IiANOASTXB. JULY 13. 1SSS.
An Oracular Organ.
Our esteemed silly contemerary, the
Philadelphia 1'rcss, has discovered a fresh
Democratic boom for governor ; this time
Its victim is Maxwell Stevenson a very
estimable and reputable, man, by the way.
It Is needless te say that according te the
Press Mr. Randall Is pushing Stevenson
as he is also, according te our veracious
contemporary, pushing "Wallace, Guthrie,
Scott and Black, with some counties net
heard from.
The Press, in pursuance of its latest dis
covery of a " Randall candidate " makes
a Democratic city leader of familiar
fame " get off the following remarkable
statement in behalf of Mr. Stevensen:
When lie ran en the Greenback-Laber
"
ticket for congress in uie jl-irst district I
in 1878, no polled mera votes in that I
district man ..Masen, me l.aoer
candidate for governor, polled in
the entire city. TheDemecratic candidate
for governor was the late Gen. McCaudless
Stevenson get mere votes in several of the
Democratic wanls than McCandless did,
although hfi "was the regular Democratic
.JJOCiiireer"
Inte what pellucid fountain of Demo
cratic truth does our esteemed silly con
temporary let down its busy buckets V Let
the Democrats beware ! A few mere blaz
ing fire brands from the 1'ress will rend
the party into a thousand warring frag
ments, which will then be exterminated
piecemeal by Bess Quay.
Had Better Succumb.
It transpires that a Democratic state
senator of Missouri, ene J. V. Farris, was
the victim who was transfixed by the presi
dent's veto of a bill te inciease a cnsion cnsien
er's allowance for an increase, who had
been given 'nis Una pension for chronic
diarrheea, and asked for an increase for
sero eyes, resulting from it. The medical
referee who examined the case in October,
ISSe, reported that " the disease of the
eyes cannot be admitted te be a result of
chronic diarrheea." The president took the
same view of it in his veto message and
said rather caustically .
Tbe Ingenuity developed In the constant
and persistent attacks upon tbe public! treas
ury by these claiming jioiiMeiih, and the In
crease of these already granted, is exhibited
In bold relief by this attempt te include sero
eyes among the results of dlarrlieM,
Farris rises up te explain in a letter that
does net much benefit his case. lie sajs
he helped te elect Cleveland, which is te
his credit though it does net bear directly
upon the issue, and makes the veto all the
mera creditable and he lesents the " bru
tality" of the imputation that he lobbied
for his claim w hen, as he says, the bill was
net introduced at his solicitation, or even
with his personal knowledge or consent.
Te this extent only is an injustice appar
ently done him. lie evidently knew the
bill was pending and made no effort te step
it ; though he in no wise shows new any
relation between his sero eyes and his army
service. Indeed the discovery of chienic
diarrhrea, sixteen years after it was con
tracted, Farris being discharged in ISOe,
and his pension applied for in ISM, was in
itself a suspicious circumstance.
Farris had better sit down and keep
quiet.
A Considerate -Mngnump.
Mr. D. II. Chamberlain, native of
Maine, ex-carpet-bag governor of .Seuth
Carolina and for some years past u resident
of New Yerk city, is ene of the ablest and
most characteristic Mugwumps of the
country. Although an ill llaver of the le
construction politics of the Seuth ttill
.clings te him, he is, we believe, a man of
character and of geed repute. lie certainly
has well recognized ability, and in the last
presidential campaign he dealt seme tell-
ing blows at Blaine. He is out
new in a vigorous letter te the Xew
Yerk Timis in which he points
out with much clearness why President
Cleveland and presumably his heads of
departments and appointees te leading
places cannot reasonably be expected te
make ue discrimination between Democrats
and Republicans in appointments te elllce
even under a civil service reform regime.
With a fairness and considerateness that
his class nave net usually shown, Mr.
Chamberlain takes into account the cir.
cumstance that when the new administra
tion came in it found the civil service
packed with Republicans, and they nnd
their patrons claim the protection of the
new system simply te keep their places.
"VVitU much force Mr. Chamberlain writes :

ling with a plan te captivate the lupier
league that is intended te be as adroit and
is etas bare-faced as his scheme in the
state convention te stay the 1'rohibitieu
defection from his paity.
It seems that at the sessions of the liquor
league in Pittsbuig te-day, Monteoth, who
was a candidate before the convention for
lieutenant governor, is te deliver an ad'

was voted for in the convention for secre
tary of internal affairs, and is a saloon
keeper in Reading ; Harry K. Gnillln, sec
retary of the Republican state committee,
who is a saloon-keeper at l'ottstewn, and a
number of ether saloon and hotel-keepers
in Philadelphia are te figure as delegates
and use their intluence te persuade the
liquor men that the Prohibition plank was
a bait te lure the Temperance men and
means nothing serious te the disadvantage
of the liquor interests.
The circumstance that Oen. Beaver joined
the party at Tyreno and rode out with
them, drinking soda by the way, may have
been only a coincidence; it may have hap
pened by design.
This is net a geed tear for politicians
trying te ride two horses.
It being an admitted fact that ler every
one who Is the owner of a bicycle there are "0
ethers who would like te be, but whose
finances will net admit of the requisite out
lay, It is te supply this latter class and ethers
who de net care te have a machine of their
own, that ene el the principal bieycle manufac
turing companies is about te establish a sort
of blcycle livery in Pittsburg, a place w here
young men can hire, for a nominal price, a
machine of any kind, from tbe graceful racing
bicyi le te the substantial reidstnr tandem
The plan is In successful operation in heteral
et the larger cities of the country. This
scheme would meet n long tult want and
should be a shining success in every large
city.
Tim Republicans would gl mere than a
llttle for something te prohibit the l'rolubl l'relubl l'rolubl
tleulsts from voting for their own candidates
in this state.
It seems almost lucrodible that any sane
man who gets te Congress should make such
a preposition as this, from the recent speech
et Uel. ('. H. Grosvoner In Connecticut :
"Whenever a member et Congress pre
sents himself armed with a rortiuv.ite, let
that certificate show the number et votes
cast at the election in bis district en the day
when he claims te hate been elected. If
that certtllcate of votes shows a wide and un
explained discrepancy between the tutors et
the district and the votes cast, let the law et
Congress refuse that man his seat, and pro
hibit the clerk Irem placing his name en the
roll of Congress, and relegate the question of
representation back te the constituency of
ttie district.
This would put it into the potter et the
clerk et Congress te control the organiza
tion of Congress at almost nny tlnie upon
the lllmsiest of pretexts. It Is necessary te
estimate drosvenor as a feel te satehlm from
the suspicion of being a knat e.

1 r Is a rather curious coincidence that Phila

war was lu progress, McGrann, Rellly A Ce.

net se long thereafter the Cailetvhlll street

guiding hand et the late Cel. Win. M, Wiley,

Casper Hiller said the bay nnd grain crops
are as geed as any pret leuly hart e-ted. The
damage te wheat bv the se-called " army

crop is net yet very premising, but there Is a
geed ehance for a full cren : the apples fell

heavily.
Levi S. Reiststld thst though a very large
proportion of tbe npplcs had fallen oil, the

wonderful one, raplxrnes and iilackberries

Cper Hiller said in ('oncteca there were
no rainfalls heavy enough te make the water

I'ssays and communication, en motion et

A discussion ensued in which Messrs.

sectivorous birds came iu ter mere moderate
praise. The bobolink and cedar bird were
denounced a pestiferous.
The plant-louse was said te be tery nu

potato beetle was reerted as being were

Jeseph 1". Wltmer oiled atteutien te the
remarkable growth et a seedling walnut,
which was titteen inches In height when
planted, grew very little the first or second
