A lady from Caltlernla, traveling through
the Eastern states, was present, a few months
age, at a state dinner in Washington, at
which the wife and daughter ei the secreUry
or state occupied the hlghest positions next
te the sister of the president The table was
decorated with pink roses, thedraperles wero
pink, the ladles wero gowns the color et the

Shoreturned te Washington In six weeks
and was Invited te another dinner. Mr.
Bayard's wife and daughter both weie dead,
and had been laid te rest In the old church
yard at Wilmington. The ether gueits w ero
the same. The roses were red, the gowns of
the ladles crimson ; but that was the only
change. There were the same Joyous faces,
the same Jesting, the same laughter.
The stranger remombered Kip Van Win
kle's sad cry when he returns te his native
village and finds his place tilled :

One of the most pathetic of French ballads
Is the song of Constance as she gavly d rcsses
herself ter the ball at the French ambas
sador's where she Is te meet her lever and
friends, and te be the queen of the revels.
Her light dress is blown against the iiame el
a lamp, and she dies belore the hour when
she was te go. The news reaches her com
panions at the ball.
" They cry, Peer Constance ' and they
dan co until morning."
Onoet the most tragic lncldents In Long
fellow's poems Is the coming back et the
ghosts te their old home te find that thore Is
no longer room for them at the table or the
neartu.
There Is hardly a subject en which young
and imaginative people expend mero melan
choly reflection than this, et the brief mem
ory which will fellow them when they are
gene ; and with less reason. They need be
forgotten. In gay, fashionable society, where
the sole aud avowed object Is amusement It
is natural that one who, being dead, can no
longer amuse, should be thrust promptly out
of sight
But the real world should net be Judged
by this raise and factitious stage scenery. I ts
actual life, the man or woman who is eameat
in thought and action will be remombered
and exert a powerful intluence for geed or
evil long after death. The slncere man,
whether tie be the leader of a nation or a vil
lage, strikes a sledge-hammer blew In the
world which echoes through many genera
tions. The memory of a loving, pious woman,
whether she be Madame Guy en or a name
less pauper In the almshouse, will linger
long iu ether lives, like spilled perlume,
making the world pleasanter and dearer as it
rises heavenward.
