fund for J56.25. A number of bills were or
dered te be paid after which the beard ad
journed te meet Tuesday evening, June 1st.
Police New.
During yesterday Plerce Bingham, a lxmt
man en the Pennsylvania canal, was In the
saloon of C C. Scbure, corner et Frent and
Bridge streets, and after n short time created
a considerable disturbance. By the use et a
billiard cue the man had everything his own
way for some time, and put every person out
of the saloon. Complaint was entered against
him at the office of 'Squire Evans, for surety
of the peace, for threatening te kill one et the
persons present, lie was arresieu anu given
a hearing yesterday afternoon. He was
Slaced under ball for his geed behavior, aud
ad te pay the costs of the suit.
Officer Uardnele arrested Pierce Bingham
atter the ether suit was concluded, en the
charge of committing au assault aud battery
en Jehn Keuman, a canal boatman. He was
flven a hearing at the olllce or Squlre
'rank, and was discharged upon the pay
ment of costs.
Fine Specimen et Workmanship.
A dining room car for use en the Chicago,
Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad arrived in
Columbia yesterday, from the Harlan it Hoi Hei Hoi
llngsweith car shops, Wilmington, Del., en
its way te its destination. Tiie car is 05 feet
In length nnd 10 feet 5 inches In width, aud
could net be run through the tunnel above
Columbia. This car is the finest specimen
of workmanship ever seen in town has
been greatly admired by a number
of persons. One end of the car is devoted te
the kitchen purposes and is couiplete in
every detail; next te the kitchen Is the buf
fet, and this portion el the car is fitted up in
fine style. The dining-room contains ten
tables, flve en each side, capable of seating
four persons each. The car Is handsomely
finished in bard weed, and by the use of lam
brequins and jilate glass mirrors the car has
been put In Hue order. By the use el thli
car borne comforts can be secured while trav

The Salvation Army of town paraded
through our streets lest night singing their
peculiar songs and nlavlnii of tambourine.
A very large number of people followed the
members in their march through town, re
garding them us a great curiosity.
Company fi. lelt town this morning at

road for Wilkesbarre, where they will par
ticipate in the celebration held by the Ninth
regiment.
About 300 shad were caught vesterday and
last night at the tiaberlei at Columbia, which
were of geed size and found ready pur
chasers. Air. and Mrs. S. R. Clepper celebrated
their seventeenth anniversary of their wed
ding at their home en Locust street. The
large number of friends present spent the
evening In a pleasant manner.
The Pennsylvania canal is new being
cleaned by the mud digging machine. The
refuse matter is being hauled into the rier
below the bridge.
Wash Null was driving a borne and
wagon yesterday atteruoen, across the river
tracks, when the hbalM breke down and
the contents of the wagon had te be un un
eoaded. A very enjeyable progressive euchrn
party was held last night by Misses Parry at
the residence el Mr. K. K. Smith.
A well-known farmer living near Colum
bia, bad been in the practice of riding en the
Heading & Columbia passenger trains a ab
out paying his fare. He was arrested by
Officer Het! man and was compelled te iwv
costs ela suit.

Archbishop Ryan addressed the Catho Cathe
lio Yeung Men's National union at
the Academy of Music, Philadelphia,
en Thursday: "As Catholics, we have
nothing te de with politics itself,"
he said, " but with the ethics of politics. It
is net essential that political representatives
should be Catholics, but it is necessary that
men filling publie offices should be men or
eoed principle, et whatever lalth." These
officers were cbestm : President, Hev. Jes.
H. Median, of Elizabeth, N. J.; vice presi
dents, Rev. J. P. Mullen, el I'hiladelphia,
and Jehn P. Leauhy, of Bosten ; secretary,
Themas H. Byrnes, of New Yerk. It was
decided te held the next convention in New New
Yerk, the time te be fixed hereafter.
Charles A. Lageu. of the bar of Philadel
phia, well-known in this city, was intro
duced, lie said: "1 see no reason because
a meu is a Catholic he should fail te be au
American citizen in its host and broadest
sense. The Catholic laity should take mere
Interest in publie affairs. It was a difficult
thing te move the proper class of Catholics in
Philadelphia te take the lead In publie mat
ter. What Catholic In the commonwealth is
net ashamed of the divorce laws of the state T
Twe years age the governor had pointed out
their glaring defects and yet what Catholics
have met te upheld and strengthen the

Mr. Lagen then severely criticised the ap
pointments of alleged Catholics in many
beards lu the municipal government aud said
that in many questions outside of mere rolig relig rolig

te help along the Catholics in some needed
reform. He believed, in considerable associa
tion with Protestants.

Baltimere county, Md., died there ou Thurs
day. Mrs. Cellins was the wlfe of Thomai
Cellins, a well-known railroad contractor,
the daughter of the late Jehn aud S.trah Mur
ray, et Harrisburg, sister of the late Colonel
WHllaui Murray and of Mrs. Jane M. Keeu
an, or Harrisburg, formerly of l-uncaster.
The deceased had a large circle of friends in
Lancaster ami Harrisburg. Her funeral Likes

Kalblus, sr., a native of Germauv. Mr.
Kalbfus, a grandson of the founder, tiled in

Atkinson. A year age last February Mr.
