Cellins. Werd was sent te the mill and the
superintendent of tbe works notified Deputy
Corener M. W. Bmltu, of Ceney, who had
charge of tbe bodies, that the one with check
818 was J. Hart and bis companion was M.
Fogarty. Beth bad been paid In full for a
month's work en Monday.
WCRE DRINKING HEAVILY.
It appears that after the men received their
pay they began drinking very heavily. In
the evening these two with three ethers, all
of whom were under the influence ei liquor,
started from Cellins station te walk up the
towpath. About 8 o'clock a canal tieat
stepped at tbe lock at Cellins, and the driver
said that he had seen 11 ve men, who
were drunk, sitting near the edge et the
canal about two hundred yards above the
lock. At 10 o'clock another boatman re
ported that be seen the uien a liltle further
up the tow path, they asked him ler a knKe
which he did net nave. Seme time during

dy, brengbt three ei the men te tlie Cellins
telegraph tower. " The ineti were wry
drank and wet and the elllcers Raid they had
taken them from the canal where they leund
tbem floundering around. The nest morn
ing these three men disappeared, but it is
said that one of them has been seen slnce the
bodies were found. In reply te a question
concerning tbe matter he said: "We had
enough work te Bavoeurselves."
A THEORY OP THE ACCIDENT.
The men bad been talking en Monday of
leaving Yerk Haven and going In search or
work te some ether place. One of them spoke
of going ever te Elizabethteivn. The suppo
sition istbat they laid down along the tow
path te sleep, when ece or perhaps uiore lell
Inte the canal and the ethers went te
their assistance. Deputy Corener Smith
impannelled a Jury censlHtltm of Jacob M.
Hanlen, Benjamin Dunkel, V. 11. Abel,
Hbaefler Smith, Geerge T. Wiseman and
David Metzler, and an Inquest wm held.
The jury rendered a verdict et " death from
asphyxia, the bodies being found In the
canal at Cellins station with ue marke of vio
lence upon them." After the inquest the
bodies were lnterred at Cellins by the depu
ty coroner. Sunday morning a brother
of Fogerty, one et thp drowned men,
came te Cellins. The dead man was
taken up and the brother identified him. It
appears that Fogerty was about 33 years old
and unmarried. Ills home was in Consho Censho Conshe
hocken, Montgomery county, hut he was of
a roving disposition and preferred te ream
around the country rather than remain nt
home. Fogerty's body was taken te Coinuo Ceinuo Coinue
hockon for Interment this morning by hit

Suddenly Called.
Jacob N. Nell, an old farmer residing at In In
dlantewn, Maner township, foil dead irem
heart disease in a blacksmith shop in Mlllors Mlllers
ville, this morning about 7 o'clock.
It appears that thrldtau 'e(I, a son el the
old gentleman, had uiaile arrangements te
take his family en a vl it te lrieuds in Cum
berland county. They drove te Millersville
in one carriage, and the old gentleman and a
grandson in another, their puriKWO being te
take tbs two carriages home after Christian
Noir and his family had h tat toil for Cum
berland. Mr. Jacob Nell's wagon neeJing
snme repairs he took it te the sinithsben te
have them made, and while there was strick
en down by heart disease as above stated.
His sudden death caused great consternation.
Ills body was carried te the drug store et Dr.
Beeder, near by, and olferts nude te restere
life but without avail. The visit te Cumber
land was of course abandoned, and the whole
party returned nailly te the late residence of
tbe aged atrlarcb. Mr. Nell was ever 70
years of age. Fer several years iiast he has
been a sutlerer from heart dlsoase, and has
net been able te lie down In bed, but has
been obliged te sleep in a sitting posture.
Otherwise his health has been talrly geed.
He was a farmer during the actle years or
his life, and accumulated n competency by
tilling tbe soil ; but long ace iie relinquished
tbe farm te his beds and lived retired. He
was a member of the Mennonite church, and
was highly esteemed by his neighbors. He
leaves a wife and several children, all of
whom are married.

A Merchant Formerly Well-Knuwn and Dobij Debij

News has been received by his relatives
here of the recent death at his home In Jack Jack
eon county, Ind., or Mr. Henry L. Uliler,
brother et Mrs. Gee. W. Hensel, of Quarry
vllle, this county. Mr. Uhler vv us about eO
years of age. He was a son et the late .Levi
Uhler, deceased, et Mauheiui, and was him
self native of Lebanon county. When a
young man he removed with his father te
Man helm and thence went te Quarryvllle,
as an assistant In the htore et his brotlier-in-law,
Mr. Hensel. About tlie opening of the
war be engaged In business, in Columbia
with the late Gen. Themas Welsh, and for a
period they transacted a trade in groceries
and canal beating supplies. The partnership
was dissolved by Gen. Welsh's enlistment
in the Union service, and Mr. Uhler returned
te Quarryvllle and ler three years was In
partnership with Mr. Ilensel in the biminem
of general merchandise; he subsequently
was engaged for several years In the same
business In the village el White Herse, Sails
bury township. Frem there he removed te
the West, and with his brother und in an
individual enterprise did business in Shiloh.
.Later he sold his iuteresu there, lieughta
rann about 14 miles from Seymour, Ind., the
scat or Jacksen county, and has lately been
operating!!. He was married te Mies Careline
llarr, of HawkBVille, this county, and his
widow and several children survive him.
Mr. Uhlerhad a wide circle of acquaintances
in Lancaster county who remember him as a
genial, upright and intelligent man.
Deutb of Bin. Frank Deiuiiiet.
Mrs. Amelia Demmet, wife of Frank Dom Dem
met, baker at the cerner of Germau and
Sonth Queen streets, died at 2 o'clock Sun
day morning, after a week's Illness. Slie was
a daughter of Henry Draude, of Seuth Prince
street. Her husband and two children sur
vive. The funeral occurs Wednesday morn mern
lng at 8 o'clock.

The May adjourned quarter sessions court
was opened at 10 o'clock this morning, with
Judge Livingston presiding. There are en
the lint for trial 3S cases, or which
the following are the most Impertant:

Hayes, horse stealing and talae pretense;
llebert J. Evans, false pretense aud embez.

Hosteller, forgery. The latter case was con
tiuued, however, en motion of the defend
ant's counsel. A number of cases were called
but none were ready for trial this morning
and court adjourned until 2:30 o'clock.
T. Kdward VVllseu cntered a plea or guilty
of thrashing his wife. Sentence was de
ferred until Saturday.

Bryaea vs. Skeen and Doeraem A Rudy
against Garber.
Israel Cooper, of Ephrata township, was
granted a renewal of bis soldiers' license.

Sarah White, the mother or Mrs. Foil Feil

At the cemetery the rarriaen stepped

but escaped serious injury. Lucy Grier

landed sale en her feet. '1 he accident was
witnessed by n number of persons and the
unfortunate ladles at once were given as
sistance. Mrs. Feudersmltli had her
right arm broken in two places, between
the eltHiw and wrist. Her face was
also bruised and gashes cut en the right side
of her face. Mrs. White received ilnful
bruisca upon her head and rlcht shoulder.
Luckily her shawl was wrapped about her
head which protected her when she was
being draieed. The children had but slight
bruises. When the carriage was overturned
the liorsecommencx-d making desperate leaps
te Iree himself but had gene but a short dis
tance when he -was caught by Lphriam Till
man, a colored man. 'lhe animal was sub
dued with great ditllculty. Medical attend
ance was hastily summoned for the unfortu
nate ladies and they were cenveved te their
homes. This morning Ixith of the ladieewere
restlug quietly. The accident created great
excitement iu the cemetery, which was
crowded with people.

On Saturday Charles Kochew entered com
plaint at the ellice of hquire Frank against
Caleb Jenes colored, charging him with the
larceny et J40 from the warehouseerWilliam
Kochew, en Fifth street. Jenes and a com
panion natned Hiram Lloyd wereiu tlie place
and after their departure this sum of money
was missed from the safe. On Saturday
night Jenes was en a general drunk, was
arrested by Officer llarduele and had a hear
ing before Squire Frank. He denied the
theft and put the blame ou Lloyd. Jenes
said he had but four dollars in his o.s.scssieu,
but the etllcer has found places where he
spent about twenty dollars. Lloyd was dis
charged from custody and Jenes sent te (all
for ten days for drunken and disorderly con
duct, duriug which tlme the matter will be
investigated.
