible condition
when returned. The horse had been driven
all ever the country, and In order te settle
the matter he was willing te leave It te three
persona te fix the amount of damage.
Orabam Ham be, J. V. Pennegar and
C. N. Speakman wero selected, and
they agreed that M5 would be a fair com
pensation. Tayler was unable te procure the
money, but sent word te a gentleman in
Smyrna, Lancaster county, who Is his guar
dian. That gentleman arrived and had a con cen
lerenre with Tayler in the lock-up Friday
evening, but could net settle the matter. The
young man thinks it was a rather dear drive
and still occupies a front room at Tort John John Jehn
eon until the matter can be settled.
It has since been learned that Tayler has
been released en giving security for the
payment of tbe M5 and costs.
Four Men Fall Fre ma Scaffold.
Late en Friday afternoon lour men made
narrow escapes from death at the Lemen stree t
choel building. Win.MeMIcb.ael, Jno. Ferry,
Henry Ueruart, carpenters and an apprentice,
were working en the cupola of the school
building 00 teet from the ground, when the
acaueld breke and the four were thrown te
the reef, twenty feet below. McMlchael was
the most seriously lnJured,he falling first and
the ethers en top of him. The reef en which
they fell was Hat Had It been otherwise
mey wema nave fallen te the ground and
been instantly killed. McMlchael was sent
te his home and examination was made et
his body. He waa found te be badly cut
and bruised, but no bones were broken. He
Is new able te walk about and will get back
te work in a day or two. The ether three
men escaped with slight bruises.
Heugh en Chlckeus.
The chicken destroyer Is still alut, and
last night the premises of Geerge Bewman,
residing at Ne, S2S Seuth Queen street, were
visited. There were seven fine chickens in a
coop In the yard last evening, but only ene
remained this morning. Three were found
dead and three ethers were missing. One of
the dead chickens was cut about the head,
but there were no marks en the ether two.

was seen entering a saloon. The officer
arrestel him and Boyd was committed te jail

en T.J.V. King street. Recently a deg wan
dered into the store, apparently without an
ewner and young Miller ied it daily and
watched the pipers for an advertisement for
a lest deg. He did net see it, though It was
advertised. Manager A. A. Hellly, of the

recognized the deg as the property of Harry
Illrh, and meeting the latter at the races at

what he would give for the safe return of

went te Kckert's store, and without many

August Reenlg, a cooper, pretty well up In
years, who llved a sort of retired life near the
farm of Jehn S. Longeueckor, in Couewage

some days past but nothing serious was ex
pected. When he did net put in an appear
ance, however, friends went te his house and
discovered him dead in bed. An inquest
was held by Squlre Heller ami a verdict of
death Irem natural causes rendered.

S. W. Armlstead, assistant postmaster at
Danville, a., committed suicide Sunday af
ternoon by hanging blmseir te a gas-pipe In
the basement of the iosteffice building. He
left a letter saying that he was tired of Ufa
Nothing Is wrong In his accounts. He leaves
a wife and three daughters. The deceased
was a prominent man here and was past no
ble grand master In the order of Odd Fel
lows. He came there several years age from
Hampton, Va., and was a lawyer.

near Hickory Ureve, Providence township.
Seventy-five men were present and assisted
at the railing, which was one of the most
