The newspapers are having their silly sen sen sen about Mr. Arthur. That lie is a very sick man there are signs. That lie has a Tery sensible attending physician, en oue point at least, is sure. This geed doctor obstinately refuses te issue bulletins nbeut himself, with some references te his dis tinguished patient, as the Giant and Gar field doctors did, se profusely ; and new the correspondents have begun te abuse the doctor, te lie about Arthur and te la ment ever the country. The physician is doing a great public wrong, we are told, in keeping back from Blxty millions of tearful and affectionate people exact details of iheir late chief's condition; and in withholding from him their many tokens of touching sympathy and profound solicitude. It will strike decent-minded and considerate people that the physician is doing just the right tiling. The public have no claim whatever te a knowledge of Mr. Arthur's condition. He Is a private citizen, entitled te all the pro tection of hl3 position : no nublic interest depends en his illness or recovery, and his physician and his family are the sole proper Judges of what is te be given out about his condition. His doctor is a model of de pertment, te be held up for the frequent imitation of his profession and the instruc tion of the newspapers and the public gen erally. That Mr. Arthur is sick is enough for the public te knew; he may have one disease or another ; he may be better or worse ; and te his bodily Ills he may add some melancholy of mind ; that is vaguely hinted ; it is net unlikely. He is probably a disappointed man. He had the reputa tion of being a geed liver ; that experience generally brings its own physical penalty. It is a mere vulgar curiosity tee often pandered te by newspapers that knew better and should de better which in trudes into people's chambers, inquires about and makes known all their private affairs. And, at the same time, the fashion spreads berausn a great many equally vulgar-minded people want their affairs thrust befere the public gaze; it is hard for the newspapers te resist sorae of them. It is net te be forgotten that Mr. Arthur came te most trying times and circum stances in his accession te the presidency ; ana uore uimseic with dignity through them all. The suggestion, made in some quarters, that in his illness, his disappeinjment, his alleged want of means te maintain his po sition, and ether reported characteristics of his situation, he i9 an example of the in gratitude of republics or of the necessity for making some new previsions for our ex-presidents this suggestion is also ret, pure and simple. Our ex-presidents need no such care. Men fit for the presidency need no prevision of the law te furnish them proper retirement ; men unworthy of the place should have no air cushion te break their fall. It pays enough for any Ameri- can citizen te retire with snillcient means te live in all the dignity that at tends them in private station ; and any body ought te be willing and satisfied te " have been " a president of the United States. The discussion nbeut what the public ought te de with them is silly and profitless. Let them de for themselves. Let them alone. Ufe-Sarleg Precautions'. It has been said that for every new luxuiy in life that man obtains, there comes a corresponding danger, liefore the days of " all the modern conveniences" in ths houses, typhoid fever and kindred eMseascs could net obtain such a firm grip. In the times when weed was the chief fuel, there was no record of scores of men flnd intt graves at the feet of coal mines, such as was witnessed in theXanticeke disaster; and se of nearly every occupation, in creased energy bringing in its train in. creased mortality. This thought of the penalty that luxu ries carry with them recurs with fresh force in an accident reported frpm Pitts burg.
