of the authorities constituted by law for the
government and supervision of said prison,

Appointed Constable.
Columbus Kete, "who was elected consta
ble of Lancaster township in February tiled
his resignation. Samuel C. Shaub, who was
the constable of the district last year, was ap
pointed te 1111 the vacancy, his petition ter
the appointment having been signed by a
large number of the citizens el the town
ship. The Licenses Considered.
Jehn A. Snyder, who enjoys a restaurant
llrense, petitioned for a tavern license. Ills
counsel stated that Mr. Snyder has always
kept a geed place and that the accommoda
tions for a first-class hotel are geed.
Geerge II. Miller prayed for a hotel license.
ills counsel stated that of the 72 licenses
granted in the city, there are only live places
where a meal can boprecurod at any hour,
and of these live, four enjoy hotel licence,
and te be consistent the court should grant
the license prayed for. Mr. Miller, it Mas
stated, had all the accommodations for a
hotel.
Barbara Horreg asked for a hotel liconse
ler her house, located at thocernerof Walnut
and Mulberry streets. Mrs. Her70g was
granted a liceuse at tbe January term of court
but through negligence she did net call for
the license until a day tee late. The court
granted tbe license.
Aleise Bube, of Mt Jey borough, and
Jehn A. Getz, of Akren, applied ler hetel
licenses, but the hearings were continued te
give the parties time te take testimony te
show the necessity for the granting of the
licenses.
William Sweigart, of Slackwater, Cones Cenes
toga township, desired a hotel license. The
house was licensed until two years age, when
tbe owner of the property, Jehn A. hheber,
allowed it te lapse for purseual reasons. Li
cense was new iesired, because the parer
mill will be started this month, and hotel ac
commodations will be required for the work
men and these having Lmslness at tbe mil).
Z. Uuderceller, of Uphrata township, de
sired a hotel license ter an old stand, but there
was a remonstrance Hied against tbe grant
ing. The hearing was continued te allow
the parties time te take testimony.
Henry G. Shirk desired a 1 Icen he for a hotel
in West Hempfield township. It is the old
Klugh tAVernand vas a llceused house for
32yeir. A rouienstranco signed by 29 men
and 38 women was tiled against the granting
of the license, en the ground that the hotel
was net noeoseary for the accommodation of
the public, there being a number of hotels
within a short distance of the house for which
llconse was asked and that the house in the
past has been an anneyance and a nuisance.
Rev. 11. B. Dehner, a iwster formerly liv
ing at Iren vllle, tiled a remonstrance against
the granting of the hotel license of Jotin 12.
Irwiu, at Cerdelia. There was no testimony
submitted te the court, the only paper en
tile being a letter from Kev. Dehner, sent te
the court, that the hotel was net necessary
and was demoralizing te the neighborhood.
Isaac If. Hess petitioned for a hotel license
at Mlllersville. The house was kept last
. ear and he was an applicant for the license
again, but a romenstrancu was Hied en ac
count of Ilerr violating the liquor law, and
llerr withdrew his application and a new
one was tiled by Hess, the son-in-law el
Ilerr. A remonstrance was also hied against
Hess, the signers alleging that lfa llcense is
granted te Hess the hotel will be kept under
the direction efKather-in.law Herr.
Henry Whiteslde liled an application for
license fera hetel, in the new building re
cently erected at the Gap. The court decided
te hear all the applications for license or
hotels In that village at the same time, in
order te ascertain the necessity for three
hotels in tbe Ullage. The ether hotel-keepors
In the village are Ilrisbin Skiles and M. I.
Llnville. Whiteside's llcense vvasasketl for
en the ground that a first-class hotel is neces
sary at the Gap, ror.Sklles and I.iuville It
was stated they enjoyed licenses last year
and their houses were necessary for the ac
commodation of the public

rletta, was transferred te the Jeseph W.
Larcelere.
The petition et a large number or citizens
for the opening or Shlppen Mreet, from Mid Mid
dle street te Its terminus at Oreen street,
was presented. The damages have all been
assessed. The court took the petition and
reserved decision.
An appeal from the award of vlewers fa or er
ing the opening or Grant street from Chris
tian te Xerth Queen street, and assessing
damages therefer was filed te-day. It Is
signed by all the county commissioners.
Thee. Kllngler, Klghtti ward, city, was
granted a soldler'a license te peddle goods In
the county or Lancaster.

the sanity or Jeseph J. Desch, held another
session en Friday afternoon. The first wit
ness examined was Dr. Geerge It. Itohier,
and he testified that Desch Is new suffering

te prison ; don't remember that he
noticed Desch belug out et hla head
or Buttering from any hallucination since. the
(ith of March. The doctor repeated several
conversations he had with Desch, and con
eluded his testimony by stating that he
would net swear Desch was sane because he
considered bint te benuilerlng from chronle
alcoholism.
Night Watchman Weaver testified Desch Is
very noisy aome nights ; be screams, hallees
and walks bis cell, Is continually talking, as
It .holding conversation with persons; ids
sentences were disconnected and there Is no
sense In his talk, Judging his conversations
and conduct, wltnem was of opinion that
Desch was net or sound mind.
Night Watchman Dague testified that front
what he saw of Desch he was el oplnleu that
be didn't act like a senslble man.
The commission held another meeting this

afternoon, and the pregramme consisted et

anxiously expected by the farmers and It

heavy rain-fall it will net likely be great.

sutlerers, their jards having leu washed
and bricks damaged. The earth has caed
in for seme distance along tbe sides of the
large trench en East Orange street but the

In some places the gre-vlug wheat has been
flattened out In the ueids Ly the heavy rain,

charges against him.
Christian Qunde, who was charged by Con

peared belere Alderman Deen and entered
ball for a hearing. Mr. Quade sa s he knew
nothing of the complaint made against him
until b,e saw it in thenewspapers, and that he
