the annual market rents have all been col
lected without the receurse et law.
The light and water committee reported
that the water plug at Firth and Walnut
streets has been repaired and is In Reed
working order; electric lights woreoul for 5'
hours en the night of June 30th, and recom recem
mended the proper reduction.
The sanitary and police committee have re
ceived several complaints about the slaughter
houses ; have served notices te three owners,
and these parties have premised te keep
them in better condition and comply with
the ordinances.
The chief burgess reported the town, dur
ing the last month, quiet and orderly ; col cel
lBntfii! M.I for Hues and licenses. The tax
dupllcate of "V. G. Duttenhefer, collector of
borough taxes of 18S4, was settled, niter me
collector was oxeneratod from the payment
of certain taxes, largely due rrem single men
and tenants. The exoneration amounted te
JSS3.33. W. O. Duttenhefer was elected col
lector of deg tax for this year.
The law and ordinance committee ere in
structed te have a new ordinance book com
piled and printed. Order were granted In
favor or the Blnking fund for fSe.K and for
f 181.50 for the payment el coupons. A potltien
was recelved from a large number of tanners
attending market, asking that an afternoon
market be held once every week ; also a
petition from sixty te seventy-llve citizens
asking that Thursday afternoon be appointed

An ordinance was presented changing the
time of holding the market en Thursday,
Which was laid ever until the next regular
meeting. The highway committee were
authorized te grade Chestnut street from
Seventh te Ninth and Eighth streets, from

Accident at the Mill.
Jehn Henry, an empleye of the Columbia
rolling mill, met with a painful accident
yesterday hile at work at that place. In
seme manner he wart struck en the right side
et the lace with an Iren bar, cutting a
very severe gash under the eye, exposing the

Town Notes.
The first anniversary of the institution of
Columbia Ledge, Ne. 117, Brotherhood of
Railroad Brakemen, will be held en Thurs
day evening In the armory. The occasion
will be observed In an appropriate maimer.
The First National hank has declared a
semiannual dividend offeur per cent-; the
Columbia National bank a semi-annual divi
dend of three and a-half per cent, and a
three per cent semi-annual dividend has
been declared by the Columbia gas company.
The Sunday schools of the Church of fJed,
of Columbia and Washington, went te Pen
ryn park this morning en the union picnic.
Twelve carloads of people left the Heading .t
Columbia station, en the morning train, and
three hundred of this number came from
"Washington.
Workmen are new ongaged In repairing
the retaining wall el the Pennsylvania canal
above the locks.

Alderman's Orllce.
Tuesday evening William llel worthy had
a hearing before Alderman Deen, en the
charge of stealing a pair of horse-cllppcrs
from Charles McNay. The evidence was the
same as published In the Intklliei:nci:u
ou last Saturday, and the case was returned
te court McNay was represented by C. G.
Kennedy, esq., aud. Ilolwerthy by B. Frank
Eshleman, esq. A tilt lietween the counsel
made the hearing very lively. F.shleman
cress-examined McNay very closely and
asked him a number of questions which he
(McNay) and his ceunsel considered Insult
ing. This continued for some time, and
finally Kennedy made a remark about Kshle
uian. The ex-district attorney became very
UOt and demanded an anoieirv from K'n.
neJy. The latter positively relused te
apologize, and Kshleman insisted that he
should until after the hearing was ever. The
attorneys then get out ujKm the pavement
and Kshleman get held of Kennedy, slating
that he would net leave go of film until he
took back what he had said. Kennedy still
refused and a crowd seen gathered In front
of the alderman's ollice. Officer Weaver
finally separated the men and they did net
come te blows. Kennedy has net yet made
the much sought for apology.

Death of an Aged llurv.
An aged herse, familiarly known as "Old
Geerge," owned by Mr. Jacob llabecker,
near Newteu, died en the ,7th Inst, aged 'Zi
years, lie raked all the hay this summer
and was a geed and faithful animal aud much
thought of by his owner who buried him
upon his place near Big Chlckies creek.
