Jeawsen as a Naturalist.
Many pages of Themas Jeffersen's "Notes
en Virginia" are devoted te the discussion of
Uuffen's statements, first, that the animals
common (e both continents are smaller, in
tbe new world; second, that these which are
peculiar te the new are en a smaller scale ;
third, that these which have been demon
strated in both have degeneratedln America,
and, leurtb, that en the whele America ex
hibits rewer species. He successfully over
throws the specious and superficial argu
ments of the eloquent French naturalist,
who, it must be remembered, was at this
time considered tbe highest authority living
in sucii matters.
"Net content with this" continued Mr.
Goede, "when mlnlster plenipotentiary te
Europe a few rears later, he forced llnlTen
himself te admit bis error. The circumstances
shall be related in the words or Daniel
Webster, who was very fend or relating this
anecdete: "It was a dispute In relation te
the moose, and In one or the circles of the
beauzsprit a in Paris, Mr. Jeffersen fought
rer some characteristics in the formation of the
animal which Butten stoutly denied. Where Where
npen Mr. Jeflersen wrote from l'Arls te
General Jehn Sullivan, then rcsldlug In
Durham, N. II., te procure and pend him
the whole frame of n moose. The General
was no little astonished at a request he
deemed se extraordinary, but well acquaint
ed with Mr. Jeffersen, he knew he must have
sufficient reason for It ; se he made n hunting
party of his neighbors, and took the field.
They Jcaptnred a moose of unusual projec
tions, Btutled it te tbe bone, and sent the
skeleton te Mr. Jeffersen, nt fa cost of .C60
sterling. On its arrival Mr.fJefforsen Invited
Butten and seme ether savants te a supper
at his house and exhibited bis dear-beuubt
specimen. Iluflbn Immediately acknowl
edged his error. "I should have consulted
you, monsieur," he said, "before publishing
my book en natural history, and then 1
should have been sure of my facts.','
Ue Wrete a Check Illht Off.
Frem tbe Detroit Free Press.
Tbe ether day a farmer-looking tunu en
tered a Uristveld street bank with a check
which he handed te the paying-teller, aud
which was at once retnrned te him with the
remark :
"Ne money here."
"What!" Areyoueutor meuey?" asked
the caller.
"Ob, no. I mean that tbe man whose
name is signed there has no money en de
posit here."
"Is that se? Why, he's ene el the nicest
men I ever met."
"Tbat may be, but his check Isn't worth
anything here."
"Isn't, eh? Why, he bearded with me n
whole month, and we think everything et
him. Maybe he's get money here and it's
mislaid somewhere."
"The check is worthless, sir. lie never
had a dollar en deposit here."
"2ever ma, en? i ticn't see hew it comes
bout. When I asked him for his beard
money he wrote this check nut as quick as
wink. Yeu couldn't pay it and trust him
for the money, eh T"
The teller looked at him in a sorrowful
way for a moment, and tbe man centinued:
' You'd better de tbat way. 1 hale te hurt
his reellugs, you knew I"
"Say, tbat check is worthless, and 1 don't
want you te bother me I" exclaimed the
teller.
"Yeu don't, ch? Well, I won't; tint I
think It's a mean sort of a trick en your part.
When a man gees aud writes a check right
ofTllkehe did it ought te be paid. When I

Twe Tears Older Than Ills father.
"T. D." writes as fellows te tbe odlter el
the Auburn Advertiser : "In all the trans

viz., the version or King James, and the
Oxford and American Bible Society editions
or the same, in the Douay versions or the
Reman Catholic church, as well as In the
new versions or the English aud American
divines, occurs the common oversight or
blunder in stating in tbe Second Chronicles
that King Abazlah was forty and two years
old ou bis accession te the throneof Judea
atthe death of his father, who died at the
age of 40, thus making King Abnziah two
years elder than bis father. See Second
Chreulcles, xxl., 0, and xxIL, 1. See also
Second KIijrs viil., G, where his age Is cor
rectly stated. It Is certainly a literary cu
riosity that with all tbe comparison, colla
tion, t.tuily and controversy about readings
and meanings or tbe text, greater In regard
te the Illble than in regard te any ether
book, all Its learned scholars, commentators
and controversialists should have in common
overlooked an absurd blunder such as tbl.
Although in the original manuscript, and a
manifest blunder, It should net have been
allowed te pass without correction, It being
