The way passenger train, due in town at
0:58 a. m., was ever one hour la(e this morn
ing, caused by a wreck en tliorenusylvaula
railroad at Klnrer's station.
The pay car of the Pennsylvania railroad
arrived in town this alternoen, when the em em
peoyes of the read received their wages for
the month el June,
The main tracks of the P. B. It. are new
being put In llrst-class order. The rep.Urmen
are putting in new ties and rails.
The mlllef the Columbia Iren company is
working in an excellent manner. The mill
Is being visited by large crowds of people
and the manufacture of iron is watched
with interest.
Werk is progressing rapidly In tearing
down the buildings en the site where the St.
Paul's P. 13 church will be built.
The river has new cemmenced te rise,
caused by the heavy rains. The water is In
a very muddy condition.
Summer Leisure.
The plcnle el the Church et Ged Sunday
schools of Columbia and Washington, held
at Penryn park yesterday, was very
largely attended, despite the unlavorable
weather. The picnickers occupied fourteen
cars.
A game of ball wilt be played between the

next Saturday aftercoen, at three o'clock.
The Yerk team have an excellent reputa
tion and a geed game may be expected.
A pleasant plcnle was held yesterday at
Wild Cat Olen, and was largely attended.

gloomy that all the outdoor part of the pro pre
gramme in connection with the Kuights of
Pythias demonstration was postponed till to
day, when it is beiied the prize drill competi
tion, ever which much interest is manifested,
will take place. The visiting kuights spent
the day driving about the city in covered
backs, giving concerts in various centres of
the city, whlle their ladles generally engaged
in stiepplng. The supreme ledge or the
world was in session all day.
The special train which conveyed the
Flerida division te the city Is a centre of In
terest among citizens, and thousands visited
it during the day, and the Knights irem
Flerida presented prominent citizens with
alligators which they brought here with
them. This evening a grand concert was
given te the visiting Knights, in which promi
nent American and Canadian artists took
part Te-morrow, the last day, is oxpectcd
te be the best of the demonstration. There
i considerable speculation as te the next
place of meeting the supreme iodge will de
cide upon. Chicago and Cincinnati are the
only places that are regarded as at all llkely

most of the representatives favored Chicago,
and that It would undoubtedly get the most
votes.

this m erning, commencing at U o'clock, rain
or shine. It the weather Is Hue the competi

Through W. B. Gerhart, patent solicitor, a
patent, Ne. 315,322, dated July 13, 1mm,, has
been issued te Henry and Jehn S. Behrer,
fermerly of Iiucaster, for a new device ter
setting tires. In this tire-setter the tellies
arepressed inward by means or a compres
sion baud acting uniformly upon the entire
circumrereuce of the wheel, until they are
forced far enough te permit the tire te be put
en ; the fellies are then caught bv crips
which held thorn In ositleu te receive the
tire, the compression baud loosened, and the
tire adjusted. As the fellies are nressed
inward the spokes buckle sldewie;aud te
prevent the teiid in the spokes extending te
the hub and loosening them lu their sockets,
they are rested in sockets in a fulcrum wheel
placed near the hub. The fellies have elastic
joints fastened tetweeii them te permit them
te give te the pressure of the baud.

Dr. F. II. Bewer, who died leceutly in

s-Hla. Then the "old chappie" said "When,"
and Gawge helped himself. He lilted his
glass, looked at his Iriend, uedded at the
waiter, and said :

sorbed the beverage, aud thus did the great
