"Whilst I draw this fleeting breath.

But the Methodists sing the Inst line :

A. CRITIC wne WAS CAUtlHT.
In illustration of bis text Mr. Robinson tells
an apt story et Mrs. Sarah K.Adams' famous
hymn, taken from the acutual proceedings
In the een oral assembly of the Presbvterian
church. In the course ei debate, one of the
members took occasion te comment en a
Terse et the hymn beginning, "Nearer, my
Ged, te Thee." He becamesodrell thet loud
shouts rang out in the serene air which that
calm and dignified body generally breathes ;
"'Jake the platform I take the platform I" He
the bright brother steed, a master-critic con
fessed, before the gathered sobriety of the
land. And new he tore things te pieces
"Loek at this perversion I instead or an ex
quisite image, 'Though like a wanderer,
daylight all gene,' we have this absurdity,
Though, like a wanderer, the sun gene

the sun, or the author, or was it perhaps
Jacob? i Laughter notes the reporter.
Where had this wanderer gene down te?
Did the sun particularly like that wan

tin church and the ages, 'Daylight all

Ten feet away ireni tbe smart speaker sat
one of the eldest liymnolegUts n the land,
looking ever at him with an expression or
amusement and perhaps wonder, as he saw
blm, like a beetle, sticking himself en a pin
without the help of a naturalist. Fer he
knew that wbatsuch peeplecriticise is almost
inevitably the trun reading, and what is off

means that they would have altered the lines
if they had had the chance. It was net at all

hymn, the line steed, "The sun gene down,"
and that was what the platform orator was
making such fun of.
IN A LANCASTER PULPIT.
This subject of hymn-tinkering was re
called by an incident in the Presbyterian
pulpit of Lancaster en Sunday morning.
Brether Mitchell, of that church, hed ex
changed with Brether Stall, or St. Jehn's
Lutheran, for the occasion. After Brether
Stall bad read and expounded the scriptures
he started te read the geed old hymn that
all the books have and is everywhere known
as "Coronation." Ne minister of experi
ence, we assume, pretends te raf closely the
text of this sacred song. Nearlv every
church member is .familiar with the lines
and Brether Stall scarcely looked at his
book as he read with the'hjmnal open at
"All nail the powers of Jesus' name.
Let angels prostrate fall ;
Brine ieith the royal diadem
And crown blm-Lerd of nil.
And then he started in with the second
stanza :
"Ye chosen eccd of Israel's, race.
A remnant
And then, after having tripped a little In
the first Hue, he stepped Bhert, recovered
himself and proceeded :
" Ye ransomed from the tall I
Hallhlm who saves you by his grace

" VW1 A1J11 X.U1 U VI i
And then, with emphasis and feeling, he
Mid : ' May the Lord have mercy en these
bymm raengerers, who are altering the text.
I suppose your book Is as bad as ours, preb.
ably no worse, I wish they would let them
alone ; and stick te the originals."
Quite naturally, the Incident attracted no ne
tlce ; net only te the lines of the hymn in in
velved, but of many ethers, or which vari
ous versions are extant; and it is easily
found that a great diversity or opinion ex
ists as te what is the correct rendering et
familiar hymns, as well as te what It ought
te be. Inquiry among Methodists, Luther
ana, Presbyterians ana members or ether do de
nominations in this citydlsclesedthefact that
without consultation or their hymn books
they dlQered very broadly in their recollec
tion of the literal text; aud, strange te say
the recollection or many of them difiered

though it tallied with ethers. Ter Instance
it is found upon examination that the oriel-

And yet It Is seen that the line which
proved a stumbling block te Brether Stall is
really in the original : and It was the " mon

Had we the time and space, nliuest
innumerable Illustrations might be Riven of
radical, often meaningless and sometimes
absurd changes In familiar hymns. Watts
wrete :
" Sweet fields beynnd the swelling flood
btand drussed in living green."
And as Stcnnet came after htm, Stennet
must boBuppesodto have plagiarized when
he wrete :
"Sweet fields arrayed In lltlng gtcen
And rivers of delight."
The original el -Mrs. Phivbe II. Ilrewn's
"Ilovetestealawhllo away," was entitled
"An apology for my twilight rambles, ad
dressed te a lady" he had criticised her
apparent neglect of her family. It began
with this stauza :
"Yes when the toilsome day Is gene,
Atnlght with banners gray,
.steal silently the glade along,
In twilight's selt array."
Anether of the emitted veries or her hymn
reads:
" I love te meditate en death,
When will its summons come.
With gentle power te steal my breath,
And waft an exile home."
Cowper's "There Is a I'euntain tilled with
bleed" Is nearly nlways cut down te live
stanza", though seven were written In the
original. These are the ether twe:
"Lord 1 belleve thou bnt prepared.
Unworthy though I be.
Fer me a bioed bought free reward,
A golden harp for ine
"Tls strung nnd tuned for endless years,
ahu lefineu uy jteweruivinu.
Te sound In Ued, t tic 1 uther's esrs,
Ne ether mine but Tnlne "
Jeseph Giigg, a ten-year old boy v he In
later years wrote the hymn "Hebeid n
Stranger nt the Doer" was the author or
"Jesns, nnd shall it ever be?
A mortal man ashamed of lhee '
Ashamed of Thee, whom angels pra!c.
Whose glory shines through endless days"
But the hymn tlnkerers delilierately
changed the last two lines te what Or. liveli
er calls this mi9crable bathes :
"Scorned be the thought by rich nnd peer.
Oh ! may 1 scorn It meru and mere "
Rev. Kdmund Jenes wrete "ceme A umble
sinner In whose breast; but the tlnkerers
bavechauged it te the ' trembling sinner;"
the first line or the last stanza, "1 rannef
perish ir I go," Is an alteration Irem " I can
iiif perish ir I go."
Very lew or the hymnals which Include
Rev. Dr. Muhlenberg's famous 1 would

verses of It :
That heavenly tnusle I hark sweet In theiilr,
The notes et the harpers, hew clear ringing

Te adore htm, bu near him, enwrapt Kith his
love.
I but wait for the summons, I list for the word
Allelujab, amen, evermore with the Lord"
Nearly every line et " Reck of Ages" has
tieen altered. In the Presbyterian hymnal
we have tliree lines :
"Frem thv riven slde which flowed.
Be of sin the double cure
Clcansa ma irem Its guilt and power."
A Methodist version el these same verses,
runs thus :
" Frem thy wounded slde which flowed,

There nre various ether -versions. The

lines ; but iu another part the text Is
changed. But Tnplady changed VI atts'
