The gubernatlenal canvass In Georgia, from
being a still hunt betneen Majer A. O. Bacen
and Judge T. J. Simmons, has developed
into au olil-tinie appeal from the stump, with
Gen. Gorden and Bacen as the principal!'.
Simmons saw the coming trlbulatleu aud
returned te the bench, where he is new busy
reading charges te grand juries. Gorden's
entrance into the arena was made undercover
or the Jell Davis demonstration, which was
an excellent time in which te jog up
the old Confederates. Majer ll.toeu'.s
friends objected te this appeal te the war,
whereupon the Gorden people asserted t. at
well he might, slnce he resigned the adjut
ancy of the Ninth regiment In 1STJ, aud
went nreund the state collecting tax in kind.
The Bacen people retorted that Gorden's
resignation trem the United States Senate
was suspicious. The first stump meeting
between the candidate was in Kateutnn,
where Bacen get Inte a wrangle with the
chairman, but subsequently get hack te ids
subject and denounced the sUtumeut that
either in peace or war he bad resigned u
public trust w hich he was physically able te
lulfill. "And let lihn cotue who dare te
deny it," said he yesterday.
The candidates met Iu Sparta, where Gen.
Gorden said : " I put the gentlemauen notice
from, this hour that I shall strike back fur
every Insinuation against my character. I
mean te handle him with glee-s oil, and
carry the war Inte Africa. Majer Bacen has
spoken el my resignation. I will de se, tee.
Somebody resigned In 12, but it was net
me. That was a geed time te resign. These
times were enough te make a man sick and
want te go home. It was prudent te resign
then. It he had net resigned he might net
h.tve been here te run for governor new. He
is a friend or mine, indeed. He says he has
been se for thirty years, and yet, whlle saying
he will net linpnUi improper motives tome,
he lias for the past hour tried te blacken my
character."
This brought out the declaration from
Majer Bacen that whatever Irieudship there
might have been between them, it was new
ended. He had no friendship Ter such a man.
The debate was full or mutual mud Hinging,
and was greatly enjoyed by the people. Gor Ger Gor
