Se Belated Pretests.
We are pleased te observe the substantial
nnanlmlnlty with which the leading news
papers of Pennsylvania pretest against the
proposed anti-oleemargarino legislation
pending in Congress. Without exception,
se far as we have noted, the principal
Journals of the state oppose it as vicious in
principle; and leading members of the
Heuse like Mr. Keliey and Mr. Morrison,
widely differing en some subjects of taxa
tion, are agreed upon this and have edified
the country with a discussion of it.
Te the most unreflectlve and shallow
congressional mind, it ought te readily oc
cur that te tax an article simply te sup-
pnHS it, is unconstitutional and improper ;
but we are glad te notice that many ether
members see further than this technical
view, and are opposed te the bill upon the
sound principle that a free government has
no right te suppress the manufacture, sale
and use of any article of feed except it be
essentially deleterious; certainly net be
cause It supplants or drives out some ether
article of feed. This Is the ground upon
which from the beginning the Intelm Intelm
ekkcuu has denounced and opposed
all such legislation in this state ;
and it has viewed its success with
apprehension because it involved such
a radically wrong 'principle. But the bill
passed our legislature and was signed by
the governor with scarcely another pretest
from the press of the state. It will be
found in the pamphlet laws of 18S5, in all
its enormity; falsely styled "an act for the
protection of the public health, and te pre
vent the adultcratian of dairy products and
fraud in the sale thereof." It is no such,
thing; it is a bill te prevent and punish "the
manufacture of any oleaginous substance
or any compound of the same, ether than
that produced from unadulterated milk or
cream from the same, any article designed
te take the place of butter;" without re
gard te the effect upon the public health or
adulteration. That law was declared con.
stitutienal by a lower court and is en its
trial before the supreme court. Why did
net the Pennsylvania newspapers speak out
when it was pending ?

Dr. Feter J. Roebuck, ex-state senator
and candidate for Congress, publishes a
card ia the columns of the JVu Era in
which he says : .
I specifically deny Having bargained for
money or any ether consideration te deliver
the vote of my election district, (Warwick
township,) for any candidate or combination
or candidate at the recent or any former pri
mary election, as alleged In the Philadelphia
Times el yesterday.
1 further deny ever having received any
money from any source whatever te Influ
ence my political action. '
Weeks before the recent primary election
I publicly declared myself In favor or the
nomination of Suremy and Weaver, and at

inactivity.
I pronounce these reports false in every
particular, and fabrication Invented te de
stroy my reputation and injure me publicly,
and challenge my accusers te produce any
evidence te sustain their statements.
When Dr. lteebuck wrote and published
this card he knew he said what wa3 net
tiue.
Te the writer of this present article Dr.
Roebuck distinctly admitted en last Tues
day evening, and he expressly desired it te
be published in what he thought te be
"justice " te himself, that while he had be
fore the recent primary election declared
himself for Summy and Weaver, he was
ready te reconsider that and for ten days
bargained te de se, In consideration of the
friend of Stehman supporting him for
Congress two years hence. lie related
circumstantially all the details of
this proposed bargain ; he boasted
that it involved the casting of his intluence
and the transfer of the vote of his town
ship from Summy te Stehman ; and he
explained minutely that it only failed be
cause he could net get the ether parties te
the contract te set fertli Its terms in writ
ing and subscribe te the same.
lie furnished this explanation te account
for the vote of Warwick, and te relieve
himself of the current suspicion that his
motive was the 12,000 lie had received from
Bummy'd friends; that money, he wanted
lk. understood, he had as stakeholder te be
paid te another In a certain event ; he fur
nished none of It and he get none.
If ex-Senater Roebuck has dene what
we charge he frankly admitted having
done, he has been guilty of a misdemeanor
under the law of 18S1 ; if lie has net done
it,behlmsslt U responsible for the publi
cation of the fact; and he has in any event
an easy way te test the strength of the ac
cusation. The courts are open te him te

The votes that were taken en some prepos

ridicule was net by Mr. Hatch, with the
pelat of order that the amendment was
neVgermane, whereupon .Mr. Reagan an
nounced that the bill was either a fraud or
a revenue bill, and that, It it were the lat
ter, his amendment was perfectly germane,
but the chairman sustained Hatch.
Mr. Flndlay, of Maryland, added te the
amusement by bringing forward an anictid
raent Imposing a tax of $1,000 en manufac
turers of glas3-eggs. This amendment the
chairman ruled out without mercy. Then
Adams, of New Yerk, caught the eje of

That nil manufacturers of incubators shall
pay a tax of $10,000, and en every chicken
hatched by artificial means there shall be
Imposed a tnx of i2 for roosters nnd 41 for

Despite the web of absurdity in which
this measure is wrapped, its advocates

Catherine Deml, the Fat Wemsn Kttrserill
nary iirtalU of the Funeral
The burial et Catherine Devvd, the
enormously lat woman, Wednesday was a
gigantic task for Undertaker Themas O'Oara,
of New Yerk. She weighed when living
nearly four hundred pounds. She dropped
dead en Tuesday morning, the cause being
latly degeneration et the heart. Catherine
lived with a nephew In poorly furnished
looms ever a lager beer saloon at Ne. lit
Eighth aveuue. When Mr. O'Garn arrived
and looked upon the mountain elfiesh upon
the fleer he exclaimed. " My Ged ' what can
1 de w lth such a body ?"
The undertaker went te enenf the largest
factories and ordered ene et the largest
coffins. In the meantime he sent oue or his
largest iceboxes, an old-tashlened cencern,
similar te a receiving vault, iu which te
place the body. Vnder the corpse was
placed eight inches of Ice, nnd ever it almost
as large a iuantlty. Even the face was
covered with ice. Mr. O'Oara's purpose In
putting se much Ice around this huge mass
of tlesh was te freeze the body, as In subse
quently removing it he anticipated an accl
dent. AbwIU be seen, his anticipations were
correct.
It was nil solid flesh, and the undertaker,
who bes had twenty.five years' experience,
said be had never seen anything like it- Oue
of the legs, Mr. O'Oara said, was as thick
around as the body el an ordinary man. Ills
assistants at first thought the corpse was
puffed up with air, and they punctured It In
several places only te find that the tlesh was,
us has been said, quite solid and could net be
redticed.
When the cellln arrived yesterday morning
It looked like one of these huge dry goods
packing ceses get up iu funeral style. It
was a little ever six feet long and was seven
feet lx Inches around. The strongest hearse
was brought Inte use.
When the ice was removed the body was
found solidly frozen. Then it was discovered
that it could net beget in the casket with the
customary grave clothes, some women
were directed te remeve the-ie clothes and
wrap a sheet around the corpse. The task
was an awful laborious one. At last the
sheet wa get arunn-l, and then seven strong
men lifted the corpse. As ir it were but a
plece of tissue paper the thickly woven sheet
tore away from the grasp of the men and the
corpse fell en tbe fioer. There was a little cry
of horror from the re w women present, but
without causa New was seen the wisdom
et thoroughly freezing tbe body. It struck
the lloer like a leg of weed, and net a particle
of the llesh seemed te be injured.
The remnants el the sheet and another
w ere cut Inte strips ann tripled, and by this
means the body was ntieu into tne cemn
Then it was seen that several Inches steed up
abeve the sides. The undertaker and his as
sistants, however, placed the lid ever the
corpseandby steadily pressing en It man
aged te compress the body sufficiently te
close the lid, which was seeurely fastened by
large screwB two and a half inches long.
A Btreng plank was placed en the stairs
ever which te slide the cellln. Knur men
w ( re stationed at the feet te guide Its dew n
ward course. A repe was put around the
casketand ether men at the head firmly
held the ends and gently lowered the celli u,
while the four men pressed upward te re
lelve the strain. In the hallway halfa dozen
big, strapping truckmen lifted the coffin and
carried it te the hearse. Fully two thousand
persons were in the stroet.
Tliere w ere nlne coaches tnrarry the friends

an im in en me pit, rather than a grave, was
