the term Mr. I'ewderly resumed his Htudies

at the head of the Knlghuinl Laber. Housed

he was made the bead or the labor organiza

IX POLITICS.
l'ollewlug the riots the labor organization
nominated a full county tlcket at the fall
election. Mr. I'owderly was made a mem
ber or the county committee. People en
deavored te rldlcule them out of the contest,
hut the ticket was elected by a large major
ity. The following fprlng Mr. I'ewderly
was nominated by the l.almr party ler mayor
of Scranton and he was elected. The Repub
lican press charged I'ewderly with being the
candldatoer the Melly Magulrea, and pre
dicted, in thoevontof his election, that the
city would be turned ever te that lawless
gang of rulllans, but it onlvaervod toareuso
thOHympathy of the people in hla behalf.
The poeplo of Carbondale indorsed him
strongly. Mr. I'ewderly made a most excel-
lent ami conservative mayor, two years
later, when he was again nominated by the
I.ater party for mayor, his predecessor, Mc
Kune, came all the way from Canada te take
h hand in working for his election, and the
next tlme alter that tlie Democrats indorsed
his nomination. He could have been elected
ugaln, but he declined.
Mr. I'owderly Is new entering en his
seventh year as general master workman of
the Knights of Laber. Mr. Stephens died in
1879, and Mr. I'ewderly, who held the posl pesl posl
tlen next In pewer, that or general worthy
foreman becatne Ills successor. During his
terms of oftlce the Knights or lber have
grown from a comparatively InHignlllcant
gathering Inte an organization of the gi cutest
power and Importance, with a mombershlp
reachlng far up In the neighborhood of the
millions.
Mr. I'ewderly 'm mother died about ten
years age. Heme Idea of the slze and extent
of the family can be learned from the fact
thatalxty children and grand-children were
gathered nt her funeral. Mr. I'ewderly,
however, has no children. Ills father died
during his first term as mayor. Met or the
Scranton city eIllclalH went te Carbondale te

A Few Facts,
Housekeepers in selecting wares Ter
your tables, etc., especially these just
buying new outfits, it is important that,
you select the best in tlie market. Hew
embarrassing te a lady, especially if slie
has table pride, and what lady should
net have, te find that her ware is all
full of small cracks, and that grease
has penetrated and made it leek black
and ugly.
A cause and a remedy. Allseml Allseml
percelalu or granite ware in its biscuit
state is porous. It i3 then covered witli
natural or artificial glass te prevent its
penetration by liquids. This i3 termed
glazing. The glaze mast vary as it
must fuse or melt according te the
ware upon which it is placed.
It must also dilate orcentractin pro pre
portion te the biscuit or else it will
crack or cra7e and produce the above
result.
Unequal or insutnclentllringorburn insutnclentllringerburn

the Bame results.
Yeu may, and will no doubt ask,
" Hew then can you tell whether you
are getting a geed aiticleV" Simply
and only by buying these makes which
experience has taught dealers te recom
