After an Idleness ei one week the Susque
hanna rolling tnill started te work this morn morn
leg with their uaual number of workmen.
The mill WW closed for rejalrs. The guide
and bar mill rella bave been put in geed
erderand a new engine bed has been built.
This mill la an Important Industry te Colum Celum
bia, and Its ateady running adds greatly te
the financial prosperity et tbe town. The
mill htm been at work through all the panics.
The Keeley stove works hnve been idle for
the past week for repairs, but started te work
this morning.

A committee of three members of the For Fer
est and Stream club or Columbia, left en last
Saturday afternoon en a tour of Inspection In
Vlrglnsvllle, Berks county, In which locality
the club Intends te select a place for camping
purposes during July. The comuiittee re
turned home ttels morning and were very
much pleased with what tbey saw.

will bold their annual stockholders' meeting
In the council chamber.
Last Saturday evening a white and a col
ored man indulged in a wordy altercation en
Locust street, drawing a large crowd.
Heward Purple returned te Keadlugthis
morning, after a visit of one week lu Colum
bia. The herse of a man named Hogentogler
while being driven ever Fourth street last
Saturday evening, started te run oil". After
running a short distance the animal was cap
tured. The regular monthly meeting or council

Jehn M. Barry, one or this city's best
known railroad contractors, died shortly
alter 10 o'clock Sunday morning at his resi
dence, Ne. 215 East Orange street, from
pneumonia that was contracted en Tuesday
night last. Prier te that he had enjoyed ex
cellent health, but en the evening mentioned
he was BOlzed en the Btreet with a violent
chill, took bis bed, grew steadily worse and
died while the church bells were summon
ing the people te worship.
Jehn M. Barry wastbu eldest seu of the
late Michael Barry, of this city, ene of the
most prominent railroad contractors In the
Btate, and was born in the county of Lim
erick in Ireland a little uiore than lUty years
age. When a lad of tender years he came
with his parents te this town where he has,
with only brief Intervals of abseuce, lled
ever since. He was educated at ML St.
Mary's college, Kmmltlsburg, Md,, and bis
first business venture was with his father
lu the building of tbe Maliuuey
tunnel In Schuylkill county. Thence liewent
en the Western Maryland railroad, having a
contract for a jwrtlen c f j's coubtructlen. He
was next associated with Geerge K. Heed and
Themas Baumgardnerln the building of the
Junction read from Breakwater te Lewes,
Delaware, through the peach-growing dis
trict of that state. This read was alter wards

Following this no helped te build tbe orig
inal Shenandoah Valley railroad, and was
also engaged a towyearsage in contract werK
for the Shenaudeah company under Its new
management. The ethor contracts with which
he was mere recently connected were with
the Delaware & Bound Broek, Pittsburg .t
Lake Erie and the Seuth Penusylauia com
panies, continuing with the latter until the
work was Btenped.
The deceased was a warm-hearted gentle
man, whose genial manners gained ler hiin
a widoclrcleof friends who will grlee sin
cerely e or his untimely demise. A loving
husband and most indulgent father, he
will be sorely missed by the widow and three
children, two daughters und a son, who sur
vive him. The doceased also leaves a brother
Michael Barry, a Wilmington, Del., con
tractor, and a sister, Mrs. Ttiemas Brady, el
Bergen Point, H J.
The luneral will take place from his late
residence en Wednesday morning at 8:30
o'clock; requiem mass at St Mary's Catbolie
church at 'J o'clock, and Interment at St.
Mary's cemetery.
Death of Mr. Iteury Mrubel.
Mrs. Ilenry Strobel died at 11 o'clock this
morning at the residence of her son-in-law,
Jehn niemenz, Ne, 335 East Orange street,
of Bngbt's disease, accompanied by heart
complications. The deceased was 68 years of
age and bad been In lit health for the past
tive years at varying Intervals. She was
born in Crenstadt, Wurtemberg, and early
came te this country. It is a notable coinci
dence that Jive years age te-day she and her
husband Bailed en an extensive European
tour, when both visited the places of tlielr
nativity. The deceased was an energetic
woman who did much te build up her hus
band's ain pie tertune. She leases besides
her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Jehn
Hlemenz, and Mrs. W0. Fralley, a brother,
Charles llapp, and u sister, MrH. Metir, all
residents of tills city. She was a devout
member efSt. Antheny's Catbolie church.

The runeral of Mrs. Susan Slayumker took
place from the residence of her son, Henry E,
Slaymaker, this morning at 11 o'clock. Only
tbe relatives el the deceased wero present
The body was encased lu a cedar casket
covered with black cloth. There was no
hearse, no flowers, nor any of the usual trai
plngs of a funeral. At 11 o'clock the olllcia elllcia
ting priest, Rev.Dr.Kulght, and his assistant,
ltev. Hardy, arrayed In their priestly gur
mentB, arrived at tbe house. A tew minutes
later the carriers, Policemen Geerge Cramer,
C. J. Stermteltz, Andrew Eicholtz, and Ex
Policeman Charles Helmau, carried the celli u
from the house and placed It ujieii a baud
bler and carried It te St James church, pre
ceded by the clergymen aud followed by the
mourners.
Arrived at the church, which was already
well tilled with sympathizing lrlends, the
casket was placed In lrent of the chancel.
Kev. Dr. Knight and Kev. Hardy read the
Protestant Episcopal burial service after
which the remains of Mrs. Slay maker -were
taken Inte the churchyard adjoining, and

Jacob Baecber, of West Lampeter town
ship, made narrow escape from death en
Saturday. He was gunning, and with the
first discbarge of the gun the barrel burst
Mr. Beeeber'a arm was burned, and that is
about all the injury hesustalned. Tbe barrel
was thrown pt him-very close te his head.

Mr. Lurentz endeavored te check tlie horse's
